Gluk Schmuck 06-20-2002 12:35 PM

That's simple, Anna. Oddworld could spin faster.

One, Two, Middlesboogie 06-20-2002 02:06 PM

Why does spinning faster reduce its gravity?

MojoMan220 06-20-2002 02:31 PM

Yah, if it spun faster there would be more gravity, not less... like when you spin a bucket with water in it.

Xavier 06-20-2002 02:58 PM

no... just less gravity... what you describe can be for a "planet" like Halo.

kleeng 06-20-2002 03:23 PM

Still no MAIL :( :fuzsad: :crying: :( :fuzsad: :crying: :(

But to go on with the gravity thing.
Its not size that matters but mass. It depends on how heavy oddworld is. Earth has a crust a mantle and a core.
the crust is made up of just rock, the mantle is made of molten rock (wich is a lot denser and thus heavyer then the normal rock of the crust) and a solid iron core wich is denser then the rock or molten rock.
If odd world dousent have an iron core the waight would already be substancialy reduced and thus the gravity is reduced too.
This alone probably won't do the trick but there are other factors at play. Like the many moons of oddworld who pull at it surfase, the spinn of the planet, other factors canceling out gravety like the above sugested spooce and the logikal adaptation of life to the gravity of oddworld

One, Two, Middlesboogie 06-20-2002 04:32 PM

Hmmm... thanks kleeng; good info there. I'd forgotten that mass (not size) dictates gravitational force.

Just had a new though re: possible things tht could cancel out the gravity. Niteowl mentions in her fic that it could be cancelled out by the same force that makes the Security Orbs hover.

But the problem with the points kleeng raised, as I see it, is that if it is so big, Oddworld will automatically have an iron (or similar dense metal) core, because of the weight of its mantle and lithosphere compressing the core. Even Jupiter, which is mostly liquid and gas, has a solid iron core.

However, this is assuming that it does indeed have a lithosphere and mantle. As Niteowl pointed out in her fic, "There did not seem to be a lot of seismic activity on this planet. The precarious architecture he'd [one of the characters] seen wouldn't have survived otherwise."

So, does Oddworld indeed have tectonic plates? Earth's interior is liquid (with the exception of the inner core, which would be liquid but is solid due to the weight of the other layers which compress it), and lithospheric plates float on top and move around continuously, but very slowly.
Could Oddworld's crust be one single piece? And its interior gaseous? If so, it would probably have a liquid core, because such a huge quantity of gas would be compressed.

But is it that huge? If we look at my diagram again, we can see that if diameter is the comparitive criterion, Oddworld is vast. But if it is 10 times bigger by volume or surface area, it is comparitively very small, and not vastly bigger than Earth.

Alf 06-20-2002 11:22 PM

One more point.
Abe and the Muds did not leave from Monsaic Lines, but from Monsaic Sanctum.
check out universe/native/facilities on the website.

There is no point of reference to where the Monsaic Sanctum is in relation to Necrum Mines.

but I love all the charts!!!

Unfourtionatly my printer will not print so I can't make one of those nifty little tea bags like atusiya@ did. Oh the horror WAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!! Help me Alf I need my printer to work!!!!! I know jsut getting kissed by a Slig is not the best thing to happen to you right before you fix a printer so sorry!!!! I would ask my Vykker friend Alex to do it for me but he's too busy all the time and whenever I go to his house he always tries to zap me. He did get me a few times but can ya help me Alfy? Pleeeeeeease? Now I'm really getting desperate, I'm asking my hero to fix my printer!!!! Sheesh!!!
Was repair of your printer completed?
Let's drink tea together early.;)
BUT..
Without knowing why, there is the scent of the "Lipton tea" in my "Alf's tea" ????:D

oddling 06-21-2002 12:00 AM

No it still isn't workng!!!! This is making me really mad cause I wanna print the Oddworld map for my cousin Jenna to see and go emmbarrass myself by showing everyone I know that Alf's tea bag thing and have evryone think I'm weird when I try to explane who Alf is to them, but cause my printer dosn't work I can't!!!!!! Plus Saturday is my dads birthday and I wanna make him a birthday card on the computer. It's gonna have that picture of Munch and Abe looking confused and inside it's going to say "you're how old?" he's gonna be 38 so that answers the question. Anyway if anyone knows how to fix my printer please tell me!!! And yes it's very strange that you're Alfs tea bag smells like Lipton tea atusiya@!!!

