Since Calvin & Hobbes was mentioned:

As someone who's never read that strip before, is it worth buying the C&H complete collection? I've heard lots of good things about that strip, but pretty much always from people who read it while it was in print.

I'm just wondering if not having that nostalgia will affect my enjoyment of it.

The whole collection? Eh, I don't think so. I can imagine it would be pretty expensive. I'd start with Revenge of the Babysat or maybe Scientific Progress goes Boink!. Those are two of my favorites, but they're all great.

It's pretty save. But you can visit a comic shop first and run over the pages.

now by thinking back on the funniest comic strips I've ever read, The Far Side Comics are still hilarious. I love the humour of Gary Larson.

Yeah, Far Side are probably a close second in my favorite comic strips. I just love how surreal some of them are.

I need to buy a Far Side collection.

The complete collection is really only for the hardcore fans. The individual book collections are a better choice, cheaper, and you can see if you like it as opposed to paying a couple hundred bucks for something that's heavier than most TVs.

I like Calvin Hobbes' Revenge of the Baby Sat too! I got that one and Mutant Snowmen(something..like that) and The Days Are Just Packed. I love the art work. Bill Waterson, from my memory, is the name of the creator, and he creates cartoon and realistic hybrid images seamlessly. I love it. The Far Side is too dry for me, and I hate the artwork with the big body small head people.

Revenge of the Baby Sat is a good start. Not for any particular reason, it's just all-around adequate.

Thanks for all the Calvin and Hobbes advice, guys. There's no comic book shop near me unfortunately, but I did take a skim through Amazon's Look Inside feature, and it does look good.

I agree that maybe buying the Complete Collection is a bit expensive, but I'm looking at this list, and it looks like my only options are to buy each year's individual book or to buy the Complete Collection.
Thing is, the individual books are all priced between £6 - £10, and there's 11 of them.

If we're talking paper strips, Doonesbury kicks ass.
