AF?

LIJI 12-21-2010 04:56 PM

Just played MO for the first time in life. (For 2 minutes, untill it crashed)
First impression - Why the hell does Abe jump like it's a Sonic game? :O

AF?

Anisotropic filtering

It makes the textures look less blurry from a distance. Some anti aliasing would also be nice but I couldn't get it working with Stranger.

Yeah, that's a bit weird. Another thing I dislike is that you can be bitten several times by slogs without dying.

For Stranger you get four preset resolutions to choose from, and you can add custom resolutions in the config file, but the games lags like hell at high resolutions for most people.

There's no graphics settings, just resolution settings. Low to Ultra all have the same textures, shadows, shaders etc. When you add AF to the game (through your card driver) the game looks noticeable clearer than the Xbox version, but it's essentially the same game only in HD.

I'm pretty sure JAW has stated that adding more in-depth graphics options just isn't possible due to the way the game was originally built.

DemySP 12-22-2010 05:57 AM

I am sad for the language. I remember that the Xbox edition of Munch's Odyssee had just dubbed in italian, it is not in the edition for PC ... a pity.

Pinstripe 12-22-2010 06:35 AM

Munch didn't crash once on my rig - guess I'm lucky.

Stranger runs great with medium res, but I'm waiting for a patch so I can play it with my native res.

Hey Guys,
I have a question about Stranger's Wrath.
Did they remove some dialogue from the game?
The reason that I ask is because in the first cutscene at the first town when Stranger puts the outlaw in jail and before he goes out to go to the bail office, when he talks to the outlaw in the cell he always says the same thing. In the Xbox version he said at least 3 different things before repeating himself. I don't know if this is a bug or was done on purpose. I haven't had a chance to play any further.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Sekto Springs 12-22-2010 10:29 AM

I don't have much experience, but I've found that PC ports of games sometimes have less variety in dialogue and music than the console versions. I don't know why this is, but I've noticed it in Quake 4, Bioshock, Jericho, and a few others.

It seems like a bug on your end. For me he cycles between three different responses. I've just completed the second town and it is identical to the Xbox version, they just need to patch it up some more.

EDIT: Actually you're right, I replayed that area and I misremembered. Hopefully the devs will look into this.

EDIT2: The CEO of JAW said this is being rectified. It was due to having to re-add all the audio files into their new system and they missed a few.

lismati 12-23-2010 02:07 AM

Hmm, why isn't there sky in SW? I have black sky instead.

This is what I'm getting.

This was on one of the comment sections on OWI's FaceBook page:

:

We WILL be adding more achievements in the New Year :)

I'm glad to hear this because the current achievements are pretty stupid, you just basically have to complete the game and you have every achievement done.

AO and AE has always had other languages.

Yeah, who even bothers completing the game? Stupid.

GlukkonGluk 12-23-2010 07:34 AM

So, the first thing they give us is just a remake (not exactly original) AND they don't even make it work properly??

Hum.

Hum indeed.

Apparently you're not the only one to notice this, but here's your answer: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...&postcount=225
:

I've put our audio guy onto this...

The Audio in PC Stranger is a complete re-implementation from the XBox version.

The XBox used a system called XACT 1.0, this system is only compatible with Xbox1, so we looked at moving up to XACT3, but took the decision to re-do it with FMod as that is cross platform.

As such we went back to the original 16bit 44khz audio files, instead of the 8bit 11khz versions.

What this meant was, we literally had to by hand re-create the project with FMod Designer, and re-add all 6347(something) audio queues in.

If we missed a couple of the "randoms" it was an oversight and we will address it
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...&postcount=232

This has been fixed, it was incorrectly setup in the FMod Project.

Yeah, who even bothers completing the game? Stupid.

My point was that there could be more variety than just "mission" based achievements.

By the way, Munch works perfectly for me now. Thank you JAW for patching it. :)

Yeah, who even bothers completing the game? Stupid.

Yeah, because that's why we like achievements, because they're there to remind us, "Durr, hey, guess what! You're playing something, and you just now got to this point! Good work, stupid! Here's a cookie!"

Because obviously if we were stupid enough to buy these sad, glitchy excuses for comebacks, then we're too stupid to know when we've bagged a bounty, or to see that there are indeed two Gloktogi guarding Sekto, rather than just one.

"NOW THERE ARE TWOOOO?!" No fucking way! How about an achievement for using the crossbow? Or for not fucking falling off of a cliff in the tutorial? WHO'S A SMART PLAYER? WHO'S A SMART LITTLE MONEY BAG?

