Sorry Nate. I was pretty much meaning to say that the stars of them shows were hilarious.

Steamer_KING 05-28-2012 07:15 AM

I'm very neutral about Ricky Gervais. Extras and The Office didn't do much for me, but The Ricky Gervais Show, An Idiot Abroad and Life's Too Short a good shows, not excellent, but good. I do prefer Steve Merchant. Even though both of them wrote the shows.

About comedians in general, my favourite ones are Don Rickles, Conan O'Brien, Louis C.K., Dean Martins, Jerry Lewis, Hugh Laurie, Jim Carrey, Rowan Atkinson, Raul Solnado, Stephen Fry and some other Portuguese comedians and that's pretty much it.

Sorry Nate. I was pretty much meaning to say that the stars of them shows were hilarious.

But they're only funny because they're given good lines by the writer(s).

I can see where you're coming from here and I partially agree, but the way the actors deliver the lines and act in the scenes is also important.

Nepsotic 05-28-2012 08:38 AM

I love the Ricky Gervais show so much, but it gets a little boring for me as I've listened to the podcasts and radio sh tows over and over, still always makes me laugh though. Karl Pilkington is a moron and a genius at the same time.

They were the writers.
At least in the case of The Young Ones and Bottom.

Crashpunk 05-28-2012 09:12 AM

Didn't the stars of Black Adder also wrote most of the lines?

Rowan Atkinson did, but I think it was the first two seasons. Or just the first, can't remember though.

The first season was shit though.

OddjobAbe 05-28-2012 11:53 AM

Actually, the first season was my favourite. I liked the Blackadder character more in that, because he was much more of a snivelling little cretin.

Crashpunk 05-28-2012 12:06 PM

What! First season was great. I especially like the first episode.

Anyway, we're getting off-topic.

Mr. Bungle 05-28-2012 01:37 PM

I love David Cross. He might be my favourite comedian.

scrabface 05-28-2012 02:21 PM

Mr Bungle

are you Canadians worshiping Jim Carrey?

T

Bullet Magnet 05-28-2012 04:43 PM

I went off Jim Carrey about the same time he went off vaccination.

One of the Young Ones was one of the several writers.

Rowan Atkinson wrote the first series with Richard Curtis. Then from the second onwards it was Curtis and Ben Elton.

Yes, I really am pedantic enough to have gone to Wikipedia to find out the details.

enchilado 05-28-2012 05:08 PM

Indeed yes. That's why the first series was so much worse than the rest.

Steamer_KING 05-28-2012 07:05 PM

I just remembered something. Does anybody remembers "'Allo 'Allo!"?

Wings of Fire 05-28-2012 07:14 PM

I remember that it was a comedy show and not a comedian.

Mac Sirloin 05-28-2012 07:16 PM

Can't say I do, but I think everybody remembers Hitler retiring as a bartender.

Hands down he's in my top 3, I'm not sure if I like him or Bob Odenkirk more. On the one hand, Bob's had a hand in pretty much everything I've ever found funny, on the other hand, Tobias.

Mr. Bungle 05-28-2012 07:25 PM

I've never actually seen Bob do stand-up, but I love his character acting/writing in Mr. Show, and his pure comedic relief in Breaking Bad.

But overall I think I prefer David Cross a smidgen more, because, as you said, Tobias.

Mr. Bungle 05-28-2012 07:26 PM

Double post, dammit.

Have some old school Eddie Murphy

Fuck he was funny back then.

Sekto Springs 05-28-2012 07:56 PM

Fuck he was funny black then.
Boom. 20% funnier.

MeechMunchie 05-29-2012 04:54 AM

That's horrible. You take that black, Sekto.

Ridg3 05-30-2012 03:14 PM

Dara O'Briain is a pretty funny guy. Ed Byrnes is good as well. The two of them together is sometimes side splitting. Dylan Moran is my favourite though.

Other ones;
Pretty much everyone on the Mock the Week panel. Except a few who are shit.
Lee Evans
Katt Williams
Bill Bailey
Kevin Bloody Wilson.

As long as they're not Stephen Lynch I'll probably find them funny.

MeechMunchie 05-30-2012 03:20 PM

Sean Lock, Ross Noble. And I second Bill Bailey.

Nepsotic 05-30-2012 03:21 PM

Lee Evans and Bill Bailey are not shit! What are you talking about? And since when was Lee Evans on Mock the Week?

EDIT: Oh, I get it. Misread.

Bullet Magnet 05-30-2012 04:00 PM

These guys

Yeah, sorry about that.
I never saw the actors after this show.

I've actually seen him live. Except, and I'm mildly embarrassed to admit it, I had no idea who he was at the time. It was only recently that I happened to see a Youtube video with him doing standup that I realised I was hearing the same material I'd heard back in 2002 and put two and two together.

I dunno if that's a compliment or not...But, was the show good?
