AquaticAmbi 06-27-2005 06:34 PM

I believe we're discussing new Mod elections as a solution to the problem(s) which is/are the subject of this thread. The elections of new will help reduce the number of undesired new members and old in some cases. I think it's the best thing we can do right now.

:

Ambi, if you're refusing to see things from my point of view, then that's your problem, not mine. All it does is gives you very little credibility when commenting on my motives.

I've tried to explain things and you're still finding excuses to carry on causing me grief, so it obviously isn't worth continuing. All I'm going to say is that if I didn't like this place, then I certainly wouldn't stay to put up with your shit. I've said and done things that I've regretted, some because of other people, and some because of me simply making mistakes. Nobody is perfect, not even moderators, because behind that title sits a human being, who is just as fallable as I am - the only thing we can do to make the situation better is to learn from our mistakes - and I'm not about to make this thread another situation that I have to learn from.

The topic of this thread is how we discern and treat trolls masquerading as ignorant newbies, and is not a discussion about my motives for posting this thread. I'm not about to prioritise defending my namesake over improving the state of this forum, so can we please all try to stay on track?

(Since I'm already replying to this thread, I'll go ahead and reply to this too. And also because you've attempted to make me appear incredible. PM me if you have anything else to say to me.)

I clearly stated I can see things from the specific point of view you talked about earlier, but I don't believe that's your sincere point of view towards the forums. I think you have underlying motives to be honest. Maybe you do, maybe you don't... Either way, you've had too many mixed feelings about the forums for me and a few others that I know of to feel comfortable with your having a position of power here.

Again, I did understand that point of view. As a matter of fact, it's quite like my own. I care for this place and want it to look decent and full of intellectuals, but I don't want it to look like a place where we chase away members who make a mistake or two with torches and stones.

You do make an excellent point about mistakes. Everyone makes them, and all should be given a few fair chances to make up for them and given time to get acquainted with the rules and peacefully settle in, unless the degree of mistakes is completely unforgivable and/or he or she is apparently what you call a "troll".

Edit: I mean gosh, Alcar, stop trying to test Dino.

Dave 06-27-2005 06:46 PM

I debated for a while about whether or not to post this ... and ultimately decided on "What the hell."
I wanna say first that I'm not trying to make any enemies, piss anyone off, or take sides... I'm making an observation.
:

Nobody is perfect, not even moderators, because behind that title sits a human being, who is just as fallable as I am

I know he isn't a mod, but does this rule of fallibility apply to Conker Rocket?
Sure, you'll probably barrage me with everything you've said about protecting the level of quality in these forums from trolls with nothing better to do ... but does that justify calling another human being, who is just as fallible as you, a troll who wants lisence to act like a moron. And you assume that he, if he were truly a nine-year-old, would be a collector of yu-gi-oh cards, typing in txt-spk, and improperly using (or completely omitting) commas.
I appreciate that you are looking out for OWF's image, even if only to make sure you look good via association to the forums, and I agree with you on this point. I don't feel that inexperienced people who tend to waste the time of serious forumers should be allowed to impede upon a forum's high standards. Make a forum especially for newbies or something. Whatever.
But you need to realize the very real chance that Conker may well be nine years old and afraid to come to a forum he might well have joined to talk with fellow Oddworld enthusiasts because everyone wants to ban him for being him. I'm not saying this is definate, but there is always the possibilty.
This turned out to be a longer post than I originally planned ... but I stick by it. If someone wants to argue and show me why I'm wrong, I will read intently and either rephrase or withdraw my statement.

Then I ask you; what good does a new moderator do if he isn't really allowed to use his better judgement to work out who is and isn't a troll? If I was made a moderator tomorrow, I would do my duties by the book, no question about that, but probably the largest problem that we get at OWF is the one that the mods aren't really allowed to deal with properly, so really me doing my duties wouldn't solve the problem that my job requires me to deal with.

:

And also because you've attempted to make me appear incredible.

And you've not been doing the same to me?

