Please say that you will make future games for PS3 aswell as PS4, i don't want to waste my money on a console that cant read previous generations like the PS3. It seems we are no longer progressing through technology..

No Hand of Odd? That's a bit crappy. So much for working with social media. You see this is the problem with Oddworld, too many empty promises. Just tell us the truth dammit!

They do tell the truth, but they tell the truth too early and then something gets in their way down the line. You can't expect every announced project to be completed, as nice as it would be.

I'm not too sure on the ins and outs of the tech, but would the cell processors in the PS3 be the reason? The PS3 was ridiculously complicated, whereas PS4 is going with optimised off-the-shelf components to be as simple as possible for developers. Maybe PS3 games require this different kind of processing, that the PS4 isn't capable of?

That said, they mentioned being able to download the games, so I doubt they would re-work the whole PS3 library to run on PS4 if the processor was the issue. It could be just an excuse to get you to buy all your games again on the new platform.

On backwards compatibility for the PS3, I have the PS3 Slim and it does play PS1 disks, don't think I've tried any PS2s yet. I didn't think it would after Sony said they'd removed the function, but hey I'm not complaining!

Nate 02-22-2013 03:56 AM

Sony has said that some (but only some!) PS3 games will be ported to the PS4. The main factor deciding which one will be whether they maxed out the hardware, as that'll make it more difficult to emulate.

The PS3s that could play PS2 games had a lot of compatibility issues with the PS2 games anyways. It was much less trouble to just play the games on the damn consoles they were released on. I've never had an issue with PSX game compatibility on the PS3, though. I had to calibrate the controller for a few of them, but other than that it was all good.

Scrabaniac 02-22-2013 04:34 AM

Im sticking to my trusty ps3... Anyway if companies started releasing games only for ps4 they would be a bit retarded, as the ps4 will be pretty much unaffordable for at least 3 years, hence more people will own a ps3 than a ps4..

Slog Bait 02-22-2013 04:42 AM

The PS3 is probably going to do the same thing the PS2 did. It's going to continue to be produced for many years to come and games will still come out on it for some time. Eventually the PS4 will kick off, but people will still be buying new PS3s up until they stop making them.

Doubt it. PS3 is nowhere near as popular as PS2 was.

Slog Bait 02-22-2013 09:49 AM

It wouldn't be a very smart business move for them to drop the PS3 shortly after the PS4s release. I doubt it would be around for as long as the PS2 was, but the PS3s lifespan is far from over.

OANST 02-22-2013 10:39 AM

It will get supported about as much as the GameCube did after Wii release. It will exist but next to no one will care.

Slog Bait 02-22-2013 11:26 AM

Well yeah. That's how most console releases work. The PS4 is bound to be stupidly expensive upon release like the PS3 was, and since it's a new console that will only have a handful of games out for some time more people would probably drop the money on the previous gen console still in production with a much wider selection of games. It's going to be awhile before people start transitioning over to the PS4.

STM 02-22-2013 11:29 AM

It depends, the PS4 will probably be as expensive as the PS3 was but I can't imagine they'd make it cost much more unless they are reducing production of initial units even more than they did back in 2007.

Slog Bait 02-22-2013 11:33 AM

Hey, you should totally check out my post in the PS4 thread in Non-Oddworld Gaming.

Also the PS3 was stupidly expensive and didn't it cost more to make it than they were selling it for as it was or something so they were losing money and it took them forever that to stop being a thing

STM 02-22-2013 11:40 AM

Yeah, but I think that's true of a lot of consoles, they lose money selling the console but then make it all back again with the games. Don't quote me though because I have no idea where I remember that potential factoid from.

Slog Bait 02-22-2013 11:50 AM

Well it makes sense. I just remember Sony getting hit particularly hard with the PS3. At least, hard enough for them to make some what of a fuss about it.

Nepsotic 02-22-2013 11:54 AM

Yeah, they lost a tonne of money due to how expensive the PS3 was to make. They made it back shortly afterwards, though.

Nate 02-22-2013 03:20 PM

Let's keep this thread to discussion specifically about JAW/Oddworld on the PS4 and leave the general console discussion to the thread in NOG.

They have never made it back, the PS3 lost more money than the PS1 and PS2 created combined.

JAW confirmed that the new games they are working on are multiplatform, so don't worry there.

Nepsotic 02-23-2013 11:47 PM

Really? They never made it back? Shit

Nate 02-24-2013 12:52 AM

The PS3 has been profitable since late 2008. Whether it's been profitable enough to cover the costs of R&D and the first two years of its lifecycle, I don't know. But given it's been more than four years since then, I'd suggest it's likely.

Daxter King 02-24-2013 02:57 PM

No.

I'm hoping JAW, if developing for the PS4, is also looking to develop for the new Xbox (when it gets announced).

Manco 02-25-2013 09:18 AM

That likely depends on if Microsoft alters their certification process for the new Xbox.

Queen Skillya 02-25-2013 10:48 AM

I'd have a major geekgasm if an Oddworld game came to the PS4

OANST 02-25-2013 11:11 AM

Ummmm....why?

Michael 02-25-2013 11:37 AM

Thought you guys might like this if you haven't already seen it- Stew Gilray speaking about the PS4 to IGN:

:

'We are incredibly proud to be working on PS4. Sony's passion and insight into connectivity and instant-access gaming is incredibly refreshing and encouraging to us as a developers. It allows us the ability to create immersive titles that truly engage the player at all opportunities.

PS4 is a dream. It's as they said: incredibly easy to develop for and extremely powerful. Having 8GB of DDR5 ram is staggering, as the speed that the data can be shifted around outstrips that 8GB. However, as a smallish indie, to us it's not about what we can do, it's about what we can do well. 1080p, 60fps, 3D is where it's at, and so far we're blown away by what we've managed to achieve with the hardware. Currently our imaginations are running away with themselves.'

The first paragraph was dictated by Lorne.

JAW's issues with the certification process were due to the fact that SWHD was not a new game. For Abe HD, there'd be a whole seperate set of issues with the certification process that they'd need to deal with.

That doesn’t really invalidate my point.

Don’t forget that other indie developers have also had bad experiences with Microsoft – Jonathan Blow and Phil Fish, for example. I imagine JAW will be very unenthusiastic with publishing on Xbox unless Microsoft goes out of its way to woo developers.
