Alcar...

Is that with the emphasis on the 'ver'?

Alcar 02-09-2010 09:23 PM

Con-trov-es-see

The es as in especially.

As opposed to how most Australians pronounce it:

Con-tra-ver-see

I don't know how to navigate the International Phonetic Alphabet. If I could, I'd have conveyed the pronunciation in it.

Alcar...

enchilado 02-09-2010 11:06 PM

I always pronounced it Con-trov-es-see.

That's how I pronounce it. Which is why I asked whether you meant the emphasis on the 'ver'; because I assumed you preferred the opposite of whatever I do.

Maybe you should stop making assumptions about the Australian accent based on your limited Sydney life experience.

Bullet Magnet 02-10-2010 08:10 AM

In this damn global culture I can't hold down any one pronunciation for a great many words.

OANST 02-10-2010 08:50 AM

Capybara

MA 02-10-2010 09:06 AM

Dryadri 02-10-2010 09:14 AM

Edit: Also wafer, ouija, wallop, bollocks and cheerios.

It also works quite well with "verdict."

I object to you adding three extra syllables at the end of a perfectly respectable word in a shallow attempt to make it longer than 'floccinaucinihilipilification'.

Actually I was originally just going to post antidisestablishmentarianism, but Wikipedia told me about the -ologist. As for floccinaucinihilipilification, this is a 'words we like the sound of' thread, not a Longest Word contest.

Ouch.

I've never heard controversy pronounced in the manner it was in the United Kingdom. Thus upon hearing it for the first time used by a news anchor for the BBC, I instantly fell in love with it.

Nate 02-10-2010 03:31 PM

Why don't you come down here and I'll pronounce words any way you like?

Alcar 02-10-2010 03:38 PM

June baby. June.

I quite prefer disaccharide. More of a ring to it.

I agree. Especially when I'm around the sort of Americans* who have never heard of the word.

*It may be a California thing. I don't know.

Phantasmagoria and phasm both refer to ghost related stuff.
Note: phantasmagoria was also the name of an extremely graphic horror game from the mid 90's.

Alf Shall Rise 02-21-2010 01:51 PM

I always found circulate to be an awesome word, I find it fun to say.

Circulate.

Wings of Fire 02-21-2010 01:52 PM

Sever is an alright word.

I move that we only allow words in that are awesome when not symbolically attached to their concepts.
