I love the belching fleeches! I laugh evry time I get eaten by one!

For me, AO's one real flaw was the way you were forced to play parts that you had completely mastered over and over and over to get to some jump with a scrab hot on your heels maybe a minute down the road from the point you had to restart after dying. As much as I loved AO, it's difficult to imagine how much better my perception of it might have been if some of the play wasn't so darn frustrating. Don't get me wrong, AO is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played, and turned me into an Oddworld fan, but there were times I wanted to hunt down whoever decided on fixed save points and wring his or her neck. AE has its challenging parts, too, but being able to focus in on the tough parts without replaying parts you've mastered is a big positive. On the other hand, even apart from Quiksave, my vague sense is that the puzzles in AO were a bit more challenging and gave one a bigger sense of accomplishment.

Hmmm... now this is someone I can agree with! ^_^

I never said that AE sucked, GD, just that it was nowhere near as good as the original. I would also disagree when you say that AE was funnier and more complex [I think that AO was both funnier and more complex], and I fail to see why being easier is a good thing...

It isnt always good for a game to be very easy. However it IS bad for a game to be TOO hard. (Im not saying that AO is in particular, its just a thought...)

I like challenging games ; not short ; LONG and i mean LONG games ; and not easy but hard ; not too hard ; just perfect ; Games that Take FOREVER to beat

Yeah, same here. I hate games that are too easy, but I also hate games that are too hard. They have to be just right :D. I guess I could always get a strategy guide for harder games, but it's a pain in the neck to look from the book to the TV every five seconds.

I strongly agree with Rettick here. The spirituality and the dark atmosphere of AO surpassed AEs corny humor by a long way. I liked the gameplay of AE, and most of the storyline, but it just didn't compare to AO.

And Abe's voice was TERRIBLE in AE! I never got used to that. :(

Regarding Abe's Exoddus' apparent slapstick humour, I think there might be a cultural difference between European/Australian and American appreciation.

I find that English and Australian people have a sense of humour that is quite different to that of Americans. Just take a look at Seinfeld and compare it to a British comedy such as Monty Python or Faulty Towers. I'll admit that the humour in Abe's Exoddus coaxed no laughs from me, but I put it down to American humour. "The Americans probably thought it was funny," I thought to myself. And that's the main thing.

Err hmmm... I didnt really think AE was all that funny. I found the fleeches amusing, but that's probably just me. And besides, AE had it's dark moments. I almost jumped in my seat the first time that the blind mud turned around in the opening.

And another thing! Fart humor and slapstick was quite frequent in Monty Python. In fact it was in every single opening. And if your comparing Seinfeld to AE, Syd, I cant quite see this similarity in humor that your talking about.

I can see it now...
In the future, you get a job as a game reviewer for a big magazine like gamepro...and then the sequel to the biggest game comes out. you gave the first one a 10.0 hands down because it was the best game ever. And then, the sequel comes out. You give it a 3.2, only because the characters had extra fingers and different shaped eyes.

duhreetoh 12-12-2001 08:57 PM

Also, am I the only one who has noticed ABSOLUTELY NO CHANGE in Abe's voice?

Doug 12-13-2001 12:41 AM

You didn't notice any difference? If so, you are in the vast minority if not the only one. I had heard that Abe's voice was different in the two games before I played AE, but I was still quite shocked at the difference. The only thing he says the same that I can tell is "wait."

There's actually a whole separate topic on the difference in Abe's voice in the two games. Check back a page or two.

Edit: Found it - check here: Abe's voice topic I didn't realize that this topic started back in July, but someone responded to it recently and it got resurrected for a bit.

Dureetoh: Maybe if the Sequel you are talking about chooses quantity over quality, then maybe I would give it 3.2. I have personally made no reference to his fingers or voice. I really couldn't care less about cosmetic differences, it's Gameplay, Plot, and Atmosphere that matter to me.

duhreetoh 12-13-2001 07:21 PM

I was referring to abe333.

Danny 12-13-2001 07:34 PM

Ok, sorry. It wasn't clear, so I thought I'd better defend the anti-AE point of view... :D

General Drippik 12-14-2001 04:42 AM

Nuh, I don't really care about voice or fingers either.
