Don't you mean "sk8rz"?

Like any youth culture - it's not the culture itself that is annoying, but the youth. I think if you can actually skateboard, you've earned your right to have a "skater" aesthetic. This isn't actually the case for most skater's I've met. They can barely ollie and suddenly they refuse to wear any apparel that isn't Vans and have accepted Bam Margera as their personal deity. Ugh.

Like any youth aesthetic based around artistic or physical talent, the actual talent takes a back seat to the "look". Same goes for body mod culture, music cultures, etc. If you're going to become invested in a lifestyle, do it because you have an affinity for it, not just because you think it looks good.

That's why I don't do anything.

Except rugger, but even that was for my Dad for a good few years when I despised every single Sunday morning training session.

I love watching parkour.... I wish I had the determination to learn it... What stops me is this general idea that being 22 is too old to really learn it. Specially since I was never big on sports in my life time...

Is anyone in favor of renaming this thread to "extreme sports"?

I used to do Parkour when I was younger and I used to go to this group that meet up in Nottingham called 'PK Notts'. The people there were just off in a flash, up a wall, seen later jumping over buildings.

It was amazing.

I've heard of PK Notts when I was looking around to see if there were any groups. There's one in Hertfordshire but I came to the conclusion I'm too pussy, nor am I limber enough to manage running around roofs etc.

I think Skaters are semi entitled to be dickish about it if they work hard. I've found myself shouting a few vocal shitiots down to size after they tried to make a snark about my riding a bike.

Yeah, I don't mind skaters if they have skill to justify their seemingly badass and rebellious attitude. But most of the skaters around here don't have that, and instead try to do flashy shit that a four year old could pull off in order to look cool. Or they just stand outside Tim Hourton's on a skateboard to impress chicks. Eesh.

He was a sk8tr boi
she said see you later boi

Mudokon_Master 08-17-2011 12:56 AM

Well skaters are rare in Australia. We mostly only get scooter rooters and bike riders.
But the skaters here are mostly decent people, and they're good at it too.
So I look up to skaters.

STM 08-17-2011 03:23 AM

You...look up to....skaters? Sure I like skating but I don't 'look up' to any skaters. Dang.

I'm with T-nex, rename to extreme sports so we can talk about the far superior parkour.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever done or been taught any? I'd love to find a local place which teaches it, but it's pretty damned hard.

STM 08-19-2011 12:26 PM

I did parkour one time and I bent my back backwards.

I used to do Parkour like I said. I was alright, I could do a few decent 'vaults'. Nothing special.
