1) I'm not going to die for a long time (presumably).
2) No one knows what happens when you die.
3) Eh, life's not that great. It might as well end sometime.

So no, I'm not scared of death.

So. A pope has died. I think it's the first time it has happened in my lifetime. Now I can say to my children one day, "Y'know, I was fifteen when Pope John Paul II died." And they'll say, "Who cares? We're not Catholic."

This isn't as exciting as I might have thought.

He was 84, Oddish. According to MSN.

mudling 04-02-2005 01:07 PM

it's a bit sad, but i don't realy like the news of anyone dying.
i am a little bit afraid of death, i don't realy know why.

I must of miss calculated, 10 years ahead.

The Pope John Paul II has died. He was from my country...

Janie Pawle Drugi, żaden Polak nigdy cię nie zapomni. Na zawsze w naszych sercach...

Kimon 04-02-2005 01:50 PM

Yeah, now he's dead. I'm a Christian, but not really devout. However, I do feel kinda bad that he died. He was a really great guy, did lots of stuff for the religion. I don't usually care when someone famous dies, but the Pope was actually a cool guy. And there are 30,000 people mourning in the Vatican City now, so I'm guessing it's going to have a pretty big impact.

TheRaisin 04-02-2005 01:54 PM

Kimon, unless you're Catholic, his death should have no effect on your religion.

And what exactly did he do?

Abeguy 04-02-2005 03:08 PM

On April fools day, they said that he died, but it wasn't true.
If he's going to die, then I won't have the fun of having a huge religous debate with him:(

Abeguy 04-02-2005 03:25 PM

Pope Actulley dies

Not cool about his death, though
Sure I'm Jewish, but I didn't want this guy to die.
Too bad.
Sorry Catholics.

Paco_the_Taco 04-02-2005 03:26 PM

It's a terrible thing when any person dies...unless they were causing serious problems for others that would only be stopped by their death.

Does this sound like I'm suggesting the Pope did that? It's not meant to.

Dino 04-02-2005 07:57 PM

:

Oh yes, and that brings me on to something else. Are any of you scared of death? I'm not because I know that it's something everyone has to face at one time or another.

When you're posting in a thread, it's considered bad manners to change the topic and steer the conversation, so PLEASE avoid doing that in future, because it's really annoying AND quite rude. I made this thread to discuss the pope passing away, not to discuss whatever it is that you want to discuss, so I don't really appreciate you hijacking my thread to use it for your own purposes. If you really want a discussion about mortality, go make your own thread.

And Oddish, the pope was 84 when he died, not 75.

Kimon 04-02-2005 08:04 PM

Raisin, I am Catholic. And where did I say his death would affect my religion? If you're talking about the impact his death will have, I was talking on gloabl terms, not religious. The guy was well-liked.
As for what the guy did, he changed the idea of solemn, closed-minded Christian attitude to the accepting and all encompassing Catholic we know today (sarcasm). Seriously though, he put a much more liberal spin on the religion by tolerating other cultures and religions instead of shunning or slandering them. Plus he was a nice guy. Just like Jesus. :)

Dino 04-02-2005 08:44 PM

I totally dig the whole tolerating thing.

Biggy Bro Slig 04-02-2005 09:38 PM

What? I haven't heard or seen anything about his death. Are you sure?

Alcar...

Yep, he's dead, he died about 9-10pm

Rich 04-02-2005 10:53 PM

Now someone else shall replace him. Life goes on.

As for fearing Death, I don't actually feel scared of dying. All I feel is dissapointment for not being able to live longer and witness mankinds greatest achievements.

Alcar...
He died at 9:37 p.m.

Five 04-02-2005 11:19 PM

yes, I've just heard that too from my mom. Well, I must say that I'm a believing person, I mean- I believe that >something<, not exacly >someone<, exists and is watching over us. I don't believe that this existenceis 100% pure and good, but I believe anyway. It is comfortable for me to think that when I'm talking (not praying), someone is listening (maybe not interested in what I'm saying and does nothing with it, but is listening anyway). And I like to think that there is something after the death of our body- not a place like 'heaven', but a state of our soul/ghost/whatever....kinda hard to explain. But to make a long story short- I don't believe in church, though I believe in >god< If you like to call it that.
But yet- I felt bad after I've heard about pope's death. He was a good man and I respected him just for that. He never said that we, humans, are only worthless ashes, comparing to the god's grace, and we have to spend our whole life on our knees praying to him to forgive us our sins and kill/abuse any other religion (like priests enjoy to remind us to do at every step). No. Instead he was able to talk with young people, and trying to prove them that every human is worthy to live on this world as long as we will be good for eachother. I don't like most of the priests and I'm not a regular guest in church...but I still respected pope.
But when I think more and more about it- I feel relief. He was very old (and survived a terrible 'accident', that was a miracle already), and seeing him in a condition that he was for a few years was making me feel uncomfortable and very sorry for him (not even understanding what he was saying sometimes). I just wanted for him to retire (I'm surprised that he didn't) and for everybody (believers) to give him a break. Sure- he was a pope, but above all that- he was a human. Now all the pain for him is over, and maybe his soul reached the state, that church calls 'heaven'? I sure hope so.
I just wish that his death wasn't so painful. He suffered enough in his life.

