Let's not get racist here, the emos didn't do anything.

Children play nice. Fanfiction is a cool thing to read and write and unless any of you can do it better I suggest you shut up. Now go back on topic...

I must say though, I don't mind some fan fiction. I actually don't really read it. Mehsauce. |

Let me put it this way. If I went on to a Star Wars forum, and all I posted was LOLZ STAR WARZ SUX LULZ!, I would be banned as a troublemaker and troll. And you seem to be eager to simply attack fanfiction rather than actually discuss it.
|
Unfortunately this isn't a fanfiction forum. It's a thread in a much larger forum. And if you only wish to have conversations with those who share your point of view then you aren't likely to learn much in this life. So go dry your eyes and try again.
Oh, and I gave reasons for my dislike of fanfiction. They were far from LOLZ Patrick Vykkerz is a dirty emo-fag and so his opinion doesn't count. Who's argument was that? Oh, yeah. It was yours. |
It's impossible to dislike fanfiction as a whole because there are thousands of writers, some better then others but you can't just say 'I hate fanfiction because it all sucks' because it doesn't. There are some very talented writers out there.

Does that answer your question? Perhaps you should read the thread before jumping to conclusions like "you can't" or "you don't have a good reason". Because I can and I do. |
Well.... I am an amateur writer. I try VERY hard to make sure my writing is original. I don't write fanfics because I personally feel as if its a cheap way to write, using someone elses' creations as a crutch. But I will read Published Fanfiction.

Some of us are getting off topic with this emo bravado.

This topic was harldy gonna thrive much further. At least this corpse is getting pounded enough for a new orafice.

I write stories all the time, right now fanfiction but I also have an entire novel collecting dust somewhere on my harddrive. Point is that both kinds of stories are just as complicated to write. In some cases fanfiction might actually be harder to write because you have to make sure the characters stay true to the standards someone else has set, which IMO can be a lot harder then keep characters in line to standards you came up with yourself. I can respect it if someone doesn't like a particular kind of story, but to dismiss pretty much everything without even really knowing the kind of effort that went into it and calling it all stealing without imagination, as a writer I take personal offense in that. Do you even have a good position to be shouting the things you are OANST? Havoc |
Art or products should never be about the artist's or maker's personality or work ethic. It's about the end product -- whether it's good or not. Empathetic bullshit like "knowing what effort was put in" shouldn't cloud someone's creative and artistic judgement. If it's shit, it's shit and Oanst has been saying that. Yes, it's respectable if the person put great effort into their work, but in the real world if your end product is bad then won't move ahead any farther.
And personally, I think Oanst is in a perfectly fine position to be shouting these things. I talk with him regularly and I can tell you he knows his shit when it comes to giving accurate critique about someone's work. From my own perspective, his critique is somewhat black and white, but that's certainly better than giving diluded feedback dosed up on friendly bullshit like I've seen many people in Fan Corner give. |

I am constantly writing. I write in many different genres ranging from plays to screenplays to short stories to my first novel that I just began (I thought I had good enough ideas for novels in the past but they always turned out to be short stories). So yeah, I know a little bit about the work involved in writing. And I can and will tell you now that the measure of good work is not in how hard it was to write. What makes work good is three things: style, relevance, and honesty. A fanfic may have the first but it will be completely lacking in the following criteria. I'm sorry if my brutal honesty disturbs you but 99 percent of working authors agree with me. At least the ones that are good do. Fanfiction is a waste of yours and your readers time. It is an exercise in futility. Some of you may be shaking your heads and saying "but gee you prick, it's good practice". Wrong. Completely wrong. If all you are practicing is mediocrity and plagiarism then that's all you are ever going to write. |

I thought it might be worth it to post one of our greatest living author's view on fanfiction. This is from Ursula K. LeGuin.
"I am absolutely opposed to it & have never given anyone permission to do so. It is lovely to "share worlds" if your imagination works that way, but mine doesn't; to me, it's not sharing but an invasion, literally — strangers coming in and taking over the country I live in, my heartland." Does that help any? |
Wow, I couldn't have said it better myself. That pretty much sums it up.
|
:
Anyway, at least your saying your stuff from an experienced standpoint, which already is a lot better then mindless jabbering which I at first suspected you off, sorry for that. Still I disagree with the "Fanfiction is a waste of yours and your readers time." statement for the sole reason that you can't decide what one wants to do with his or her time. A lot of people like to write or read fanfics, dispite it's quality. It might be your opinion, but don't try to publish it as a fact. Havoc |
:
If someone truly loves a piece of literature, they should leave it be, not try to continue it and take it in their own direction. In my opinion, that's disrespectful to the author's original vision of the story. |
For true. 10 characters.
|
i understand but some are good ,but come on, lets give it a rest ok.

It was at rest until you posted.

Ah, I am signed on to fanfiction.net. My pen name is SamBeckett94, like my Al's Place username and YouTube username. I am currently in production of a dozen stories, but have put no full stories up yet.
|
cool, im Salverto and ive put about four stories so far. ^^
|
I hate FF.net!
Tons of people just go there to write sexaul, racicst and gorey stories because they thinks its funny and it'll make them look kool. |
Actually, there's some nice stories I've read. And the Quantum Leap one I'm in production of's not gorey, sexual or racist. It's quite the opposite of gorey, sexual and racist.
|
I've never heard of "sexaul" or "racicst" stories. I do, however, see lots of ridiculous pairings, Mary Sues/Gary Stus, and torturously boring AU's.
