I am already programming a game engine for someone but I am doing it for free, in return he is referencing me and might hire me when he sets up his company.

What type of game is it?

STM 06-05-2011 06:38 AM

A 3D third person puzzle game. But this thread isn't about it so shh! ;)

Sounds cool. The only games I've made are just flash games, still fun to make and play though. :D

STM 06-05-2011 06:51 AM

Well the guy who has made all the environments and characters is an amazing designer! I just hope my work does the game justice.

Do the environments he makes look better than this:

Or not?
Consider the fact that that is in the Doom engine...

This isn't really to do with the topic Oddman.

but yes, I'd say they are better

Well it's to do with your work and this is a thread about work so I'd say it's fairly on topic.

I would do C++ myself but I haven't been up the library lately (I usually read these books to learn this stuff to get the basics). Plus I'm still doing flash.

Disgruntled Intern 06-05-2011 08:45 AM

I do freelance design work for bands, sell paintings and toys occasionally. Taking a hiatus from medical work as I'm in school to further my medical career and I just don't want my life to be so MEDICAL.

Also moonlight as a doorman/bouncer for one of our local venues. Boring. Dorian is currently the primary bread winner.

Does anyone know if Tesco's will take people who can only work 2 days a week? I'm just wondering what my chances will be.

Probably just weekends.

STM 06-05-2011 09:40 AM

The annoying thing is on my CV I can only put what I expect to finish school with, it's seems funny to put 'I expect to leave secondary school with 8 GCSE's.'

JennyGenesis 06-05-2011 09:48 AM

I handed a form in a week ago to Tescos for a full time job. I hope to get a reply from them. It's where I would really love to work because I know quite a few people there and its only a 5 minute walk from my house. I'd also love that job at the bar but that involves a bus ride to get there.

Who knows. I just hope I land myself a job before I officially finish college on the 24th June.

Wil 06-05-2011 10:09 AM

In my experience, applying to Tesco means never hearing from them. Good luck, though!

STM 06-05-2011 10:59 AM

Good thing is I live only a minutes walk from the Tesco's being built down my road, it would be the easiest job to reach in the world.

A lot of people have been complaining about Tesco building everywhere, Tescopoly they call it.

STM 06-05-2011 11:43 AM

Yeh we did too but they just let the plot go without repair for seven years, the place became a haunt for drug addicts and the whole place looked nasty because of it, the shops locally will suffer but I need the cash so if it's up then I might as well apply.

Bugger! :(

Well hopefully I can get this job at a bar. I saw it advertised at the job center so that should mean a higher chance of me getting in. I shall be stopping at the bar tuesday to hand in my application form.

I work as a web developer at a small company in Sydney. It has its ups and down, but generally I enjoy the work I do :)

I've also freelanced here and there for the past four or five years.

Alcar...

JennyGenesis 06-06-2011 06:01 AM

Is that coding? Or is it actually creating the websites so they look good. I'm not sure what the difference is. Web developing is something I hate :p

Alcar 06-06-2011 07:10 AM

Both front-end and back-end development. Can't create a design in Photoshop for shit, but I can take a design and develop the front-end with it. Back-end tends to be less flashy and more functional (duh).

Any particular reason you hate it? I find it quite interesting, the space is always moving. With greater HTML5 and CSS3 adoption, as well as better JavaScript engines having become more common-place in the past two to three years, I've been spending more and more time on my front-end development. Not to say I don't keep up with the back-end, PHP5.3 was sweet, and PHP5.4 has some more goodies coming that I've been dying for :D

Unfortunately I only get to use the latest technology when I freelance - due to the constraints and viability of upgrading commercial applications. Never the less.

At the moment I'm trying to decide whether to learn Python, or Java. So difficult!

I ply a meager trade in the disease-ridden dank depths of the Jungles of Lustria, ferrying would-be adventurers to their demise upon my worn riverboat.

Oh, give Warhammer a rest for a while.

You have the job I want. Though you're probably going to tell me that I must have quite low aspirations or something.

I currently work in intense 1½ bursts, then longer periods of less intense work inbetween. They're called exams. Probably going to get a Saturday job or something when I'm done.

Why bother with war cries? Death is inevitable so one should be silent in waiting for it! Papa Nurgle!

Plague! Ravage! Rot and Death!

moxco 06-07-2011 03:20 AM

I like turtles.

Also I am unemployed; getting a job would mean losing my valuable procrastination time.

STM 06-07-2011 03:35 AM

Procrastination = masturbation though right?

JennyGenesis 06-07-2011 06:49 AM

No. It means when you purposely put a delay something. Example. If I was procrastinating my homework it means that I am just putting it off till the last minute.

Just had a letter through the door from Tesco
Turned down, I seem to get turned down for every job

Havoc 06-07-2011 09:24 AM

Not surprising when you apply for a job everyone and their dog can do. Not to say that's your fault, but that's the downside of early starter jobs.

I seemed to have missed a topic switch somewhere. How'd we get here?

JennyGenesis 06-07-2011 01:03 PM

It wasn't a topic. It was one of my blog posts.

@STM - You're doing a good thing with the bee-keeping. It's unfortunate that profit can't really be made from it unless your honey really is that spectacular - One of my friend's families runs a self-sufficient small-holding to sustain themselves by living off the land. They also do bee-keeping on a moderate scale and sell off the excess honey, building and maintaining their own hives. However, it's a fuckton of work, and they told me that the only thing that makes it worth doing for them is because they're doing it primarily for themselves.

As for me, I work one or two days a week doing cash-in-hand gardening or handyman jobs for friends alongside my Uni work (when I'm not procrastinating, lol). The trouble with my skill-set is that I seem to be able to do almost anything, just not to a professional standard, nor do I work very fast - but I'm cheap and get the job done. My friends understand this, and tell me that what I do is better than a job not being done, and they get what they pay for, which is true.

However, as an honest man, I would rather they employed professionals to do a decent job beyond my skill-set even if they would charge 5 times as much. Still, money's gotta come from somewhere so perhaps I shouldn't complain too much. And I don't make much money so I have to live below my means just to make ends meat.
