There's implication on Facebook that Olly's okay. The details are beyond my viewing privileges, though, she hasn't signed in and said herself.

EDIT: all right, confirmation. She and her friends are safe in Tokyo.

I don't like second hand news, but I can't read Japanese or find the information on any english news sites as it happens at present.

Statistically it is.

That's an awful thing to say. What is wrong with you?

Leto 03-11-2011 09:50 PM

this is just terrible and my sympathies go to japan.

Daxter King 03-11-2011 10:46 PM

Tragic news, found out about it this morning, didn't have much time to read a lot of it though. Hundreds dead, terrible. Hopefully the nuclear reactor doesn't cause too much damage. Also, one of my teachers said something about a train along the coast went entirely missing when the tsunami hit, any word on that?

Jordan 03-12-2011 01:21 AM

That's absolutely mental. I wish them all luck.

I see what you did there. And pretty much everywhere throughout the article you wrote up.

Apparently, there was an explosion at the nuclear plant. Let's hope the whole thing will not be topped by an even greater disaster.

Might be useful for folk involved.

Update on the reactor: It's building up presure rapidly. The US has supplied coolant for the plant to help out but the backup system doesn't work either. Now they want to release radioactive vapors in order to decrease the pressure and prevent a complete leak. Thousands of people have been evacuated in a 2 kilometer area around the plant.

Uhm... I'm hoping I've circled the wrong building. And if I'm not wrong, I'm hoping that building didn't contain a nuclear reactor. It'll be like Chernobyl all over again, this time in a more populated area...

What else is in a nuclear power station that could cause that to happen?

Havoc 03-12-2011 04:56 AM

According to the news it hasn't officially gone meltdown, but there has been a secondary explosion that wrecked a good part of the building. Radiation levels seem to be going down for some reason, but no-one is getting any solid news right now about the reactor. The evacuation zone has been expanded to 20 kilometers though.

Oh dear.

Believe me, it's way better that they move that than being very static.

Update: There's been a small leak, as news translate. I'm trying to find where.
ALSO, if you have friends in Japan, try using Facebook, Twitter or any social network and keep the phones lines open just for emergencies.

Bullet Magnet 03-12-2011 04:31 PM

I now present you all with two choices. Any harm done will be entirely self-inflicted.

I follow the head translator of a translation project I've been keeping tabs on on twitter because I enjoy reading his posts and I think he has a cute personality. He lives in Japan, and intermixed with all the recent updates of praying for his countrymen and pissing his pants over his family's wellbeing he posted

Probably I should ignore those talking about the karma thing... I feel sad, but I don't think I can do anything to stop them...
Poor thing.

Jesus Christ. terrible.

Honestly, though. What is wrong with people?

Manco 03-13-2011 03:04 PM

So a volcano has erupted in Japan: http://www.timeslive.co.za/world/art...volcano-erupts

Ridg3 03-13-2011 03:16 PM

Japan aren't getting it easy are they? Hopefully no one was hurt from it.

Bullet Magnet 03-13-2011 03:19 PM

Can you provide a link that hasn't got dribbling idiots posting their opinions on it? Christ.

Also, the volcano isn't nearly as bad as it sounds. It's been expected for a while, and the eruption is hardly devastating.

Those braindead ignorant fucks must not be aware that the US nuked two major cities in Japan as retaliation for Pearl Harbor... :fuzemb:

Steamer_KING 03-14-2011 08:18 AM

So, the world is on chaos right now, whether on the media or in catastrophes...Is it, The End?

Bullet Magnet 03-14-2011 08:21 AM

No.

Havoc 03-14-2011 08:36 AM

There's a problem cooling the second reactor with seawater and the reactor is completely dry. It isn't looking good.

Manco 03-14-2011 09:49 AM

When did this happen?

A news cast this morning said the fumes from the explosion will be blown out to sea, rather than over the mainland.

Apparently, another quake is predicted to hit by Thursday, hopefully it'll be less serious.

Havoc 03-14-2011 11:13 AM

I saw it on the news this morning so I suppose somewhere last night.

Mr. Bungle 03-14-2011 11:35 AM

The world's just falling apart. Damn.

No, it isn't more-so than usual. Terrible things like what's happening in Japan right now are a regular occurrence - It just happens to have a lot of media coverage.

7.30pm GMT: Here is a summary of the latest news so far today:

• The combined death toll from Japan's earthquake and tsunami is likely to exceed 10,000, reports state broadcaster NHK. About 2,000 bodies have been found washed up found on two areas of Miyagi prefecture.

• A hydrogen explosion happened at the number three reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, in the early hours of Monday morning (local time). The plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power company (Tepco) said 11 people were injured.

- Tepco said nuclear fuel rods at the reactor are exposed and overheating, raising the risk of them melting. Up to 190 people are suspected of being exposed to radiation, according to officials.

• The International Atomic Energy Agency says the Fukushima crisis is unlikely to become another Chernobyl. Authorities have set up a 20km (12 mile) exclusion zone around the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Meanwhile, the US agreed to Japan's formal request for supplies and equipment to tackle the crisis.

• Almost two million households remain without power in the north of Japan, where snow is forecast later this week, while around 1.4 million households have no running water. Those with power are being affected by rolling blackouts as electricity shortages force reductions in service in some areas.

• Japan's central bank plans to inject $85bn billion into the economy to help the banking system to function as many businesses remain closed. Economists at Credit Suisse bank are calculating the effects of the disaster on the worst hit areas to cost around $171bn.
