So which word would you use, I'm curious?

OddCloud, a buzzword of Oddventure.

Your taunts won't hurry them up, Nate.

'working remotely'.

So all our images, databases, assets etc, where are they stored? I get that 'cloud' is a buzzword, but it's an appropriate one, and people know what it means.

Varrok 06-24-2018 06:53 AM

In all seriousness, I'm with Alex on this one. He just mentioned working in cloud like the normal thing it is nowadays, without going on about how innovative and original this is. You got the wrong impression.

Samtastic 06-24-2018 07:58 AM

Well - I listened to an interview on YouTube yesterday from some Oddworld guys and they said that Soulstorm is now due in 2019. So probably next year we will see more of Soulstorm.

For everyone's sake I hope they're stored on your own private servers in a data center somewhere and not on some Google Drive or equivalent privacy disaster.

in all complete honest seriousnesses, i'm with your mother on this one. sorry.

Varrok 06-24-2018 10:51 AM

To be truly frank, ^ I'm with stupid.

Could we please try staying vaguely on topic?

I agree that hearing Lorne saying the word "cloud" did carry some of the negative connotations associated with the overuse of the word for myself, but there's really no better way to describe it. Plus, these kind of events are mostly for industry professionals and that term clearly still gets aged bigwigs and investors riled up. We just have the luxury of peeking behind that curtain.

Don't worry. We're in good hands.

I'd make a quip about being so starved for content that we're arguing about the use of a buzzword—from the guy behind OddMob—but that would be redundant at this point.

STM 06-25-2018 02:53 AM

Tfw the news on ur favourite game series is so dry you gotta analyse the use of the word cloud for almost an entire forum page without any irony.

Fuck I love this place.

Are you saying that storing data online is unusual for game developers? I'm genuinely curious as I don't know much about the game industry's processes.

(... speaking as someone who spent the entire day week trying to get data to go from a database to a data store and then into my application.)

Auriel 06-26-2018 07:03 AM

im shocked there hasn't been a single FF7 pun throughout this whole "discussion"

He means something that's the complete opposite of this. He means that it's normal, and the word "cloud" is now normal.

If it was normal, why would Lorne need to call attention to it?

It'd be like saying 'We're making video games on computers now'. If it's normal, that is.

He didn't. That's your impression. He barely mentioned it. Just like he mentioned that he's got many books. I'm pretty sure books aren't a new concept, either.

He's calling attention to the fact that the games' designs are inspired by a wide range of real world topics. That is significant and worth mentioning.

Varrok 06-26-2018 10:43 PM

To me it's like stating the fact that they are working in cloud.

Imagine a different scenario: Lorne gathered them all in one place, and the team was shown briefly in the video with him saying:
:

"[...] and now we're working on soon to be released Oddworld Soulstorm, and we're building it in our office in California [camera shot changes]"
Now I don't think you'd feel in any way alarmed by this sentence and go "why did he mention offices, like it's a new thing?".

I think you started watching the video with the presumption that everyone using the word "cloud" must obviously be marketing it as the new big thing. That's not what I heard in the video.

Yeah, it was very much in passing. I assure you, Nate, Lorne's very aware of the processes involved in distributed development, and I do think you're making too much out of this. :)

STM 06-27-2018 03:58 AM

Nate being anal about specifics? Surely not?!

Unless this is all part of the ARG..

Quick, some one check the reflections in Lornes eyes, I just keep getting lost in them.

Not really. I was objecting to the word 'cloud' because it's an overused buzzword that should be avoided at all costs even if it's meant in the most genuine way. After that the conversation went somewhat deeper than I expected, as people argued about how to interpret Lorne's use of the word and it went a bit point-counterpointy.

Imagine what my family has to deal with.

Now imagine what guests have to deal with, given most of my family is just like me.

What was the point of the video exactly? Was it showcased to the public, or was it intended for the business side of the industry? I have no veritable knowledge about the event itself.

It's just a word. The informal connotations don't really matter. It quickly explains the process.
