If they were solid ice, they would wobble, crack, sunder and crash into Saturn. But the rings are almost nothing at all. You could fly through them and not encounter a single fragment of dust.

MeechMunchie 07-17-2012 02:35 PM

But they look solid so they must be solid

They're handles, I say, handles

LaLaLa I can't heeaar you

Manco 07-17-2012 02:37 PM

The rings are a metaphor for our fragmented and immaterial existence.

Also your sex life.

Bullet Magnet 07-17-2012 03:08 PM

The can't be, the rings exist.

Nepsotic 07-18-2012 07:48 AM

They are there, we see them because of how dense the fragments are, but they're extremely small, and there's millions of them.

Hah.

Nepsotic 07-18-2012 11:30 AM

Aren't we making the same point? I was saying they're really, really, really, really small, wasn't that what BM was saying? If he meant they were literally nothing, then it would be impossible to see them, and you can see them, so they're small, densely packed particles. Like dust in sunbeams.

Right?

Bullet Magnet 07-18-2012 11:43 AM

My point was that they aren't densely packed at all.

Mr. Bungle 07-18-2012 11:56 AM

If they're almost nothing at all, what makes them visible to us?

STM 07-18-2012 11:58 AM

How comes we do seem them then? Generally intrigued here.

Because light reflects off 3*(10^19)kg of assorted shit orbiting around Saturn and those rings are REALLY FUCKING BIG.

Scraby 07-18-2012 12:14 PM

Saturns rings consist out of billions of fragments from a crushed moon, some as small as ice cubes, some as large as houses, and some are just f*king BIG.

Manco 07-18-2012 12:17 PM

And yet none can quite match the size of STM’s ego.

STM 07-18-2012 12:23 PM

...that seemed somewhat uncalled for.

Manco 07-18-2012 12:37 PM

I agonised over whose name to put there. In the end it was an arbitrary choice.

What I’m saying is that everyone has a huge ego.

Varrok 07-18-2012 12:43 PM

I don't have a huge ego. That's how modest and better person I am.

See, we were all wrong!

MeechMunchie 07-18-2012 03:03 PM

Could've been a comet trail or summat.

Pweety. What are all the lights east of Scotland, though? Oil rigs?

Manco 07-18-2012 03:30 PM

Probably heathen bonfires or some shit.

So, it's Shaman's doing?

Nepsotic 07-19-2012 07:38 AM

That would explain why he hasn't visited for some time.

OANST 07-19-2012 10:09 AM

Is this about philosophy still?

Wings of Fire 07-19-2012 10:53 AM

Was it ever?

OANST 07-19-2012 10:54 AM

I honestly don't know.

MeechMunchie 07-19-2012 11:04 AM

Can a thread created for philosophical discussion still be considered a "philosophy thread" if nobody asks any searching questions?

OANST 07-19-2012 11:35 AM

Well, it's a philosophy thread now.

Not even then, if any of them get answered.