Wil 12-23-2010 09:28 AM

Yeah, not including more imaginative achievements in the initial release must be earning them an absolute fortune.

Good of you to miss the point of my rant in favor of cutting them some slack that they don't need.

Adding depth to their games beyond making them creative and quirky (trying too hard, imo, as evidenced by their habit of using "Z"s at the end of collective nouns in an attempt to hip-hop up Oddworld in the whitest way possible) is something that's always escaped OWI, and these lackluster "zone completed" achievements are a reflection of that. At least in Stranger, this was somewhat remidied by giving the titular character an opportunity to roam around town, but what he could do was restricted somewhat so they could push the story along. Oddworld is supposedly this vast place with many different species and rich histories, so... show us that.

Now I realize that the restrictive nature of the games was due in part to the studios being absolute fuckheads to Lorne and crew, but he doesn't have that excuse to fall back on here, and he's released some pretty unimpressive ports, after about a five year period of spitballing these worthless ideas (like that social network that never saw the light of day?) when he could have been taking the games and expanding upon them with that time.

Honestly, who knows what Lorne's been through? Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon, but I really hope if I'm wrong, that he does get on the ball and start actually improving his properties. He's got a whole slew of new opportunities now. He's gonna have extra revenue coming in for it now, and even if it's not that much, I hope he does something with it to improve his games.

MojoMan220 12-23-2010 10:54 AM

Jesus... achievements are probably the most pointless thing in the world. Like you were saying Dippstikk, I don't need to be told when I've done certain tasks. Achievements in games could have been a cool idea if they actually gave you something in return for your efforts. Unless you find Monopoly money valuable, I don't see the point.

That did not in any capacity warrant 3 paragraphs. They've stated that more achievements are being added. You are putting way too much thought into this.

I think achievements add more replay value to games. I think it's fun to do small challenges throughout the game.

MojoMan220 12-23-2010 11:45 AM

They can be mildly amusing, but certainly nothing to get worked up over.

Good of you to miss the point of my rant in favor of cutting them some slack that they don't need.

And good of you to over react so much.

Half-Life 2 was on Steam for five years before it got any achievements at all while MO and SW have been out all of 4 days? I wouldn't mind in the slightest if I'd seen folks comment casually and constructively that they'd like there to be more achievements, but most complaints I've seen have been rude and dismissive.

LIJI 12-23-2010 01:36 PM

More impression and stuff:
Abe's Oddysee in Japanese is funnily good! The voice acting is very different but still very good. Also new Mudokon Pops and poorly removed finger! :D

Munch's Oddysee also plays just as well on VMWare Fusion. SW doesn't work for me in VMWare, must reboot to play.

brechtos 12-23-2010 01:58 PM

Haven't really had any real big problems since release. At least no gamestoppers.
Munch worked fine once I got beyond the tutorial area (and as long as I don't use the mouse for camera control:p)

Only issues I have with stranger is perhaps an unstable framerate at times, fluctuating from 50 fps to 25 in the first town area and going lower in heavy action packed sections.
My biggest issue with stranger is the missing of mouse filtering causing the first person gameplay to be really jittery and annoying. However :
:

this is due to Stranger NOT having any mouse filtering, we will rectify this :)
SO YAY:D

I'm just happy to be finally able to play MO and SW as I never found the motivation to get myself an X-box.

Kudos for JAW for really looking into all the issues that have been pouring in.
Not sure how big their team is but they sure are trying hard and pulling long hours to fix as many issues as possible.
Problems where to be expected with the porting of old xbox games to PC.

As for the simple achievements...They probably had a bigger focus on actually getting the games to run first instead of trying to implement steam achievements into the old code. But since there really seems to be a big demand I'm sure that they will add in some nice extra ones. But face it, how much original ones can you add apart from "save all fuzzles", "collect xxxxx amount of yyyyy", "don't save a single fuzzle", ... .

Looking forward to what the future will bring after the fixes and the HD remaster of stranger:fuzgrin:

Thanks for the info. I was resigned to accept the difference, now I don't have to.
Cool.

Strike Witch 12-23-2010 08:34 PM

Well, a friend of mine bought it for me as a Steam Gift for christmas

I also get lag when I try high resolution, but medium is perfectly playable.

One thing is that the controls feel awkward, can I hook up a 360 controller or something?
