I now own these games. The gamebox is sitting on my desk, still in its perfect plastic wrapping.

I'm not allowing myself to play it until I've transcribed my Lorne interview.

Wil 10-18-2011 04:28 AM

Where are the sound files you were going to upload for me?

Nate 10-18-2011 05:27 AM

Well, if you hadn't left your computer idle, you would have received the URLs for them already.

I wanted to have a listen through them first to make sure there wasn't too much personal stuff on them. You'll understand when you hear them.

I say that because of all the ugly and distracting asset stretching and tiling. The art style is as beautiful as ever, and obviously the sheer age of the game shows; that's excusable. But the increased resolution really shows how non-HD the models, textures and UI are. More TLC would have gone a long way.

Belated thought: That's probably actually because it's being rendered for 3d TVs.

Wil 10-18-2011 06:56 AM

I don't follow the connection.

Nate 10-18-2011 02:51 PM

The extra processing needed to render everything twice means that image quality has to be sacrificed in order to maintain the frames per second rate. It's been a common complaint to pretty much every 3d game.

Mac Sirloin 10-18-2011 04:08 PM

A friend of mine has apparently beaten Ico in under 2 hours on the rerelease.

He's had my copy of portal 2 since May though and hasn't beaten that

Phylum 10-19-2011 01:56 AM

Your friend needs to get his shit together.

EDIT: And that was before I'd processed that it was your copy of Portal 2. Tell him you want it back in 3 weeks because you want to play the DLC or something. A time limit does wonders to efficiency.

Wil 10-19-2011 02:24 AM

We weren't looking at it in 3D at the time. Plain old 2D.

I think the implication is that a game with 3D support will always be rendering twice under the hood, so that if you switch between having 3D enabled and disabled the change will be seamless.

Whether or not that’s true is beyond my technical knowledge.

Wil 10-19-2011 05:06 AM

It would also be daft. It's permissible to have a seam when switching between display modes.

Crashpunk 10-19-2011 12:07 PM

Jak and Daxter have been rumoured to get a HD Collection.

StrangerEastwood 10-19-2011 08:59 PM

I would kill for a J&D collection...Hell, I want Jak IV! Screw Uncharted!...Sorry Nate, heat of the moment.(And I meant Nathan Drake, not you Nate, lol)

Dynamithix 10-19-2011 09:29 PM

Didn't they make a Jak 4? Or was that Lost Frontier game a spin-off of some sort?

Those mother fuckers need to make a R&C Collection, Up Your Arsenal is one of the best games I have ever played.

Also, Devil May Cry is going to get an HD collection.

StrangerEastwood 10-19-2011 10:30 PM

yeah, lost frontier's a spin off by high voltage games. The R&C size matters guys. Its alright...camera's shitty.

I don't think that that is true, but they might not have had the budget/time to create (and/or store on the disk) both medium- and high-res textures and models. Given that 3d was a goal for them, they might have comprimised by only putting only the medium quality versions.

Crashpunk 10-20-2011 08:30 AM

I would kill for the original Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon HD Collections.

Such a shame the rights have been bought by another company...

Wil 10-20-2011 08:37 AM

I can't see Crash Bandicoot HD remasters being given much love. That series has been pimped and sold and beaten and bashed beyond all recognition. Spyro I wouldn't know about, but judging by the current direction of the series… =/

StrangerEastwood 10-20-2011 11:46 AM

at least crash and spyro are on psn. And they were always owned by universal-naughty dog and insomniac had to leave them behind...*sniffle*

Manco 10-20-2011 03:18 PM

I would love to see classic Crash and Spyro remasters, but at the same time part of me knows they wouldn’t be the same.

Also, I’m kind of getting sick of all the HD remasters. Fuck’s sake, I want to see new games, not live in the past.

Remasters of the original games will get so much love. The old fans of the series would just be all over them (Including me). Its true that Crash and Spyro have been slaughtered by other companies but the remasters would be nothing like those dreadful games.

I don't mind a couple of HD remakes but I agree completly. New games damn it!

StrangerEastwood 10-20-2011 04:09 PM

Ugh...*goes play Crash Warped*...I love you, you goofy ass marsupial...

Dynamithix 10-20-2011 09:15 PM

Who? Isn't Crash a coyote?

Wings of Fire 10-20-2011 09:17 PM

He's a bandicoot...

StrangerEastwood 10-20-2011 09:18 PM

Crash is a bandicoot. Only coyote I know is Wile E.
edit: Damn, beat me to it. lol

Dynamithix 10-20-2011 09:31 PM

I didn't even know that bandicoot is a real animal.

StrangerEastwood 10-20-2011 09:39 PM

Yup, here's one.

Remasters of the original games will get so much love.

I meant from the developers, not from the gaming community. Obviously the gaming community loves the early Crash games.

Manco 10-21-2011 03:52 AM

I think even if you got a developer who cared about those games to put love into a remake, I just don’t feel it’s worth it. Crash and Spyro were both based around very cartoony art styles, and I don’t think those would benefit hugely from an extra dose of polygons.

HD remakes are better-suited to games with detailed and realistic art styles.

Stealing all your apples and smashing your crates.

Wil 10-21-2011 04:00 AM

They're wumpa fruit, damn it!

StrangerEastwood 10-21-2011 11:11 AM

I was about to say that, lol. And your batteries for their sister's laptop. And wtf happened to Crash's girl? She just went....poof.

Crashpunk 10-22-2011 03:46 AM

You mean Tawna from the first game. She ran off with Pinstripe.

Manco 10-22-2011 05:37 AM

She was removed and replaced with Coco because she was felt to be not kid-friendly. She eventually reappeared in a DS spin-off game.

StrangerEastwood 10-22-2011 06:27 AM

I just like to pretend everything past Crash Warped didnt happen. xP

Dynamithix 10-22-2011 06:30 AM

That Crash game for DS was awful. My friend has it.

Manco 10-22-2011 06:37 AM

I’d contend that everything past CTR was mediocre or awful.

Nate 10-22-2011 06:48 AM

Hay, everyone! Remember when we had a thread about Ico and SotC? It used to be such a nice thread.

If there's a mod who can understand any of what's been posted in the last few days, perhaps s/he can sort out what posts should be moved to a new thread. Otherwise, next offtopic posting gets an infraction. Kapish?

StrangerEastwood 10-22-2011 06:52 AM

And on that note I wanted to know, did they really completely screw the 60 fps out of these? Originally that's why I wanted these updates...The concept of SotC playing at a full 60 fps had me so excited. the framerate was the only issue in the original.