Heres my two cents about oddworlds gravity...

For one thing I think it would only make sence if it was Oddworlds surface area that was 10x more then Earths since that is where life lives, and we are only intrested in it life, so that is the only one that would mater anyone... On the the other hand if we wanted to blow up Oddworld we would be intrested in its Volume... And if we wanted to know how hard a astroied would hit it we would want to know how thick it was so that we could figer out its gravity...

So in surface area on One, Two, Middlesboogie pic it seems to look about 3 times wider then Earth... Therefore it probly has less then 3 Gs of gravity (1 G is 1 Earth gravity) if it is the same composition as Earth... But my gess is that its is totaly different in side from Earth (it is a Odd-World after all) because other wise it may have formed a thick atmostsphere (like a gas giant)... As such I think it would have a much lower gravity and from observation one that is simular to Earths...

I think that Oddworld gets its lower then expected surface gravity by being very holely (lots of deep caverns and caves) and down deep the air in these caves is so dence that it liquerfies and is heated by the core...

Sometimes fault lines form on these caverns and let the liquid air gush to the surface and as it rises it expands back to become gas and cools from that expansion to become room temprature... And so we get air wells that surface life has learned to use tho their advantage.

Also I would like to point out that a planets size has not much afect on where from the sun it will be nor dose it have a huge effect on how long it takes to orbit its sun (if Earth was at a Jupiter distance from the sun it would orbit the sun almost as fast as Jupiter dose)... Also (in general in our own solar system anyway) larger planets tend to spin faster (have shorter days) then smaller ones, although this is no law or anything... Spining fast dose decress the aparent surface gravity through centrapetal motion around the eqator- which flatens the planet out making the poles come closer together which lowers the average gravity quite a bit...

In other news... I STILL HAVE NOT GOT MY EMAIL... :crying: :crying: :crying:

TheKhanzumer 06-21-2002 03:33 AM

Remeber that there are forces on oddworld that we don't have on earth. Although we can't explain them, they still work the way they do. Some examples: gravity, spooce, the wierdos, possesion, the whole bird-mudokon-symbiosis-teleportation thing, etc...

That's why, Anna. It doesn't actually reduce the gravity, it just increases the centrapetal force which makes it seem like there were less gravity.

Here's a practical experient for you: Sit on a round-about and spin it. The faster it spins, the more you get pulled outwards. The same happens with planets.

Alf 06-21-2002 06:42 PM

Thanks to all you fans, I'm going back to the drawing board with the map. geez, all those brews must of made me forget stuff.
Monsaic Sanctum is indeed in Monsaic Lines.
It's the last time I have Buddy ask a Slig for help.
So...stay tuned!
warmest regards and hope I don't fall off the wagon cuz of this,
Alf:crying:

Xavier 06-22-2002 06:17 AM

So we can espect a new version of the map?
thank you Alf!
maybe next month :)

kleeng 06-22-2002 11:14 AM

If oddworld consists of one piece then it would be a dead planet. Becous of its lack of seismick activety no mountenous or high areas would be formed. Becous of erosion and lack of mounten formations would become compleatly flat.

So there has to be some tectonick schifting or other geological things happening on oddworld. But the gassious thing that could be plausible if the gass was condensed and heavy enoug, so the surface rock would have floated to the surface during formation of the planet. Other wise it would sink to the center of gravty like most of the iron on our planet went to the center when it was formd.

Or maibe it's something different all together. Something like anti gravety inbedded in the rock coutering the gravety of oddworld.

And iv just thought of another factor. The dencety of the air. If its verry dence and compressed it would counter gravety like water does. Becous that is dense and we are less dense or equaly dense we fall slower in water. And the odd worldians wouldent have a problem with the presure of this much denser air becous theyr adapted to it. Just like deep ocean fisch are adapted to the whater pressure there.

So more then enoug theorys to choos from, but wich one is true. :fuzconf:

Kaimana 06-26-2002 10:19 PM

I got this e-mail a while ago its real cool i got to watch some OW movies that i never saw before and i got to hear the intern song that beat is cool:fuzgrin:

Xavier 06-27-2002 02:50 AM

movies?
there where movies in the mail?
I only found mp3's

did I miss something?

