Will Work For Spooce

Want a job at Oddworld? Before signing, all new hires are required to hear McKenna's hour-long lecture about the company to let them know what they're getting into. Here's a taste:

"I want someone that is totally passionate about what they do. I want them to love games, to love what they're creating. I want them to work hard and strive to be the best. Unfortunately, some people have their predjudices and I'm not going to be able to stop that, but I do make it known that they cannot bring them into this studio. I happen to believe that positive energy helps and that negative energy is harmful. I am not a big believer in competition. I believe that if you work as a team and you work with positive energy, that will transfer into the product. I believe that the reason that the people fell in love with Abe is because the people creating it loved Abe and I believe that comes through. You don't have to agree with me, you just have to do what I say. And you can pretend. Pretending's fine."

wow, thanx a bunch Oddguy!
glad to hear there is no competition inside OWI
the opposite would have surprised me ;)

MojoMan220 03-10-2004 05:17 PM

That was a good read, thanks oddguy! It will be interesting to see how the story comes together, in CG and in-game. Lorne and the crew don't want to screw this one up, no matter how long it takes. I can't wait to learn more.

With Munch getting in his gargantuan alter ego in would be a snap. It can be summed up in one word:Shrylkyl(major spelling)
Anyhow, after Munch does a couple of his mega Boy Scout's Good Deed For The Day type actions he can choose to store up a dam of good quarma and righteous indignation that will when prompted shatter and turn him into a gigantic Tesla-coil spewing avenger. And who'd help him with this? Big Mask and other Native spirit guides. Its a stretch but it ain't impossible. Not only that, it gets rid of those Sobe vending machines. It wouldn't be a big part, maybe just an integral one.Anyhow, various spiritual shiznit could be wrangled into the story to compensate for the lack of Vykker tinkering.

Also, LL shouldn't beat himself up for Munch at all, of all the Oddworld games I liked it the best. If OWI feels the game wasn't up to snuff it was partly Microsoft's fault for pressuring the company to release it as a launch title.

Munch was originally going to be a Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde type character, aye? That is fascinating news. I love knowing what might have made the games, although OWI are probably right it's not best to know what those things are before the game is finished. However, regarding this plot device being integrated into ME... I don't think it will. Why not?

There's already a Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde thing going on in Stranger. ;)

Statikk HDM 03-20-2004 07:13 AM

Really? Which species or character? I wouldn't be surprised if that sinister looking trucking dude in Sligslinger's avatar was a Clakker that snapped.

Esus 03-20-2004 07:34 AM

umm, Stranger is the " Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde thing".
Ya know, one minute he looks all civilised and normal, next minute he appears as a ferocious beast from tartarus :p

oddguy 03-20-2004 07:57 AM

I never thought of Stranger as the "Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde guy." It makes sense now, but when I think of Mr. Hyde, I think of a guy that isn't in control of his own weird powers.

Would Stranger be like this?

Esus 03-20-2004 08:13 AM

I don't think he would. Much would've been, ebcause he can't control his adrenaline, but I believe Strangers true form to be something he controls - hence the fact he is disguised during the first part of the game, and later "reveals" his true colours (and form).

Oddsville 03-20-2004 06:55 PM

I'd think that Stranger (for one reason or another) dosn't know of his true form and some how, through spiritual pourposes, finds out later. It is interesting which ever way you look at it however. Hopefully we'll get some story info soon!

Didn't Lorne actually mention in the Polygon article, that there was competition between some employees (during the development of Munch's Oddysee)? Though, I think the ones in question, left. Pity, as they were extremely good. But, that's not to say there aren't any good ones left *waves banner with words: "Go Babbar! Go Swanland!"*

Purely speculation, but I'd imagine it's between the boat that Stranger has some connection with. Or is my speculation purely wrong? :p

well right now... there aren't any competitions anymore inside OWI itself, according to the Polygon Mag :fuzwink:

A Jekyll/Hyde connection between Stranger and his boat?

Alright, what version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde have you been reading?

I think that particular relationship is more like in ICO, as really early micro articles hinted, though I don't see how exactly. I'm sure the inspiration of horns comes from ICO, though. You're right that it's all speculation, though. ;)
