That usually goes with age. One day you end up realising that although you will never change from the default Windows XP installation that you've grown so accustomed to (until it becomes obsolete circa Win7's standardisation), you will slowly start to admire the Mac's level of reliability and painlessness (and of course actual presence of design and thought into the ui).

Then, following on with your semi-nonconformist lifestyle, you will discover Linux, and proceed to become a total fucking douche.

That's not my experience with Macs. For me Macs are annoying. Their keyboard is anoying, their mouse is annoying, the layout of the OS is annoying (colored dots? god forbid we put some discription on there for people who haven't been using this OS for years?) and the way it does things is annoying. Then again, I'm a Windows guy and Windows is probably equally annoying to a long time Mac user.

One thing I don't understand however. You pay what, $1500,- these days, for an iMac? Why would you pay that much for an iMac if the performance of a PC with a similar pricetag is at least double (if not tripple) that of an iMac? I've always wondered this since I'm kind of into video editing and everyone at my school always says Macs are better for editing, which makes no sense to me as they have shit performance.

Do you understand the concept of apostrophes?

I do and thank you for pointing it out.

Indeed, that was a fanboy rant. I'm positive you haven't looked into any other OSs and as such just aren't open to change.

You pay $1500~ for reliability, and in some cases familiarity. I used to be all anti-Mac but really that's because all I ever used was Windows. If you ever get into a position whereupon you are forced to use a Mac for an extended period of time, your Mac homophobia will disintergrate.

lol, lets just put it this way. At my college. All the computers are Dell. Except in the Film section. Mactown. And it's one of the best film schools in the country. Believe me, there's a reason people choose macs for these kinds of things. Final Cut is a Behemoth of video editing :D
Though I still like windows programs. sony Vegas was fun to use, if the PC i had wasn't crap :P
I'm just saying with what I've worked with on PC's and Macs. The latter definitely got me impressed.
As for mice, if you don't like the mighty mouse, which has a nice 2 button functionality already, you can just use any 2 button mouse. I personally use my wacom mouse most of the time. Works like a charm :D
and Mac has gotten cheaper, with the imacs starting at $1200, not $1500 :P but still, it is pretty pricey with specs that could be beat by a PC for probably lower.

But when it comes to programs that come on mac out of the box. Can't be beat :D

(semi Fanboi counter point)

and P.S. The colored dots do have descriptions when you mouse goes by them. I guess if you really couldn't tell what red could mean, or if you're color blind, that can be an issue.

Leto 07-21-2009 12:41 AM

vegas is shit and final cut is soso. really all I've ever used is after effects.

Mac homophobia

That should really be 'heterophobia', seeing as the prefix 'homo-' refers to sameness and 'hetero-' refers to that which is different. [/anal Nate]

Given Pilot's minor adjustment, I most certainly would.

Speaking of Linux-using-douches, here's my desktop:

ohay sup. I approve of both your Linux installation and Sonata Arctica.

Basically you're my favourite person of the thread.

Nate 07-21-2009 04:05 AM

I can see the Ubuntu logo on the bottom left, but what is the desktop environment?

I would show my Ubuntu desktop, but it's still the default image. For some reason I've always been fond of the default ones.

My Ubuntu-Netbook-Remix desktop on my Eee - which you can only really see when it's initialising and shutting down because UNR doesn't really have a desktop - is attached. Though I must admit that this is the original; the one actually displayed on the Eee has been shrunken and cropped to 800×480.

Crashpunk 07-21-2009 07:43 AM

I did have to work with Macs this year and will have to work with them even more next year. I have experience with them but I simply like a PC better because you can stuff so much more power into it than a Mac will ever have, which is simply the most important part in video editing (rendering a video will in turn render your entire platform useless since it uses every single bit of CPU).

On my school though, I have to choose between a network model HP computer (one of those things schools order in bulk and which are slow as fuck) and a set of the latest iMacs. Obviouslly I'll edit my videos on the iMac, thank you very much. But if it were to go between an iMac and my own custom built computer, my Windows machine would win on every front.

Going a bit off topic here, maybe split this topic into a Mac vs PC debate? :)

That's really only good for special effects. Not so much as a stand alone non linear editor.

I have Final Cut and After Effects and could've gotten premiere, but didn't need it :P

I can see the Ubuntu logo on the bottom left, but what is the desktop environment?

It's a bit of a combination, using the Compiz window manager (though you can't really tell that from a desktop screen), the Avant Window Navigator (which creates the bar down the bottom), and then I just have a screenlets application which gives you a bunch of widgets to throw around (e.g. the ubuntu logo which is actually access to the menus, the calendar etc). The top panel is just the normal one.

It's surprising how many people I can confuse with this desktop background, I didn't think their logo was that hard to read. Perhaps that's just because I heard their name before I saw the logo though. Regardless of readability it does make a very good wallpaper though :D

SpAM_CAN 07-25-2009 02:39 PM

I have two desktops, one for OS X and one for Windows XP.

Here's my XP one, can't be bothered to reboot now.

Leto 07-26-2009 12:33 AM

THANK FUCKING CHRIST.

Objectdock (along with Launchy) is an essential piece of software where my Windows installations are concerned (though I don't much care for the glass theme).

YOU are now my favourite person of the thread. Good job little mang

joshkrz 07-26-2009 12:54 PM

Little addons like what spam_can has got are great, but when it comes to speed, there buggers, expecially that glass effect for XP, if thats Windowsblinds then you must be wasting so much performance just for that effect (well even if its different from windows blinds), it's not worth it really. You can get a Vista theme for XP if you really want it, no transparency but it dosen't slow the fuck out of our PC.

Thats my desktop, not that you can see it or anything. Every time my desktop gets full, I select everything, dump it in a folder, and put it in my Documents drive. I have about 4 / 5 folders in there full of crap :\

Laser 07-26-2009 01:34 PM

You just like looking at Lara Croft's boobage don't you?

joshkrz 07-26-2009 01:41 PM

Yerh, too bad there's half a ton of icons in the way :(

OddjobAbe 07-26-2009 01:43 PM

Idea: better organisation of files. Look at my desktop. Give or take a few recent bits, it's all organised. And into sub-categories and sub-sub-categories. Sometimes even sub-sub-sub-categories. Keeps the desktop neat. It's best just to keep frequently used programs and "mother" folders on the desktop.

I used to be like that, but I have 8 hard drives and their basicaly nearly all full, so I get impatient and the desktop is the easiest place to get to. One day I will have to sort every thing out, it will take longer than a day though.

OddjobAbe 07-26-2009 02:02 PM

Eight hard drives? Nearly all full? Fucking Hell, how many programs do you have?
I bet 99% is porno.

Is your desktop really and actually some kind of temporal vortex for thinkly worn and used-up cartewn characters, as you seem to imply by the word you've coined to describe it, 'Tempory?' Who is that anyway-- PEEK-AT-CHU?

I do like it though. :D
