When I first saw this edition I wanted it so badly, but now I'm thinking "What's the pont?" Sure, it would be nice to have and all, but it's not as if there's anything extra apart from a couple of signitures and a fancy cover (I personaly think the limited edition of 1000 looks nicer). I already have the ordinary edition, so this one would just sit in the corner of my room unopened and going to waste.

On the other hand, it's a very good way for the company to make money.

Its intended to be uber-limited and is aimed at the most hardcore of fans and collectors.

...You mean the most wealthy of fans and collectors? :p

Fish 02-20-2009 03:11 PM

Even though I already had a copy of the first Limited Edition (Issue no. 289), I HAD to buy this one too. I'm happy to boast what I hope is a rather impressive Oddworld collection, but it just wouldn't be complete without that new book.

Mine is issue #2. *is delighted* I got it for my birthday today.

Slog Bait 02-20-2009 03:57 PM

Someone bought it for you for your birthday?

Damn, I wish I knew people willing to spend that much money for me.

Well, it took all the monetary contributions from ALL my relatives, and I had to put £90 in myself... but still, it was pretty cool of my mum to agree to it ^-^

The quality is nowhere near that high. It isn't printed on pressed gold, for the love of god. And you would think that the fact that OI still has fans willing to buy things of this nature when they have gone this long sans project, would make them happy to be signing these things free of cost.

Collectors items are supposed to raise in value over time. The manufacturer isn't supposed to anticipate what it will be worth ten years from now and sell it at that price.

The quality isn't that high? I haven't actually seen one (and I won't be seeing one either, since I won't buy one). But I dunno anyway, it's not like we're losing something, the content is all the same.

New Edition of The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants

:

It's an Oddworld

Book world Limited art book re-release of the classic gamers' favourite

In conjunction with the re-issue of 2004's Art of Oddworld Inhabitants, Ballistic Publishing has released 100 collector editions, which include a numbered certificate of authenticity, lovingly hand-signed by its creators Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna.
"Since Sherry and I founded Oddworld back in 1994 we have eagerly anticipated the moment when a densely packed and finely printed Art of Oddworld book would find life," declares Lorne, "and this collection of work reflects the intense artistic effort that has gone into the creation of our heroes."
Offering 256 pages of storyboards, design sketches, fully rendered characters and environments from all four main Oddworld games, the Folio Edition comes in a handcrafted display case, with an attached purple ribbon bookmark, for the princely sum of $290.
If you're too late - or skint - for that version, don't worry, there's also a leather-bound limited edition, and a hard and soft cover available. Get more details here: www.oddworld.com/firsttenyears/index.shtml

...exactly how many editions do we need? And sheesh, that ain't cheap.

It’s not that the quality isn’t high—it is. It’s that once you open the cover and take out the certificate, there’s nothing here that’s new to either the book or any book. The printing quality may be the greatest ever conceived, but it’s like HD TV or a digital camera with a stupid number of megapixels—going beyond what’s worth creating because the human eye just can’t pick up that level of detail. And the cover is very pretty, but not made of gold.

Thanks for the transcript, Zerox.

This thread was while I was away, wasn't it?

I did check it hadn't already been mentioned.

Oh well.

Crashpunk 03-19-2009 12:38 PM

Dose the book have Posters in it?

Wil 03-19-2009 12:52 PM

Not posters you can take out and put on your wall. It has images of the four movie poster designs created for the Abe’s Exoddus movie, as well as some extra ones.

Stuv 03-19-2009 01:39 PM

If, you don't think the quality is worth the price then it just shows you aren't as big a fan as the people who will dish out the cash. I would if I had it. o.o You could always not eat for a month. :D

AlexFili 03-19-2009 11:49 PM

This just goes to show, price and quality don't always match.

Take Wii and Xbox360, compare that to the price of PS3.
How many people have a 360 compared to PS3? I rest my case :p

Getting a PS3 is so stupid, most of the games are on 360 anyway.

Having a limited edition run is a great way of making money. It's up to the consumers to buy it. Naturally all copies will be sold, one way or another.

The extra quality of the limited folio edition probably isn't worth the price except for a handful of digital art fans...

You don't have to hand out cash to ballisitc publishing to show how big a fan your are, that's ridiculous.

You're kidding, right? A person who buys the soft cover edition of the artbook is just as much of a fan as one who'd buy a more expensive copy. Just because the book is made of better material and may look a bit nicer, it still contains the same amount of Oddworld knowledge and artwork.

There are different kinds of fans. There are fans who go to every interview and every autograph signing event, but there are other fans who collect all the merchandise and write fanfics... It's up to the tastes of the individual.

I'm sure when Lorne walks down the red carpet he gets trampled by the huge crowd trying to get his autograph.

So I'm not a fan if I'm not going to run away from home, and steal a couple of grand so I can fly to OWI studios to get a signiture.

Stuv 03-24-2009 01:09 PM

Lol, I was half way joking with my post. Thats why I mentioned not eating to get the book (though I sure some people might o.o). Didn't mean to hurt your fan egos.

Yes, exactly. I'm totaly on board with crime and starvation to support a fan addiction.

Ninjaxe 03-26-2009 08:16 PM

Personally I think it is pushing it. I have the soft back version. I had to go all way the to Causeway Bay back this book. Plus it cost a lot too  Well its been 3 years since got it. It has the same content right. So what is different about this apart from the cover?
