Are you saying that even hinting at the possibility of homosexual tendencies makes you a bad person? The ice, she be cracking.

Seventh-Day Advent Hoppists; base their beliefs on a mistranslation of the Bible that states that states "Faith, hop, and charity, and the greatest of these is hop".

I wasn't jumping to conclusions, I was just hopping that OANST hadn't completely lured you to the dark side.

Or do I mean the brown side?

Except that if humanity didn't have religion, it would instead have something else to fight about.

I for one have no problem with religious people killing off other religious people. However after 9/11 that entire funny situation expanded to the west and now the normal people are being killed too, so now it has become my problem as well.

I'm sure we'd find something to fight over, WWI and II hardly had any religious background (at least I don't think Hitler wanted the Jews dead because of something God said, unless I missed that in history class). The war in the middle east has no religious purpose whatsoever and WWIII (It'll happen, just wait) is more likely to be about resources (water/oil).

Humans have a killing instinct, it's just what we do. However it would make me feel a whole lot better if a war is fought over something real. Be it land, resources or money. If I have to serve in the next World War because Germany decided to fuck the world over the third and final time, and I get shot in my ass, at least I won't have to lay on my stomach for the next 3 months because some towlhead didn't agree with what someone said about his night night story. At least I'd get to lay in that hospital, having been shot by someone who actually tried to accomplish something real (and Germans have proven time and time again they can accomplish those goals quite effectively, which is a lot better then shooting my ass for 70 virgins).

So yeah, maybe we would find something else to fight about. But at least that fight would mean something. What goes on in places like the Gaza Strip and whatnot doesn't mean jack shit. It's a waste of perfectly good bullets and medical equipment.

Due to the unholy time of 2:22AM, Havoc does not take any responsibility for the above post in terms of grammar or hard-to-readability. Tha- Fuck you.

So many things wrong with this, least of all the racist insult.

Havoc, do you honestly think that wars are fought for religion? Wars are fought for money and power and religion oft gets the blame as it is the easiest way of justifying these intentions to the great unwashed.

Also, the Middle East conflict has always been the West's problem, ever since we planted the seeds of HMS FUBAR there back in the fourties, the fifties, the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. You can call 9/11 some well overdue backlash, horrible, disgusting and dreadful yes, but not at all unexpected given Newton's Laws.

Think the crusades. You could say those were fought over land, but religion drove it as well. I'm no authority on the crusades though, so I could be wrong.

As for the middle east, sure that's the west's fault. We created the mess in the Gaza strip and we created the mess in Afghanistan and Iraq. I know my history, I know the level of involvement the west has in those places. However the reason people are fighting in Gaza right now is because of religious reasons. Because one side read in some book that the land of the other side actually belongs to them so they want to take it back. The other side meanwhile was just getting comfy where they were and don't want to go away without a fight. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that the real source of the conflict over there, many many years ago, was based on some religious people wanting a piece of land back that a dusty book claims is theirs.

Anony: You had respect for me?

Kastere: Don't misquote me. I didn't say Jews did WTC, I never even connected the two.

Nate 04-04-2009 05:46 AM

Actually, that's a perfect example of what I mean, Havoc.

The Israel/Palestinian issue has only ever been about one thing: Land. Both sides think they have exclusive right to live in the same patch of soil [/oversimplification]. That it has become couched in relgious terms (suicide bombers, 70 virgins, holy land, etc) is a later addition; it all started with the land.

Yes but at least one of those sides think they have exclusive rights because their holy book tells them so. Which is exactly my point.

OANST 04-04-2009 07:08 AM

Did you guys know that King David was a traitorous, murdering asshole?

Yes, I changed the subject.

He was a big boy.

I am officially going on strike against the further usage of the phrase "big boy" on these forums.

I'm taking a stand for once. Now stop saying it.

OANST 04-04-2009 12:29 PM

He was an Elias Brother.

Some ultraorthodox jews, yes. But Islam doesn't state that they own the land; just that Jerusalem is a holy city for them. Similarly, mainstream Jews acknowledge that the bible is no proof that they own the land.

Ultimately it goes down to historical ownership.

I love ginger ale. But I hate Canada Dry, I'm a Vernors man.

I've drank offensive quantities of Canada Dry in single sittings.
I have a fried with a four year old Vernor can sitting beside his computer, unopened.

Why hasn't he opened it, likes the looks better than the taste?

Although I'm still on my forum boycott against the usage of the term 'big boy,' I'm also going to start boycotting Canada Dry. Those of you bandwagon-types, choose your picket sign! I have:

Canada Damp Stinks!
and
Down with Canada Moist!

EDIT

I've been a bad wittle boy lately by exacorbating the level to which threads have become derailed. This thread is about the pope, and we've gotten sidetracked on the loosely-related and deceptively similar subject of Canada Dry™ Brand Ginger Ale.

Now, to get this thread back on track.....

Fosters & Carling are both rather nice. Carlsberg's not so good.

As for bitters, I loathe John Smith's. Utterly foul.

Pilot 04-06-2009 08:39 AM

Oh, Fosters..... I was thinking of the Australian beer, I didn't know there was a Foster's ginger ale. :p

AlexFili 04-06-2009 08:44 AM

Is it just me, or do all wines and champagnes taste awful?

OANST 04-06-2009 08:58 AM

No. I think that's universally accepted. That's why they are really only given to prisoners who have committed the most heinous of crimes. Without the prison system, the champagne and wine industry would have collapsed years ago.
