I'm with BM. The average young, Western person, male or female, doesn't really worry about these things. Not actively trying to move women up in the world, but not resisting it either. If there's no-one deliberately trying to keep women "in their place", then over time things will become neutral. Misogyny will just become an immaterial myth held only by inbred morons and the extremely backward. See: Racism. We're not there yet, but we're getting there.

"Feminism" as an organised political movement is only really necessary in countries where there's an organised misogynist political movement to counter. So in the Arab world, there's certainly a need for rousing, vocal, feminists. Here, you'll just look like you're making a disproportionate amount of fuss over the issue concerned.

Bullet Magnet 01-10-2013 10:12 AM

I disagree, there is still a need for it here. Women's issues are just a lot more invisible here, which is part of the problem.

OANST 01-10-2013 10:22 AM

Listen, bitches.

Listen.

hedjeroo 01-10-2013 11:04 AM

OANST has offended me horribly because "bitches" is a very offensive misogynistic term.

In seriousness though, some people who fly the flag of feminism, just like some people who fly the flag of anti-racism, don't actually know what the banner they're forming under means. (I'm looking at you, people who think religions are races.)

I prefer to keep things more clear and say I'm in support of equality. We don't seem to have confused that one yet. At least, not that I've heard of.

And on a vaguely related note, I've seen a "masculist" movement being spoken about before - which suffers the exact same problems of modern-day feminism. "No, no, we're nothing like that misandric evil feminism," they say. Hahah.

I have a friend who refers to herself as a “humanist” and does this because she thinks feminists are wrong.

It’s infuriating because she made a Youtube video about her opinions on feminism and they are all so ill-informed.

STM 01-10-2013 11:14 AM

humanist or Humanist?

That's not me being sarky by the way, I'm genuinely interested.

Manco 01-10-2013 11:16 AM

I don’t goddamn know, I haven’t seen her write it down.

STM 01-10-2013 11:21 AM

Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me.

hedjeroo 01-10-2013 11:29 AM

I want to see this YouTube video.

Also that's another word gone. I don't think humanist means what she thinks it means. At least, Google has suggested several alternatives that have confused the matter and would require me to research further.

I've never met a feminist who wanted pure equality and nothing else, unfortunately.

That's because they're dumb women amirite?

Varrok 01-10-2013 02:28 PM

Dumb women? It's like saying 'buttery butter'
Anybody top this, plz

Bullet Magnet 01-10-2013 02:38 PM

I don't know how gender equality is going over where all you guys are at but let me tell you, moving from a pretty liberal state to a really fucking conservative state in the U.S. a year or so ago has definitely convinced me that feminism is still completely necessary in the western world. Or, at least, the States. What else is new, though?

It kind of sickens me to actually see this level of sexism first hand. I can't even listen to the god damn radio or watch the news for an hour or so without hearing at least one thing that implies women are inferior in some way or another.

T-nex 01-13-2013 09:12 AM

I just hate the "make me a sandwich" or "you belong to the kitchen" jokes... They are tiring. More than anything I hate when other girls defend these jokes just to seem like the cool one-of-the-guys type of girl. To me these jokes translate to nothing else than: You are worth nothing, girl. It irks me. x__x

Vyrien 01-13-2013 09:20 AM

I'm indifferent to them, the people who use them generally have no wit at all so it's interesting watching them make themselves look backwards and unoriginal in order to appear funny.

MeechMunchie 01-13-2013 10:49 AM

I reserve the right to say those things ironically.

Wings of Fire 01-13-2013 11:01 AM

I reserve the right to say your mom ironically.

MeechMunchie 01-13-2013 11:46 AM

I shudder to think of the kind of person who says it without irony.

Don't you see if I make those jokes, I can show to everyone how manly I am? If I make those jokes, all them girls will like mah virility and lay down on my feet for more of that. Or so a significant percentage of men think.

I don't like explaining the joke, but I didn't use inverted commas.

I hope you don’t sincerely believe that’s what feminism is about.

“Ohmigosh those wimmenfolk want to rule the world!”

hedjeroo 01-14-2013 12:49 PM

Makes all us would-be female dictators look bad.
Fuck your equality, fuck your feminism, I and I alone wish for special snowflake treatment.

I really hope that image is a joke though. I really do. Not even just your posting of it, but the idea that the person holding that sign believes that.

Bullet Magnet 01-14-2013 02:27 PM

We don't actually know the context.

MeechMunchie 01-14-2013 03:03 PM

By the hipster glasses, I'd say she's saying it ironically.

Vyrien 01-14-2013 03:06 PM

Is that a CCTV camera on the back of her door?

Slog Bait 01-14-2013 03:13 PM

Looks like some kind of prize ribbon to me.
