I really can't see the appeal of Halo, I've tried it and all, but it just didn't click.

I think the appeal is that it’s basically a space opera with (mostly) intelligent and varied enemies in some pretty and interesting environments.

Dixanadu 11-10-2012 06:01 AM

Halo 4's campaign wasn't my favourite.

The multiplayer more than makes up for it, though.

I did like the environments, but I got bored really quick. Maybe it's because I never cared much for FPS's, with a few exceptions.

If you never cared much for FPSes, have you considered that perhaps your opinion doesn't count for much in this thread?

I say this as someone who doesn't care much for FPSes and thus hasn't posted what he thinks of Halo.

Manco 11-10-2012 04:26 PM

nate what are your thoughts on halo

I dunno about that. I reckon someone who has played Half Life casually has just as much right to criticize Halo as someone who has played every single FPS ever.

Although I'm not into FPSes, I really like Mirrors Edge, both Portal games, Bioshock, Dishonored and Quake 3 with friends. They're among my favourite games, but I can't still like Halo. I say this not because I want to make fun or trash-talk about Halo or anything. It's more like how I was disappointed when I played it. Everybody was saying, "it was one of the best games ever" and yet, it did nothing for me.

Wings of Fire 11-10-2012 05:37 PM

Mirrors Edge, Portal and Bioshock are far too different to compare.

Manco 11-10-2012 05:42 PM

All of those games are too different to compare, even with Halo.

Wings of Fire 11-10-2012 05:47 PM

I dunno about Quake 3. I mean, it's the standard I judge pretty much every FPS I play by.

The only one that came close was Unreal Tournament.

STM 11-10-2012 05:57 PM

E: Nevermind.

Yeah, I know what you mean, and must be because of the different gameplay and "gimmicks" that I prefer those instead of Halo, although Halo seems to be a more refined Quake than anything, as far my experience goes. I dunno...I just felt disappointed when I played Halo.

Yeah but in this case Steamer was specifically talking about the multiplayer aspect, whereas the Halo series has a rather large campaign to it.

e: although to be fair I have no idea what Quake’s campaign is like.

Quake 2 had a great campaign. Quake 3 was basically multiplayer with quirky bots. Fun in its own way, but... yeah.

Quake 3 campaign was really...bland.

EDIT: Well, shit. Basically what WOF said.

Vyrien 11-10-2012 06:27 PM

I remember Quake 3 as a wonderful game to play multiplayer, the campaign was not memorable in the slightest but then, I may be seeing things through nostalgia glasses.

Haven't played Halo 4 yet. I am a little bit cautious simply because I thought Halo 3 was supposed to conclude the series and Bungie aren't developing. The first posts have restored a little of my confidence in it however.

If it's a detailed explanation of what he liked and what he didn't, sure. But simply saying that it didn't click is meaningless, given that that would be true of many FPSes for him.

You shouldn't worry about the developers, as if I'm understanding correctly 343 is basically made of Bungie alumni.

Manco 11-11-2012 03:39 AM

All the reviews I’ve read also say either they get Halo better than Bungie or are at least competent enough to make a game as well as Bungie.

So, either way that’s reassuring.

e: What the hell are Bungie doing with themselves nowadays anyway?

Vyrien 11-11-2012 04:10 AM

From the looks of it they are developing for tablets and smartphones now.

Strike Witch 11-11-2012 04:16 AM

What happened was Microsoft wanted to keep Halo going, and a part of Bungie wanted to stay with the project and the rest were over it. So the ones who were done with the whole thing are Bungie, and the ones who continue to make Halo for Microsoft are 343.

Also, a bunch of staff from Retro Studios (Metroid Prime) helped out with Halo 4, which explains a few stylistic and level design elements.

Sounds like Seinfeld is unfunny. What it did has become the fundamental necessities of most FPSs that came after, which then put in additional gimmicks.

Crashpunk 11-11-2012 05:05 AM

Knowing that Retro Studios helped with Halo 4 makes me wanna play it even more. Metroid Prime is amazing.

That’s a little depressing, really.

STM 11-11-2012 11:04 AM

Didn't Giger help with level design on H4? I remember hearing that somewhere, where I heard it I forget though.

I know, right? They went from making one of the most popular video games in history to funding independent developers for mobile platforms. Not what i would call moving on the next big thing.

On Halo 4... The game is alright. There are alot of design choices that ruin the game for me, such as the new alien appearances and MC's armor and a few others. There are also some sound issues during cut scenes which are killing the mood as well. Game play is pretty much the same as it has always been, not that i was expecting a whole lot of new features.

Haven't tried multiplayer yet. I'll give that a go after i beat the campaign.

Bullet Magnet 11-15-2012 12:59 PM

My main problem is with how rapidly weapons disappear when you drop them.

Dixanadu 11-15-2012 02:30 PM

The map Complex is bugged to shit.

People are glitching into walls and hiding there, frustrating as hell during Flood games.

Very few people from Bungie are at 343, those few make up an even fewer percentage of what 343 is.

I loved Halo 4, probably not as much as 3, but it's still much better than Reach.

Campaign wise:

Halo 3>Halo ODST>Halo 4>Halo 1>Halo 2>Call of Duty 4>>>>>>Halo:Reach

Multiplayer:

Halo 3>Halo 2>Halo 4>Halo 1>That Minecraft Halo clone on Xbox Indies>Reach

As you can see, Reach is terrible.

Dixanadu 11-15-2012 04:13 PM

Reach was pretty sucky. The campaign wasn't that replayable, the multiplayer didn't capture me like Halo 2/3 did and Firefight wasn't as near enough entertaining as it was in ODST.

I've put my Halo 4 Legendary run on hold, as Promethean Knights and their little faggot Watchers rape the shit out of me. What happened to the good old days when a good old stick or a supercombine saved the day?
