Also lots of folks probably want to show off all the crazy effects their engine can pull, rather than struggle with realistic rendering.

Sekto Springs 05-07-2012 04:34 PM

Hnnnnng.

MeechMunchie 05-08-2012 12:21 AM

Hheeeeeegh

Wil 05-08-2012 02:42 AM

I've drafted a plan for a developer diary about this very issue, but you know these artist types - always too busy arting to write about what they're doing. Some call it talent. I call it laziness.

Xavier 05-08-2012 05:50 AM

Make them do it Wil... no matter how much blood has to be shed.

Sorry...couldn't help my self.

OANST 05-08-2012 03:04 PM

God, where did the Hheeegh originate from? I seem to remember it being either me, and Strike Witch, or Mac, and Strike Witch, but I can't remember from where exactly.

Wil 05-08-2012 03:29 PM

This is not the place to explore that.

MeechMunchie 05-09-2012 12:30 AM

I think it was OANST impersonating Used. It's the noise he makes when watching anime or something.

SpAM_CAN 05-09-2012 01:00 AM

Even when the characters aren't real, we still seem to struggle escaping from that uncanny valley style of rendering (though to be fair, you aren't exactly working with a good game engine on Munch, so its totally understandable :3)

Sekto Springs 05-09-2012 11:15 AM

How exactly does one get the impression of uncanny valley from a completely non-human character?

If I remember correctly, Strike Witch was either trying to mock me or insult me, and I guess she thinks I make that noise.

MeechMunchie 05-09-2012 03:15 PM

It's a legend damned to be lost in the mists of time.

So, how about that Munch HD, eh?

The bathroom.

They don't respect you, Wil.

Also I think that term has become so diluted it's lost all meaning. Like deconstruction.

Strike Witch 05-09-2012 07:54 PM

Yeah, Hheeegh was my creation. Though it really is the noise Sekto makes when masturbates to gay punk porn.

Sekto Springs 05-09-2012 08:05 PM

I suppose you would know, white girl.

Oddworld, while non-human, is meant to be very much alive, and it just looks as though its made of wax. Very much the same as lots of attempts to render humans (I honestly think that Half-Life 2 is one of the few games to get it right, as it was stylized rather than attempting to imitate exactly), but the problem here is that there is no frame of reference. SW got it pretty much right, but most of the talking creatures had beaks, so it is a little easier to do :3

Sekto Springs 05-10-2012 11:15 AM

I know what you're saying, but uncanny valley refers to when something looks a little too realistic, not when it's lacking in realism. Even if the renders in Oddworld were stunningly real, you still wouldn't be in uncanny valley, as they are completely fictional characters that have no real-life counterparts to be compared to.

I would say that in this case, the renders are just lacking in character. Of course, they're still a major improvement over the pale, soulless, wall-eyed models from the original version. Still not as good as the FMV render though.

My least favourite example.

From the same blog:

:

“Uncanny Valley” does not necessarily refer to things that are trying to be realistic, nor does it mean “anything you think is ugly”. Specifically, the term “Uncanny Valley” was meant to refer to robots, saying that people will like things that look like obvious abstractions of people, and people will like things that look exactly like people, but people are repulsed by things that look almost like people but not quite.

It’s important to understand the limits of a style you’ve chose to work in. Realistic designs have to move realistically, stylized cartoons have to move like cartoons. Disney’s Cinderella can’t make the same boisterous exaggerated acting that her stepsisters do because her design is so much more conservative than theirs that it would look absurd and out of place. When cartoony characters move like humans, you get that cheap rotoscope/mo-cap look, but when real people move like cartoons you get the Black Hole Sun music video.

The further removed from reality something is, the harder it is to show subtlety and the bigger it needs to act. However, the more realistic something is supposed to be, the more horrifying it looks when you exaggerate it past normal limits.

I guess the point I'm trying to steal here is that if something makes efforts to seem realistic, even fictitious things, it'll always feel uncomfortable when it breaks away from that. I wouldn't want to see a Slig's spine bent backwards.

However since a) Oddworld, and Munch in particular, is quite cartoony in its proportions and presentation and b) The renders aren't really that much of a departure from the most realistic versions we've seen, it's pretty much moot in this case.

SpAM_CAN 05-11-2012 01:08 PM

Anyway, I just think that it looks a bit flat is all (though at least it'd be more dynamic than the couple of frame animation that was there)

Rayrockslots 05-16-2012 05:26 AM

Please change it back! And could you make him pop out a little door and say "hello" like Abe did in his two games? That always annoyed me when I started playing MO :fuzmad:

Michael 06-06-2012 07:06 PM

Hey! Gametrailers.com has a few videos of Munch HD and SWHD running on the Vita!

Munch videos:

Stranger videos:

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/odd...rs-wrath/13787

Munch is looking good! There's still a 'boing' sound when Abe jumps, but I think it sounds like it's quite a bit deeper than before and less noticeable.

It's a shame there aren't more videos, I thought there would have been more.

In my opinion, from that HD picture Munch's eyes look bad. Like somebody pushed them into head. The hell?

His eyes definitely don’t look so bugged out any more. I personally don’t find it a bad thing, though – he doesn’t look like he’s tripping balls while staring into the abyss any more.

Varrok 06-07-2012 12:56 AM

But... but that was the design. He just fells... less.. Odd.
