Oh god.

I hope that they don't give Abe an Exoddus voice.

Nate 01-29-2011 07:55 PM

I think this is the stupidest idea in the history of stupid ideas. There, I said it.

As I've said elsewhere, repeatedly, a graphical rejig that didn't take up too much time or effort would indeed be welcome. But if they're putting in the work to create entirely new models and environments... just make a goddamn new game already.

Abe's Oddysee HD!....and the mods said it won't happen!

Where did anyone say that?

Phylum 01-29-2011 08:11 PM

I think he's referring to you saying what you just said.

metroixer 01-29-2011 08:13 PM

But dude it's what the fans wanted.....and the fans are always right.

I couldn't agree more

Sekto Springs 01-29-2011 08:13 PM

Mods never said they wouldn't remake it. Just that they wouldn't be able to make an HD version with the original graphics.

OddYouko 01-29-2011 08:52 PM

Hm. This sounds interesting.
Normally I'd probably be disappointed of something like this. A game from 1997 being redone and with new stuff possibly added in.. But seeing as it's Abe's Oddysee, the game I grew to freakin' love, I have to say I'm somewhat happy for this.

This is the one thing that's got me a little disappointed though.

Though I won't be saying much else until I read more information on it.

Clannfear 01-30-2011 01:27 AM

There always be whining about "this!.. and that!"... So this don't really bothering me.

I hope that this will be remade with original voices (not from munch... that was so .. you know ;) funy?) and clearly redone landscapes with hd.

SpAM_CAN 01-30-2011 01:51 AM

Oh for flip's sake- Lorne, stop remaking old games and make new ones. Remakes are usually not particularly good anyway (unless JAW manage to match it up 1:1). I think this is simply because he has forgotten how to make these games. Like, he doesn't know what made them good.

I just hope this doesn't spell death for the last Cinematic Platformer.

NovaMan 01-30-2011 02:24 AM

Make a 2.5D oddworld game with lava and ice areas + Desert areas + water to swim and dive in.

Clannfear 01-30-2011 02:46 AM

Yes! And with jumping seals, crouching monkeys and other Crash Bandicoot stuff!...

...

O_o

sigh...

No, lets not do that. That sounds awful.

The minecar can drive in the lava.
The lava is at the bottom of the cave.

The ice areas should bring snow with snow stroms and evasive ice + holes in the ice, leading to deadly cold water.

The desert areas should have the feel from arabic egypt with pyramids and sandstorms.

The water can be compared to lakes and seas. A shark will eat and kill Abe, if Abe dives too deep. Don't expect to see underwater caves with slig submarines.

MeechMunchie 01-30-2011 03:27 AM

wow lorne got old

Dynamithix 01-30-2011 03:34 AM

I'm still glad that they're doing an Abe's Oddysee HD remake because it was one of the first games that I played and thought was really amazing.

Xavier 01-30-2011 04:02 AM

Most of the fans seem happy, I guess that's a good thing. I really hope JAW will do it right even if that's a hell of a challenge. IMO the gameplay "feel" should be 100% the same.

And I really hope they are also working on something NEW!

The Brewmaster 01-30-2011 04:28 AM

I agree with what Paul has said I also bought and completed the 2 Abe games on PSN over the summer of last year and then even bought a second hand X-box from my local gamestation for £15 and bought the other 2 just to complete the series. I know everyone is excited about it but we have been waiting 6 years and all we get is remakes of the games we have already played? Surely as strong of a fan base as we are they should show us something that we haven't seen before!

Crashpunk 01-30-2011 05:18 AM

I'm surprised everyone is a bit disappointing with this. I don't know why?

Yeah okay its not a new Oddworld game and sure they've just released the OddBox with AO in it but I mean come on! its a re-make of one of the greatest games with HD graphics? I myself is very happy with this and i can't wait for more.

:

I think I remember (don't quote me on this) one of the mods saying a HD remake is unlikely. I think it was Max. but i don't remember what thread

Clannfear 01-30-2011 06:48 AM

And what's wrong with (probably) Max answer? Even Alf spoken about "crash chance" to make remakes.

Dixanadu 01-30-2011 07:12 AM

I support this fully.

Y'all need to push them thar negative thoughts out of your head. I'm sure it'll be just fine, if it is different, maybe it will be such in a good way?

STM 01-30-2011 07:20 AM

I agree with Dixandu,
Why moan about a remake of one of your favourite games? They might still need to gain more profits to make an entirely new game, it's like, nothing since 2005 and now all this new amazing crap and people are moaning...you don't have to buy or even acknowledge this remake right?

Manco 01-30-2011 07:21 AM

I have to agree with Nate, it does seem like a lot of effort to remake an old game, and I would definitely prefer to see something new.

Still, no point in dwelling on it - as long as they capture the original's atmosphere, I'll buy and love it.

EDIT: I want to see the inevitable 1:1 comparison video between the original and the remake.

Because now we have an indie game company that has proven itself to be clumsy with something as simple as a port working on 3 projects at once, all of which will take a significant amount of resources. To have this all happen at the same time, I can't help but feel the quality of the end products will suffer.

That being said, I'll still end up buying it all because I'm a consumer whore.

STM 01-30-2011 07:30 AM

High five for consumer whorism.

I reckon they can pull it off, these guys aren't six year old's and I reckon they might have done a better job of the ports if they hadn't been so rushed with stupid release dates which they obviously couldn't meet...so they had to push for 'as soon as possible' instead.

Software Bug 01-30-2011 07:32 AM

I really hope they get the right atmosphere in the remake... It's a lot more work to achieve it. I just hope they keep the same camera (like 90 degree) as in AO and AE, not like many of the remakes position it just a bit above the player that it looks down...

I think Stewart Gilray said on the Steam forums that the quality of the SW port suffered because they had to port a game built entirely around the Xbox's hardware/software to a VERY different platform.

He then said that this wouldn't be a problem with future projects because they were being built from the ground up with middleware software, so platform compatability wouldn't be an issue.

Mudokens can't swim.

Ok. So after I thought about it a little bit more, and let my dad read the information, I've actually grown really excited for this. It'll defiantly give the older and newer fans alike another chance to play the game that started the series, especially if they aren't able to get their hands on the 1997 AO.
Just hoping his voice won't sound AE-like and the music stays the same. :)

The mudokons can't swim.

Why can only the humans swim?

Michael 01-30-2011 11:07 AM

I'm really excited for this :D on ONE condition- Abe doesn't end up with a health bar! :fuzmad:

To everyone wondering why they're focusing on a remake, I believe it's probably to 'begin again' for a new generation of gamers. Its been nearly 14 years since AO came out and people have a fascination with new and shiny things. I imagine many wouldnt play AO simply because its an old game, and they want to play the latest thing. Perhaps an HD remake then would introduce that new generation of gamers to the series from the beginning?

Btw, for some time i've been remaking the first Rupturefarms level from AO in LittleBigPlanet, screen for screen! Now that LBP2 is out, there are much better ways to approach the obstacles (Sackbots for Mudokons etc), so i'll keep at it and let you guys know when its done- maybe the wait for a 2.5D remake isnt that long after all ;)

Crashpunk 01-30-2011 11:22 AM

This is just a AO HD remake. I don't think they'll add anything new to the game.

OddChipango 01-30-2011 11:53 AM

Those news gave me an orgasm.
