to be completely frank (no my name is not Frank), it isn't really a 'scummy' thing to do, or at least not to my definition. taking from an orphanage's fix-the-roof charity fund is scummy. punching a crippled world war veteran in the face is scummy. my poorly-made point is that there are much worse crimes committed digitally. doesn't excuse piracy from being a crime, but it definitely does make it one of the very 'lesser' crimes. it's fucking digital pirating at the end of the day, online bullshit, absolutely anyone can do it, anywhere, anytime, and very quickly and easily at that. all you need is some form of internet connection.

yet again, that isn't meant as an excuse, it's meant as an indicator to how small a problem (or big, depending on your outlook) it is when looking at the big picture. it's very common, and to be honest, at this stage, no one with any power over that area really gives a shit about it right now. they're off chasing possible terrorist organisations and threats to government. copyright and piracy kind of take a back seat, and go to lesser powers to deal with.

some people who admit to doing this shit are hypocrites because they will either say "i don't pirate, apart from blah blah blah or that one time etc" or "i pirate but it's not stealing lol" or "i pirate but also spend all my money on their fucking merch" or some other variation. not all of those people, but some. what i say is "i pirate shit, because i don't give a fucking shit. i am poor. does that excuse my conduct? no it does not, i never said it did. all i ever said is i don't give a fucking shit, so leave me alone."

so if that makes me a thief then hell, i'm a thief. fucking sue me (lolololol b careful wat u wish 4). on a completely unrelated note if anyone wishes to browse my wares they need only ask, i'd be happy to oblige and be a middle man for all your piracy and swashbuckling needs ARRRRRRRR ME HEARTIES

At least you're honest about it. It's not as if I don't occasionally do something unethical. The only thing about these situations that pisses me off is when the person stealing it refuses to accept that what they are doing is even mildly unethical, and starts giving bullshit reasons why they shouldn't have to pay. It just irritates me to watch people lie to themselves.

You know what I really fucking want to get my hands on, Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life. I played the demo of that game and I've been looking to try and pirate it ever since but I can't find a site that even bloody sells it anywhere! The reason why I don't pirate anything any more is because I'm too thick to work out how to.

Tangentially related to that: There's an anime series airing this season (Space Dandy) which airs on Toonami dubbed before it airs in Japan. Leaks of the dub have been posted on the main torrent site I use which have garnered some very... strange comments.

Illegal leak. Why is this allowed? The real episode hasn't even aired in the first place and this should be illegal under any means.

I wonder what the actual companies think about this when they find out. Please don't let Nyaa become a bad reputation for leaking episodes before they air.

Not as much fun as Conway's Game of Life!

It was fun for a while, but the mechanics are so simple it's difficult to really play around with very much. I really love the idea of seeing a little thing like that move without outside help. I used to be obsessed with this kind of stuff, until I gave up after a month or two of constant searching for something complex.

I saw the first ten minutes of the un-dubbed, un-subbed, first episode of that. I had no idea what I was watching but I appreciated all the boobs. I thought though, that Toonami was a kids channel? Seemed that Space Dandy would be reallllllly unsuited to a kids channel.

I don't think accepting something is unethical and believing it to be socially acceptable are mutually exclusive, though. I don't think I'm deluded for thinking I'm less of a douchebag than someone doing the same thing in a different context.

Are there layers to it? Sure. You could be doing much worse things, yes. At the end of the day, you are taking something you should be paying for simply because you want to. Which isn't the coolest thing you could do.

I think this should be something that people who do it don't really talk about. I don't really care that much about it. I will not crusade against it. But holy fuck do I hate watching people defend it.

I'm not defending it. I know it's wrong, but there are defintely circumstances where it is less wrong than it is other times.

Why even bother saying that though? Less wrong? What does that mean? I just want the people that do it to shut up about it. I don't care what you do. Just the fact that they talk about it proves that they feel like they need to explain their actions, which should be proof enough that they really shouldn't be doing it. Keep it private. Don't make excuses.

I did consider that. I didn't come up with an answer to whether that changes if I find it annoying. It might. I'll have to get back to you on it.
