Champions Online. Despite my earlier complaints, it still begrudgingly accept that you can boot it up and be laughing your head off in about two minutes.

It's like a boiled sweet. It's really tasty, and it can last for a while, but the sweetness gets less and less until it diminishes completely.

This, with the addition that you gradually receive a bit more every time you get tired of the taste, just the amount that might or might not turn out to be good. This afternoon my tank character acquired a powerful sweep punch that sends everyone in front of you flying. Good times.

That Champions Online looks awesome, but there's no way my PC would run it!

You should give it a try - I was surprised to see that it also worked on my laptop, which is not exactly for gaming purposes. And it's still quite playable.

Jordan 06-17-2011 03:40 PM

I'll definitely give it a go, it's free so there's no harm. It looks different that's for sure.

Spiral Knights is super fun :p Too bad about the restriction though... But I guess its part of their money-plan.

I've managed to make almost 4,000 crowns by just dicking around in the early levels for 3 hours. Last I checked, 100 energy could be bought for about 4,800. I'm not seeing it as a huge restriction, but it can be quite annoying. It does make you think about what you're going to do, though. EDIT: In another 30 minutes I turned that into 6900 by doing a runthrough to the teir 2 gate that I couldn't access.

The thing Ive begun to hate about Spiral Knights though, is that everyone just tries to hog everything... Theres no common decency... I actually try to show some decency by leaving some of the item to float for the other players... I guess I shouldn't :p

Heat and crowns are given to everyone. They aren't even divided. Items are given to people randomly. The only things that you pickup just for yourself are in-dungeon powerups.

MeechMunchie 06-18-2011 01:53 PM

I design (what I think are) well-thought out and detailed superheroes just when I think of one, and even the simple ones have brought superhero creation engines to their knees. I'll be interested to see how far CO can get. Will it be able to make Captain Cuttlefish's lifebelt? The Crimson Cobbler's hobnail stash? Remix's myriad cables?

STM 06-19-2011 08:30 AM

Anyone interested in doing some sort of event like MM suggested? For the OWF group, maybe a spiral knights thing...or some other game I dunno.

City of Heroes Goes Free to Play, Renders Champions Online Redundant

Plus, they're honest enough to show you exactly what you miss if you don't pay.

Phylum 06-21-2011 03:20 PM

And it's on Mac, so I can play it.

T-nex 06-21-2011 03:52 PM

Wow... and not even two days ago, I got the trial. :S (wanted to test its character creation. its pretty fun :p) does this mean I can play it without paying? :p Thats cool... I think it's divided by eu/us servers though :(

These super hero MMO's are actually not that bad at all.

Anyway... as of Right now... I'm gonna make a conscious effort to not buy Steam games whenever it's possible to get them elsewhere. Not that there's anything in particular that bothers me about it at all. But This is only the case because everything works optimally. I hear a lot of people have trouble playing offline games, and also when I think about it, the whole principle of HAVING to have steam installed to play certain games is horrendous. I only really realized now that steam is actually required :p(well not really, but I only really gave it a thought now), and I don't agree with that aspect. Maybe I should go back to buying physical games anyway. I miss them. I love having their shiny boxes staring at me :D
For example my Red Alert 3 special edition box is quite shiny and nice. I make love to it.

Anyway I'm having a lot of fun with spiral knights too. still too bad that the energy limit is so low... I'm considering getting the starters pack next month since it's the start of a new month which means.... MONEY :D WAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHHAH! IM RIIICH!

At one time it would've been, but now it's the norm, for better or for worse. And you've got to bear in mind that developers choose to make their deals with Valve. They think Steam can help them turn a profit out of games that we otherwise wouldn't get to see.

In other words, if a developer signs a ballbusting contract with Steam, it's becaue they had no choice. I'd rather get to play the game on Steam than not at all, and I'd rather the devs made a profit reduced by the surely massive comission Steam takes than no profit at all.

