i wouldn't start with the first generation, as great as they are to play still (mostly for those who played them as kids, but that's due to a massive nostalgia filter), it is pretty flawed and might put you off the rest
i'd probably say the same about the second, which imo was better but still pretty flawed. i reckon you'd be better off starting with emerald/fire red/leaf green in gen 3 cause it's compatible with the newer games and are more similar to gen 4 and 5 than the first two. |
In summary, start with any games you want except D/P. BW2 or Coliseum.
|
I think if you ever played Red/Blue or Gold/Silver start with the remake of that. I only played Silver and Crystal and SoulSilver just clicked with me when I finally played it.
If you’ve never played any Pokemon game before then I don’t even know why you’d bother starting now. |
I need something to casually work at now that school's back and I've almost finished Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix 100%. Pokemon seems to fit the bill.
I'll probably check out either HG/SS or Emerald. I'll hopefully still recognise most of the pokemon in either of those. Thanks, guys. |
Ninfia's English name confirmed for Sylveon, if anyone cares. Also, the typing still hasn't been revealed. Do you guys think they're going to introduce an 18th type?
|
Magical girl type?
|
A Magic type would sort of make sense, but I doubt they'd add it in this late in the game.
|
Well, the entire point of adding new shit is to keep competitive fresh and the games interesting even if it's the same general formula over and over. The introduction of a new type will force people to adapt their strategy, especially this late in the game.
|
I suppose it would give Psychic and Dark something to do except annoy each other.
|
Based on appearance, none of the eeveelutions really stand out to me. Unless they were made to look like this:
http://th07.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/...is-d5mzfqy.jpg For my money, I'm still waiting on the bug type. Or the poison type. |
Ninfia's english name is Sylveon! And I thiiiiiiink it's a flying type because
http://media.tumblr.com/b761c0fa00ab...lvJ1qeglgq.jpg Leafeon super effective to Vaporeon Umbreon super effective to Espeon Flareon super effective to Glaceon SO THEREFORE Jolteon super effective to Sylveon |

I would recommend Black/White 1/2, since those games are of very high quality and give the player a lot of control and help. There are also thousands of people who can help you on gamefaqs and other sites.

It's clearly blowing around. Like, y'know, IN THE WIND.
|
It does actually look like a Flying type now that you mention it. Now all we need is are Dragon and Ghost type Eeveelutions.
|
And Poison, and Ground, and Rock etc.
|
Those to. I was thinking of the remaining types of the top of my head. :)
|
And Bug, and Fighting, and Steel.
Since we normally get 2 Eveelutions per generation, we'll be waiting a while. Also, a question. Is there actually any "proper" time to swap out a Pokemon in my team for a new one? I know some species have higher base stats, but due to value randomisation and the differing moves that they can learn, it doesn't seem a reliable yardstick to go by. I guess I'm supposed to just take ones I think look cool, raise them regardless of ability, and learn valuable lessons about friendship. And then lose because my team is all Bug Pokemon. |
You can switch out whenever just be aware you're going to have to level grind until your thumbs fall off.
If you're playing casual, whatever your team ends up being doesn't matter. If you're playing competitive though, or trying to get through shit like the battle frontier, you'll need to actually think about what kind of build your team has. |

Lopunny will forever make me uncomfortable
why would you base a pokemon off of a playboy bunny |
everyone post their fantasy team, regardless of competitive feasibility

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Disclaimer: I’m not a strategist at all. |
My team is roughly based on my original one from Gold.

Didn't go for an all-fossil team, then.
EDIT: Also, taking into account the (admittedly minor) improvements made since, why are HG/SS still the best? |
Probably because HG/SS took all the gameplay improvements from previous generations then applied them to one of the most fondly remembered “classic” generations.
You get quality gameplay plus nostalgia and familiarity. e: Great, now I’m getting the itch to play Pokemon again. Is there an easy way to transfer Pokemans from HG/SS to B/W? |