Using your "suspicions" as a license and justification for causing me all kinds of grief. Calling me mawk, codek, whatever, when you offer no proof at all except for "you're so similar". Saying I have underlying motives, and basically insinuating that I'm lying, without ANY proof whatsoever - all discrediting me and the validity of what I'm saying, so that you can further your argument and unknown causes.

:

I think you have underlying motives to be honest.

Really? Good, that's nice. Nobody cares. Write it all down on a conspiracy theory website if you want. Just stop using your stupid unproveable hunches/gut feelings as an excuse to go offtopic with the specific intent of discrediting my efforts to help out. I'm god damn tired of it. I'd just for once like to not have everything I do questioned as though I'm a suspect for a murder case. I don't understand what it is you even want - why are you telling me that you think that I have underlying motives? What do you want me to do about it? What good do you think bringing up this shit does?

:

Maybe you do, maybe you don't... Either way, you've had too many mixed feelings about the forums for me and a few others that I know of to feel comfortable with your having a position of power here.

Aside from the fact that I have no idea where you got the idea that I would be in a position of power...

Yes, you and hobo. Funny how it's always the same people. The one period of time that I fucking hated this place was the time when you and hobo made it a miserable place for me to be, and your sole justification for doing that was based on an unproven and unprovable rumour.

I'd say that out of all the people on the forum, it's the people who do things like that who I would least trust as a moderator.

:

Again, I did understand that point of view. As a matter of fact, it's quite like my own. I care for this place and want it to look decent and full of intellectuals, but I don't want it to look like a place where we chase away members who make a mistake or two with torches and stones.

Conker_Rocket made a "mistake or two" did he? Funny because the last time I checked, your boyfriend is actually getting totally fed up with him and Alpha's shit. And Alpha has 800+ posts, so he should know better. You make a good attempt to discredit me by making me look overly harsh and elitist, but to be honest when you consider that SeaRex (and SO many other people) is just as fed up as I am, I believe it puts your motives for discrediting me in question.

As well as your motives for accusing me of lying, using a duplicate account, and having ulterior motives for making this thread.

And I said I wouldn't even continue to argue with you... tsk tsk, guess I should learn to not make statements like that unless I'm sure I can keep to them. Oh well, my first paragraph continues the topic of the thread at least.

AquaticAmbi 06-27-2005 08:17 PM

I go "rwar" at you. I was NEVER one of the people who accused you of being mawk/codek/whoever. You need to stop accusing me of doing things I didn't do.

I mentioned the uncomfortableness with you being in a position of power because I know you're wanting to be an OT mod. A gut feeling is a gut feeling. Nothing more, I know. But nevertheless, I get power-hungry vibes from you.

As for Conker_Rocket, I was not talking about him in the part you quoted me on. How convenient for you to have left out the part where I said, "...unless the degree of mistakes is completely unforgivable and he or she is apparently what you call a 'troll'." That part is in reference to Conker_Rocket. There shouldn't have been need for further explanation on that.

:

Maybe I get "you're codek" vibes off of you? Or perhaps it's just the fact that you said that if I'm not codek, you'd apologise on behalf of the people who believe that I'm codek - why else would you apologise on behalf of a group of people if you don't feel that you're part of that group? You can't really apologise on behalf of a mindset that you don't subscribe to. That would be like me apologising on behalf of George Bush for going to war with Iraq.

:

I am not wanting to be an OT mod. I'm not aiming for any positions of power, and I do not actively intend to run for moderator. Your gut feeling is NOT a goddamn reason to pester me about how you're so uncomfortable with the idea that I might end up as a moderator. It doesn't belong in this thread, and even if it did there's little point in bringing it up. If you don't want me to be a moderator, then simply don't vote for me. No need to bitch in public about it because frankly you're not convincing enough to sway anyone's opinion, if that's what you're trying to do.

