Adder, interesting idea, but of course if topics were removed from the server, no one would be able to access them. And while for a large number of threads, this would be pretty blazé, but there's a wealth of interesting discussion in OWF's history. And it would be hell sifting through it all to find out what's good and what's not. And I don't know how that would affect users' post counts.

This is definately something I'll go straight out and say no to. Deleting old threads just won't happen.

Why?... surely there is a system that will tell you if they've ever been read.. never mind posted on... for months!

I wouldn't have a problem with it... some of my "finest work" has been deleted off other forums... but thats what happens when you're a long term poster... Administration can't be expected to save everything and let it clog up cyber space indefinitely!

Just a thought...

I'm a mod on vbullentin, and Alcar is right, it would be hell going through all of the old posts. Not to mention new members might find them interesting/valuable to them (perhaps reducing the number of "what's a slig" questions).

And if old posts are deleted, your post count WILL go down. We had this happen when the mods/admins did a cleanout, and people lost posts, some in the thousands, it all just depends on if the threads they posted in were deleted or not. And while you think post count, bah who cares. People care. Trust me!

Alcar, I didn't really mean []deleting[/i]. Maybe archiving, so that they're not floating around the Zulags?

If they were elsewhere, less people would accidentaly view a really old thread that's long since dead, but they would still be searchable for data.

I'll admit, I haven't thought about this a lot, it's just a brainstorm idea.

Got rid of it, i'm a constantly changing person. Who thinks I should go back to my original Universal Soldier avatar?

Alcar 04-17-2004 12:39 AM

Oh, Fuzzles!, what is your name on the vBulletin forums?

Adder, we can't really archive the threads, as that is an even larger task then simply closing all of them :p

I like it how it is. I've never had any problems with it. Right at the start it all seemed natural anyway. I don't think I've ever remembered a day when I complained about the OWFs layout.

And Alcar I need to have a word with you a bit later.

Archiving old threads won't really effect bandwidth anyways ... especially since most people only view threads from the last 30 days.

And bandwidth is a webmaster's nightmare. Particularly when you are running a major site. Advent Children.net uses anywhere between 200-300+ GB bandwidth a month. It's a nightmare. Our main server has an allocation of 150 GB/month, and of that we are currently using around 130 GB/month. On top of that there are media servers [well not really servers, but more so 100 MB allocations of webspace which I name media1, media2, etc] which someone has kindly donated for the site. I use these for all of the trailers I have on the site, and although they are not bandwidth monitored, they do remove our files if we are using too much. Media server 1 had all it's files removed a couple of weeks back ... what a nightmare! I had to re-upload everything onto the next media server!!!

Maybe one day someone will donate me some webspace for Oddworld-Web's media [the movies and the Oddworld Internet Explorer]. ;)

I'm sure someone is making money off bandwidth out there. And not the hosting providers. We get bandwidth allocations through our ISPs for downloads, yet site owners pay for bandwidth uploads and downloads. So someone is making double out there.
