Wow, you do live uncomfortably close to me. I didn't think there was any other Staffordshirians on this forum.

EDIT: OH FUCK 2500 POSTS WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN

MA 10-05-2009 09:01 AM

i take it you heard on the news about Mick Eccles being murdered by those two youths then?

that happened at the bottom of my street, and even more worryingly, i had a confrontation with the younger lad about a week before outside the shops.

OANST 10-05-2009 09:32 AM

I'm spending about an hour to an hour and a half a night teaching Abbey to read. All I have to say is this: Fuck you, English language. Fuck you.

Don't mention that. Things like that really make me angry. I tend to get sent into fits of rage and frustration, and I'll be wound up for about half an hour.

But that is quite worrying. It's very strange when things like that happen near where you live, isn't it?

MA 10-05-2009 09:37 AM

tell me about it. the bloke even used to drink in my local, but i never spoke to him. poor chap.

OddjobAbe 10-05-2009 09:41 AM

I hope those cretinous little irks get what they deserve.

Why don't you move to France, then?

Wil 10-06-2009 01:48 AM

Teach her Lojban instead.

I hate it when people pronounce "envelope" "onvolope". I bet there's a fair few of you who do that here. I also hate "mum". I was always brought up to say "mam".
I'd always say "garridge", and as for "mall", I'd say "supermarket".

Garridge? Never heard of it before. I say Garardge.

But....that's where the French live.

It isn't easy to explain why the rules constantly change when trying to teach her the written language. She's doing really well, though.

I always found that a bit pretentious. There's something about that "ahj" prenuncation that bothers me.

Wil 10-06-2009 07:10 AM

How do you pronounce mirage and sabotage? Negrep to anyone who mentions anything remotely Star Trek related. Especially you, Shit Nathan.

OANST 10-06-2009 07:37 AM

Mir-ahj and sab-i-tahj.

You win, Russians. A letter for every sound, and there's no such thing as 'w' or 'h'.

AlexFili 10-06-2009 07:56 AM

I pronounce Sabotage in the same way as the Beastie Boys (and I say Mirage in the same way).

Wil 10-06-2009 08:41 AM

I was aiming my question at Oj to make a point, but whatevs. Free-for-all.

I had always wondered why we did those pointless spelling tests and had to read out loud in class.

Is there any way she can get any foreign language education at the time being?

Sometimes she watches Dora.

Mirardge and sabotarge. I have never pronounced anything as "ahj" apart from when I've mocked a middle-class accent. It may sound silly to you, but it is just how I've been brought up to talk.

OANST 10-06-2009 09:04 AM

So you mock the proper pronunciation? That doesn't sound like you.

OddjobAbe 10-06-2009 09:06 AM

I don't so much mock the pronunciation, more the stereotypical portrayal of a middle/upper class person.

OANST 10-06-2009 09:06 AM

Rape/brutal rape.

Bear in mind learning your first language is more about learning the actual concept and rules of universal language more than it is about what language you learn.

Though apparently being bilingual from before the critical period is always good.

Get out of here with your philosophy or I'll go Solipsistic on you!

It is better to begin teaching them from when they're little. 1) I've often heard they learn faster. 2) It's better early than when they're in high school stressed enough as it is and could give less than a damn. Not that I'm recommending anything about it to you, OANST.

Wings of Fire 10-06-2009 09:18 AM

That was psychology, and you're completely right on both points.