:

I wasn't saying that you intended that part to be about Conker_Rocket, I was simply saying that it was misplaced and/or superflous, because it did not apply to anything in this thread. Nobody is talking about being harsh on newbies who make the odd mistake here and there, so there was no need to even mention such a thing.

Now, how about you show us all how much of a better person you are by continuing this in PM?

Or is your public image still at risk?

Alcar 06-27-2005 11:40 PM

I believe people are missin the point here: Ambi is one of the coolest chics we have here, along with my partner in crime, Rexy.

Alcar...

What does that have to do with the topic?

Damn but this topic really is confusing.
Anyways, I think C_R has settled down now. He aint making pointless topics anymore. Well, I don't remember who said it, and I'm too lazy to check. But i really agree, that we should wait banning the member or whatver, untill he/she is not a newbie anymore.

SeaRex 06-28-2005 06:30 AM

:

Funny because the last time I checked, your boyfriend is actually getting totally fed up with him and Alpha's shit.

Don't do that.

The fact that we're in a relationship in real life has nothing to do with her or my opinion on the matter, so don't go around throwing the whole "boyfriend" thing in her face.

Pretty please.

:

Yes, you and hobo.

Not just them two. There are several other people on this forum, including me. I don't think you have an ulteria motive, or anything like that, it's just I don't think you'd be a very productive moderator. However, that's a totally different subject...

As for Conker_Rocket. Several days after this thread is posted he seems to have stopped with the topics and threads. I don't think he's an issue anymore.

I still don't think we should verbally abuse newbies, but I think a tougher approach to "trolls" is in order.

And as for a person who really hates Oddworld. Ages ago [I mean along long time ago] someone joined called "Odd sucks Cock". :p Needless to say they were automatically banned.

i am SO confused

Last time i was around these forums Dino was so pissed he was leaving and never comming back. Guess that did not last long.
Now i see this.
:

Are you testing me or something? Why is there so much mention of moderators around me?

Could some one please explain to me how this issue about new mods revolves around Dino?

Then i see this,
:

I am not wanting to be an OT mod. I'm not aiming for any positions of power, and I do not actively intend to run for moderator. Your gut feeling is NOT a goddamn reason to pester me about how you're so uncomfortable with the idea that I might end up as a moderator. See, i don`t understand how someone who is not interested in being a MOD,
and not actively running for a MOD position, could end up being elected to said position.
Why would we vote for a person who is not running?

Oh, and by the by Sport, she IS convincing enough. Anyone who has fallowed
the developments from the " Konnichi Wa" post to the present ,does not need to be convinced of anything.
( not sure, but think Konnichiwa is one word)
Also found this exchange ,on 5/16/05, interesting.

:

So no, no I'm not 'mawk'.

:

You so are.

And this thread is pointless now. We have two other threads which basically say the same thing.

Alcar...

Gee, don`t know what to make of that. ;)

Oh god damnit, yes you caught me, I'm actually running for moderator in stealth mode, concealing my intentions as I go along, and issuing a series of subliminal messages designed to cause you to vote for me. And I would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for you meddling kids.

*Blushes along with Rexy* Aww, thankies, Uncle Alcy.

Anywho, as I said in our PMs, Dino, I do wish some of the things we said were public since they tied into my giving people who made early mistakes second chances thing. You've said that you're trying to change, and I guess it is a little hypocritical of me to continue the bringing up of "old" stuff--even though it was a mere month ago.

I forgot to mention how much you confuse me, giving me mixed feelings and such. Sometimes I think your a pretty fun and okay guy...

Other times, you just make me want to scream, "Go back to Bedrock!" :D

Yeah well, hopefully that won't happen any more. I don't know why I'm always so pissed off... it's not really like me. It's just being here that does it I think. Anyway I'm going to try to change that and be less cynical, pessimistic, and angry. From now on, I'm going to be so laid back that they'll have to suspend my keyboard from the ceiling. :D

I would make a great moderator - make me one and you'll just adore me.

Ô_ó

No.

Let's close this thread.