AquaticAmbi 04-03-2005 06:05 AM

At first, I wasn't affected enough to say more than, "Aww, poor old guy." But after hearing about some of the things he did, assuming they're all completely true, he was a pretty great guy. I especially respected how he tried to reach out to other faiths, and he was the first Pope to say you don't have to convert to go to Heaven when he was trying to show tolerance and such for people of other religions, especially the Jews.

I do wish I recognized these qualities while he was alive, but I'm not Catholic, so I guess I really never felt the need to find out what kind of guy he was.

Wait, weren't you the one who made the 'What do you look like?' thread into a 'Criticizing Dress Codes' thread?! Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't ever recall that thread being called 'What do you dress like?' and I'm sure you don't either. Let's not get silly about this, now. Practise what you preach. Hypocrite.

soulstice 04-03-2005 06:43 AM

Oh, and as for the other post Dino, you can say whatever the hell you like because hardly any threads always contain posts that are specific to the given topic. It's just human nature to stray into linking topics out of curiosity and interest. So what you said really has no weight with me.

Godlesswanderer 04-03-2005 07:21 AM

Watch that double post of yours.

Anyway, I was quite surprised at how much the pope could do. Sure he's the pope and everything but I didn't think one man could help to do all that stuff (ie. help end communism, etc.).

Dino 04-03-2005 10:06 AM

That thread was about what people look like, and the last time I checked, the way people dress comes under the catagory of what people look like, since it plays a large part in the way people look. Now, at this point I would forgive you for being wrong (since you asked me to), but because you called me a hypocrite, (and that's not very nice) I'm not going to.

By the way, your double post really dented your credibility. I'd avoid doing that in future if I were you.

soulstice 04-03-2005 11:56 AM

Well, I didn't ask for forgiveness. Especially not from you. I don't expect to be forgiven by anyone - I don't appreciate being patronised and I won't be by you. And, you began talking about dress codes, so in a sense you did what I did in your post. You began straying off the topic and posts followed that began to discuss your estrangement from the topic. The 'What do you look like?' thread was more of a thread to see how people look like facially, not to debate their clothes. You also could've quite politely asked me not to stray off your topic, but as you did so in a rather impolite way, I don't think you can criticize my credibility and I don't appreciate someone who doesn't even remotely know me comment on my credibility. I didn't know people got so petty over someone posting twice. I wasn't planning on posting twice, but as I thought I wouldn't be posting in this thread for a while, I posted two views at the same time. What's the difference? Me posting twice at different time slots or posting twice at the same time? Enlighten me.

AquaticAmbi 04-03-2005 12:16 PM

People get so irritated by that because it's one of the most clearly stated rules of the forums. By the way, Dino, you're now equally responsible for the hijacking of your own thread.

Anywho... Mmyep... Poor Pope guy. I found it sort of funny that the crowd of people had to be told to be quiet so he could sleep though. I didn't mention earlier, like others, that I hated that he suffered so much in his last days. But at least it's over now, and he's in a better place now if you believe in that sort of thing.

Disgruntled Intern 04-03-2005 12:49 PM

I went to the screen-printer and had one hundred 'anti pope' t-shirts printed off.

I sold every one of them for twenty dollars a piece.

The best part was that the news was covering his memorial service at LA's biggest catholic church, and I saw several people outside wearing my shirts. I'm great.

Statikk HDM 04-03-2005 06:54 PM

JP II was the most liberal pope in CENTURIES. All we can do is hope for someone half as tight as JP II.

Old man dies. Old man wears a cone hat. Life continues.

I made a cone out of paper for my guinea pig to wear upon his head, so I consider him the new pope.

:

The 'What do you look like?' thread was more of a thread to see how people look like facially, not to debate their clothes.

People always comment on hair, clothes, jewellery etc. - from what I've read (and I've been reading this forum for years) this is the way it always has been and everyone has been fine with it. So for you to just suddenly arrive in all your glory, a newbie poster who's been here for less than 3 months, and start dictating the purpose of the 'what do you look like?' thread, is clearly rediculous.

:

You also could've quite politely asked me not to stray off your topic, but as you did so in a rather impolite way, I don't think you can criticize my credibility and I don't appreciate someone who doesn't even remotely know me comment on my credibility.

What you did was not polite, and therefore doesn't warrant a polite reaction. You didn't just stray off topic, you literally just tried to completely hijack the topic. If you did that to someone in a real life social situation, people would be equally pissed off.

Actually soulstice, Dino is right. Although he didn't ask nicely, commenting on clothes does matter with appearance. I suppose if one of the male members posted a pic of him wearing a dress, you wouldn't comment on his clothes?

But seriously, why was he doing that? Is there any sort of explanation?

You're too persistent. Can't you just leave it? 'Forgive me if I'm wrong' is a figure of speech and rhetorical-meant to emphasize someone elses negative-if you're an English speaker, you really should know this and the fact that you don't is rather strange. Gosh, you're like a baby who's lost their dummy. It's over! You really need to learn how to move on. And as I see it, you're not exactly and extremely established member here either, so, once again-don't try to make yourself seem higher than me. You're clearly not. You should really learn how to move on. This is where it ends. Full stop. If you carry it on, then it'll be like posting to a brick wall, because I have no time for people who aren't even remotely worth it. Oh, but one question. What do you mean by 'welcome to nirvana'-the Hindu/Buddhist release from the Agniputra (wheel of life)? Or the band?
