I have it on DVD

I just watched some just now.

Nate 11-17-2011 12:06 AM

Then you may continue discussing it in this thread.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 12:34 AM

Summer wars was amazing. made me wish we had that part of the Digimon movie in it's entirety, not in bits...God, why did they have to splice them all together? Summer wars was oddly ghibli esque.

MA 11-17-2011 04:46 AM

fuck sakes, guys. 'riding the cotton pony' is a sarcastic way of saying 'time of the month' or some other shit. i've never even seen goddamn MLP.

now i'm guilty by association you dicks. GAWD.

I really liked Summer Wars, but the director's best movie is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

That was amazing.

I don't think anyone here didn't get that, we just chose to go down a far worse path.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 10:18 AM

That was excellent, beautiful film. Up there with some of Miyazaki's.

Wings of Fire 11-17-2011 10:22 AM

Everything after the grandma died was cheesy as fuck.

It was a beautiful excellent movie but nothing close to Mononoke/Nausicaa/Totoro levels.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 10:26 AM

Hence, some of Miyazaki's. lol Mononoke is his masterpiece in my eyes. That, or Spirited Away, but I'd say Mononoke, even if it is kinda...well, let's face it, a reskin of nausicaa at times.

Wings of Fire 11-17-2011 10:32 AM

Eh, the character that made Nausicaa was Nausicaa.

The characters that made Mononoke were Lady Eboshi and Moro, especially Minnie Driver and Gillian Anderson's performances in the dub.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 10:51 AM

Billy crudup was a great Ashitaka, and Billy bob Thornton's Jigo...wonderful. neil gaiman did a wonderful job on the dub.

Sekto Springs 11-17-2011 11:20 AM

I LOVE Princess Mononoke.
Probably my favorite Miyazaki film actually, and I'm usually lukewarm at best on his work. That movie blew me away.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 11:30 AM

Ashitaka is such a badass, lol.

Mac Sirloin 11-17-2011 12:43 PM

The only other Miyazaki film I'd seen before seeing Mononoke (when I was 9 or 10) was Totoro. I was taken aback, but I love watching them both to this day. I hope Studio Ghibli makes another movie like Castle in The Sky or Mononoke, they sure know how to make a good adventure movie.

Sekto Springs 11-17-2011 01:43 PM

Their last few movies have just felt so hollow to me. Artistically astounding, yes, but their characterization leaves plenty to be desired as of late.

Mononoke was the most recent he did that I loved. His earlier stuff like Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa felt so much richer somehow.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 01:47 PM

I don't know, i thought ponyo was adorable and classic miyazaki. Howl's moving castle is better than most, but easily Miyazaki's worst.

Well Spirited Away was a great, though not spectacular, story about growing up and conquering your fears, Howl's Moving Castle should be a bad movie but it's so infuriatingly magical that I can't help loving it and Ponyo is a kids movie.

Also Miyazaki is a crotchety old man who thinks people with iphones on public transport remind him of masturbating.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 01:52 PM

Yes he is, but it's expected, look what his movies' themes generally are.(Nature goooood, we baaaaaaad, xD)

Wings of Fire 11-17-2011 02:07 PM

Now, the studio in general apart from Miyazaki had two really good directors; Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies) turns shit he touches into gold, but hasn't made a movie for years and Kondou (Whisper of the Heart) unfortunately was pegged as the successor of Ghibli but died young.

Miyazaki's son... I haven't watched Earthsea yet, but from everything OANST has told me about it, I doubt it will leave me very impressed. I'll take his latest film with a grain of salt though. Yonebayashi who recently directed The Borrower Arriety (Good, but not amazing, with a really nice moment that touched on Miyazaki's magic) is probably the hope of the studio.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 02:11 PM

I wonder why takahata hasn't done anything in so long. And yes, kondou's death was tragic...whisper of the heart was such a sweet movie. And, having seen earthsea, yes, it is a mess of a film, but still enjoyable if you aren't expecting his father. Goro did what he could with little experience and much stress.

Wings of Fire 11-17-2011 02:14 PM

I intend to see it, if only because I'll be damned if I don't own the whole Ghibli library and have it stacked up on my shelf with a Catbus plush guarding it.

Even Nate likes Catbus, and he hates animu.

StrangerEastwood 11-17-2011 02:17 PM

That's because the catbus is awesome, and the furriest way to travel. btw, am I the only one who prefers the original dub of totoro to disney's? don't get me wrong, besides ponyo and the constant mispronunciations in it, disney does a great job at dubbing. but the VA's for disney's dub of totoro are...eh. but, I may be biased, as i despise Dakota Fanning.

Strike Witch 11-17-2011 09:21 PM

Pick this up if you want an entertaining anime film

Or just a good film in general.

Mac Sirloin 11-17-2011 10:11 PM

Thanks for reminding me of that. Christmas list updated.

I watched the newest episode of Beavis and Butthead earlier. They were doing a spoof of Super Size Me, which happened to be playing on a seperate channel simultaneously. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the way they animated Fat Butthead and Obese Beavis was thoroughly revolting.

StrangerEastwood 11-18-2011 12:48 AM

That looks distinctly like that animator's work on the animatrix who did the short about the runner. Looks fucking cool, I love the shading.
And oh god, new beavis and butthead...the one with the cult had me in fucking stitches....God.

Sekto Springs 11-18-2011 12:59 AM

That's Madhouse right?

StrangerEastwood 11-18-2011 01:01 AM

It certainly looks like that, I hope it's the guy who did that short in particular, it was incredible. Plus, this looks like a mad max/f zero fever dream. lol

Well, I liked the amateurishly overdubbed and re-sound-effected version that someone (OANST?) posted on here and that has since been taken down from Youtube. The original left me a bit cold in comparison.

Yeah, Redline was animated mostly by hand apparently over a few years. It's basically this over-detailed wacky-races in space dealie.

And it's hella fun, good soundtrack too.

And it bombed becasue there's literally nothing to it but excellent animation.

I still plan to see it though.