Rich 07-02-2005 11:43 PM

I can see a ton of people on here with great potential to be moderators.

Dipstikk 07-03-2005 12:01 AM

Death to spammers! *thrusts staff in the air*

Leto 07-03-2005 12:14 AM

I second the notion of Mod elections. If it was a notion.

Rich 07-03-2005 12:16 AM

Alcar has already agreed to it. Bring it on!

Leto 07-03-2005 12:19 AM

Oddish I don't really think that you're in any position to comment on anything relating to this guy. You're so damn naive it's a wonder that you ever notice anything at all, let alone the fact that you're playing right into this guy's hands.

I just... can't believe how everyone is missing the obvious. If this guy really is 9 years old, how do you think he manages to type better than stingbee? And how do you think he managed to find this thread in the FS&H forum, when he made a ton of posts in OT that should've been in FS&H? It's such an unlikely coincidence.

This guy is a troll who has deliberately falsified his birthdate to give himself a license to act like a moron and piss everyone off but not get banned for it. OWF is one big soft touch that trolls are just taking advantage of.

1) Stingbee's a retard.
2) Yeah, ban the infant. OWF is no place for babies.

Truthfully, neither of the pair know punctuation or spelling, and it pisses me off. I think both of them should be banned. And that little *unleashes inner bitch* shit Snoozer and his irritating posts on absolute crap.

Dino 07-03-2005 03:57 AM

:/

Soulstice that was a little harsh... correction, very harsh. These kids are annoying, yes, and I know I've had a right old go at them in the past, but look at it this way; if you were on oddworld forums when you were 9 or 10 years old, you'd probably have been equally annoying, if not then more so.

Agh, I really think me going out on a crusade against these people with this thread was a bad idea. Just dealing with it in the usual way, like closing their silly threads, encouraging them to read the rules, and doing so calmly, has a much more desireable long term effect - I could be accused of being equally as annoying as some of these newbies at certain points in my membership here, but if it wasn't for the tolerance and patience of these people here, then I would've been banned. What's not to say that these people won't grow up to be decent, respectable, well spelled members of our forum here? It's happened to me before when I ran a forum, and it's probably happened here too.

I agree that we shouldn't hesitate to ban if the user earns it - we shouldn't be more lenient just because they're young. They're never going to learn to behave if they get leniency. But that doesn't mean that my earlier posts are justified, or that we should all have an uprising. They're annoying, stupid, closely resemble retards, but just remember that's how you were once, so have a chuckle, humour them a bit, remind them of the rules and just keep it fair and above the belt. K?

Rich 07-03-2005 04:03 AM

My God! This coming from Dino, the king of dumbass beating?

You really have changed your ways, I can see you becoming more liked around here. Even though I've always thought you were cool.

I still think we should thrash people, but in the style of Dippstikk and Super Munch.

Fuzzle Guy 07-03-2005 06:23 AM

I see what you mean, but multiple warnings from a lot of members hasn't rubbed off or changed anything. I know you see that too.

About the harsh thing, I'm a harsh person. Also, I could use correct punctuation and spelling when I was 6, possible even younger. To me, there's no excuse for the stupidity that these young members display. They should also know that the topics they're interested in don't necessarily interest the older members, and so therefore shouldn't post these annoying posts one after the other. Especially after they've seen their threads being closed and after receiving numerous warnings.

P.S. Being harsh is probably the only way to sort these young posters out. 'Above the belt' discipline hasn't had any effect, as we've all seen... They're a source of perpetual aggravation and cause more annoyance than anything else. At the end of the day, they're irritating. I'm not going to bottle my mouth to keep some infants happy, it's not the way I do things.

And basically yeah, like I said, humour them a little, have a bit of a laugh at their expense, make them realise that they're making a fool of themselves, there really is no greater motivator.

And Soulstice, sometimes you just have to stick with it. He didn't change his ways straight away but he did eventually. It just requires driving the message home occasionally.

My dark, evil, humorous side is always going to be in there somewhere though.