Kaimana 06-27-2002 04:15 AM

well there were clips of Munch and Abe above a mob of Mudokon warriors it was a small clip and there was a music video as well. if memory serves.

Xavier 06-27-2002 04:56 AM

I can't find this video...
are you shure it's on the page alf send?

Kaimana 06-27-2002 05:09 AM

yes im sure it was a page were i needed to enter a password that alf gave me and the first thing i went to was this video with munch and abe talking to a mob of warrir mudokons on a hill with a building that spins its roof forgive me i forgot what they call it i gata go back to sydneys site and check it out ...but any way thats what i saw.:fuzblink:

Xavier 06-27-2002 05:12 AM

I think you are talking about the US advertising which is disponible without code...

Hehe! It takes a lot of time to gain a name here. Like Xavier and his image finding capabilities, or Max the Mug as the Oddworld Encyclopedia or the Khanzumer as the Oddworld Dictionary, or Pilot as Oddworld's number one fan!

There are more, unfortunately i don't stick out in anyway to have some sort of unique name, just call me Alcar! :)

Xavier 06-27-2002 05:33 AM

you can try...
but it's hard :D

Kaimana 06-27-2002 05:38 AM

well i will try or maybe i will just remain a common fan .... However what counts is that i love Any thing to do with Oddworld and thanks to you guys you have given me more reason to stay that way. Just call me a honest Mud.

Al the Vykker 06-27-2002 01:16 PM

This is what I wanted from Oddowlrd giving its true fans who have stayed with them, what we've wanted, more and more info on the secrets of Oddoworld. The map is awesome I opened the email last week cuz my comp was down for a couple weeks. Anyways thanx so much Alf !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) :D :fuzwink:  You truly listened to ud.

Allright enough of my blabbing. Thanx for giving us what we wanted all along.

Oh, I wouldn't say that. After all, you're the only Oddworldian Forumer to have the title of Rok...whatever that is.

the 2nd mail

I changed the mail address in August.

Therefore, I was not reading the 2nd mail@sent from Alf.
The mail has been noticed for the first time today.
Thank you, Alf. !!

Did you read already the 2nd mail?

Fart!!!
Many sound effects!

Greetings from Odd, Rehabitants!!!
Well well, itfs been a while since the first ever mass email from olf Alfie, and a lot is going on here at Oddworld. I was gone for a few days respite from the rehab; I had to cleanse the system of all this purity on a wagon ride to Las Fertile Plain. But I am back to my bitter old tea drinking self, despite being a little behind on my workload of beverage brewing and question answering. Being behind and in the middle of an absolutely fantastic summer, the folks at Oddworld thought thisfd be the perfect time to give the web site a makeover, so you may not see much change between now and September. Bummer you say? Bum not my friends! Alf will keep you informed via email on the information soooooperhighway!

If you haven't already heard, Alf isn't the only one who's been on the dusty old traveling trail these days. A couple of kids from the forums have been traversing the back roads of earth in search of other Inhabitants for weeks now. That's right, Pilot and Abe Babe of forums fame spent an entire day hanging out with the crew at the Oddworld Studio. Then they moved on to experience mystery, intrigue, and mini golf in SoCal and the Southwest. They are now in Australia, dodging boomerangs and kangaroos, and in search of all things Odd. If any of you see them out there, raise your paw and give them a hello!

Also in international news, Xbox is to be released in six new countries this year. Yes, our fans in New Zealand, Korea, Hong Kong, Mexico, Singapore, and Taiwan are soon to experience the joy that is Xbox!

Back at the Oddworld Studio, the Inhabitants just partook of the first ever Oddworld Inhabitants Company Picnic. The Frisbees were flying, the Oddlings were bouncing, and the Inhabitants were cavorting like a herd of wild beasts! Oh yes, my fans, they know how to party, and party they did.

If you happen to be a member of the tiny group whose email failed on the last spam, Ifve got super news; you can still visit the top secret, members only (no you don't need a special jacket to view the page) web page where amazing fruit filled Oddworld secrets* are revealed: ...."

thanx atusiya@ for this text.
