But yeah, the UK is pretty good at throwing idiotic research into the media, because I hardly ever hear about decent research coming from that place. Same with just about any other country because any decent research isn't simple enough for the general public to understand.

Then why do you make out as if the UK doesn't perform real research? I think you're just jealous of people from a real country that didn't have to be reclaimed from the sea.

Havoc 12-21-2009 08:51 AM

Normal people would see reclaiming land from the sea an extraordinary thing to do. And not only that, we took that reclaimed land and turned it into the richest and most important patch of land in Europe. No wait, the world. Not only do we have Europe's biggest harbor. We also have the International Court of Justice. So my country can SUE your country for putting bullshit research in the tabloids!

And I didn't say the UK doesn't perform real research. I said that lately all that's come out of the UK is bullshit research.

Biggest problem with online international banking is the whole deal with Western Union. It's easy to use, so alot of frauds tend to use it. Hell, a friend of mine got scammed out of 5000 euros that was meant for rent because of an internship in Paris.

Olly, when you say you don't trust online-banking, do you mean online banking in general? Or just the iffy ones? For example, almost every bank here in The Netherlands has it's own online-banking service. It's secure, easy, and fast. Hell, even PayPal communicates with them.

I do most of my banking online, wether it is just transferring money to people I buy stuff from for my car, using PayPal, or just paying speed tickets.

Just my €0.02 (My €0.02 beats your $ 0.02 :P) though.

Oh yes. I lurk.

I think Olly meant she felt iffy about using online banking because she doesn't trust her internet connection. That's fair enough; I never do internet banking or Paypal whilst at uni. Whilst the ITS department are generally pretty good and there's a strong chance their system is even safer than the one I have at home, I'm just a bit hesitant at using a network that I didn't build myself and for which I don't know every step of the route.

Shit, I can't have a credit card because I'm under age! XD I could use my parents' credit card but they don't allow me to do it... I'll wait!

That's why you get a debit card; it acts like a credit card in that it goes through the Visa or Mastercard systems, but takes the money straight out of your bank account

Havoc 12-21-2009 04:36 PM

So how do you guys log into your online banking then? If it's done by a simple username and password I can understand why you'd be reluctant to use it. I would be too.

For my bank, I need to enter my account number and pas number. Then I have to put my debit card in a small gadget I got from the bank, after which I have to enter my PIN number. The gadget then gives me a code, which I have to enter into the site as well. Then I get logged in and I can go about my business until I want to send all the transactions I've drafted together.

When I want to send my transactions to be processed, I need to enter a code from the site into the device, which gives me another code which I need to enter into the site. Then it sends the orders.

The device is basically a calculator that applies some long string of math onto the given numbers and stuff, you get the idea. And your session get's removed after being inactive for 10 minutes. It's very high level security which, I think, can't be cracked unless someone has your PIN number.

Like Opril, I have a debit card. It gives me all the benefits of any other type of Mastercard, in that I can use it anywhere in the world, but just withdraws directly from my bank account rather than through credit.

Glad we can agree on something.