Also, do you think we can expand this thread to just F2P games in general? I want to talk about World of Tanks.

dripik 06-23-2011 01:00 PM

Gave WoT a try some weeks ago. Got in a tank, arrived to a battlefield, went off in a completely wrong direction, then turned back to see a lot of floating green cubes which were supposed to mark my allies but there were no tanks there, and finally got shot to bits by German armor.

I might have quit on it too early. All the glitchiness might have been due to my laptop. But the whole thing looked too pro for me, nowadays I tend to look for more casual games.

MeechMunchie 06-23-2011 01:50 PM

It's hard to pick up. I've got a couple of starter articles I can scan in if you want.

Oh well.. i never said Id never buy a steam game ever again :) I really like steam, and I think its features are very convenient.

I just wanna buy from somewhere else first if possible. If not, then steam it is.

Anyway yes. I suppose we can make this a general F2P thread... It's what it seems to be anyway.

That said, I think Im gonna give Dungeons and Dragons online a go too. It seems fun, and I LOVE the fact that it's not just a button/key-binding spam mmo. It's an fps rpg thingy, and the gameplay seems fun. So Ima try it :D

Also, Im finding Spiral knights so much fun still. ^^ Such a great pass-time.

Apparently Team Fortress 2 is now free to play, downloading now.

How overwhelming will all the updates be to a person who has only ever played bare bones TF2 on 360?

Beat me to it. Maybe if I didn't watch the Meet the Medic video at least five times this morning, I would have been able to share the news earlier.

Well, let's just say you'll have plenty to experience. I bought TF2 for PC around the first Halloween update, so I'm not familiar the "bare bones TF2" concept. I'd guess you'll be alright, especially if you get excited about all the items, hats, extra features and all.

Jordan 06-23-2011 11:14 PM

That's funny, I went on TF2 yesterday on the 360. Do you need a good PC to play it? I have a good mind to get more into it if it's free.

enchilado 06-23-2011 11:55 PM

I was going to install it until I saw that I have 5GB free and it needs 10.

:(

I think the specs are fairly similar to Portal and Half-Life 2, and both of those are (to my knowledge) well-optimised for lower performance PCs - I can play them decently on my integrated graphics card if I turn down the resolution and effects a little.

Jordan 06-24-2011 01:50 AM

May have to install it then and have a go. Was only asking because it's a 10GB file and didn't want to wait ages for it to install then find out I can't play it.

Phylum 06-24-2011 02:08 AM

Oh my god. I'm downloading this next month. Fuck my free copy of Infamous on the PSN, I want online shooty action. Quake seems to have died in Adelaide.

Dynamithix 06-24-2011 03:47 AM

It's funny how many people are bitching in the Youtube comments about it being free and that "this will ruin the game" even though they probably only paid 'bout 15$ for Orange Box which included 5 amazing games that they still keep playing. I don't regret paying for TF2, now that it's free the last 100 people who haven't played it can play it.

STM 06-24-2011 04:38 AM

OH SHIT! I am so downloading this...shame it's going to take 11 hours to download off my wireless but nvm!

Ridg3 06-24-2011 06:02 AM

I'm going to download it but knowing myself, I'll probably get bored and go back to Forsaken World. Which is pretty damn good if I do say so.

you've probably already played it but it's a completely different game.

Mac Sirloin 06-24-2011 07:25 AM

Such a brilliant idea. Why make them pay a premium when they can just loop people in with a free download and an item store? I love Valve so much. I'm probably going to start playing TF2 again.

MeechMunchie 06-24-2011 07:28 AM

Pfft, now we're gonna get all the chaff.

T-nex 06-24-2011 07:30 AM

Yeeeeeeeeeeeesssss!!! I've been wanting to play tf2 for a while now :D Never got around to buying it. Im SOOO SO getting :3 yeyeyeyey.

T-nex 07-01-2011 05:31 PM

Ok so there's another free to play game here by Petroglyph. Not sure exactly what it is since I haven't played, but Petroglyph in my opinion are a good company that makes fun games. A lot of the Westwood developers are found in this company(but it has now expanded way beyond that).

Here's a link. It seems to be some fantasy themed thingy :p
