I have been watching X's videos ever since I saw your thread. Now, I'm addicted to watching them, I'm up to episode 26. I like X. He's a cool guy.

Dynamithix 09-29-2010 02:57 AM

Yeah, until you watch episode 40. Your heart will be broken. D:

dripik 09-29-2010 12:18 PM

Well, after reading your post, Dynamithix, I was kinda expecting a moment of fail when he was edging that pool of lava in Death Mountain. But there was episode 41, which was rather epic after the dramatic ending of 40.

enchilado 09-29-2010 12:24 PM

This game rocks. Have you guys tried griefing yet?

Alf Shall Rise 09-29-2010 02:19 PM

What's griefing?

Yeah, I know. Episode 40 still was frightening. D:

Damn griefer, get off my lawn!

I tried Minecraft Classic (the free browser version) today, just to see whether I'd actually enjoy the "building stuff" part. I tried my hand at building a simple shelter and a lookout tower attached. Apparently, I'll be fine.

Wil 09-30-2010 04:40 PM

Today I built a fucking huge greenhouse to start a farm. It took several days to complete, and then creepers started blowing huge chunks of unregatherable glass out of it. This also blasted a sneaky entrance into my cave system, and bit by bit, night by night, my base was exploded away as I wearily tried to rebuild each day.

When I ran out of glass and sand entirely, I decided to go on an overland recce and found a dungeon (with a zombie spawner, which I plan to turn into a water trap for all my automated feather production needs), a frozen lagoon, and a beautiful sandy outcrop with one motherfucking scary near-vertical cave that I desperately want to explore, if only I had a) any coal to make torches and b) sleep in pill form, so I could just keep playing right up to tomorrow's lecture on soil.

Dynamithix 09-30-2010 07:24 PM

I'm confused. Are you disliking Minecraft or not? You seem to have aggressive feelings about it. Anyways, don't get within 1 square of Creepers because then they'll blow up, otherwise they won't.

dripik 09-30-2010 09:42 PM

I think Wil probably likes MC if he has the patience to do all that. Besides, I think I'd have aggressive feelings too if I found out that some Creepers decided to solve the ventilation problem of my carefully designed shelter.

Dynamithix 10-01-2010 02:36 AM

Hah, quite right. Also, can Creepers explode whilst you're not near them? I mean, if you're next to your shelter's wall, and a Creeper is outside that wall, can it explode? I'm not sure about that.

Thanks, I had noticed. The problem was that I was building a corridor to connect my base and my greenhouse, but because my base is set into a mountain, mobs like to approach from above.

Wings of Fire 10-01-2010 03:43 AM

Fuck.

I'm starting to want this game.

MeechMunchie 10-01-2010 03:55 AM

Build something out of Lego instead.

Wings of Fire 10-01-2010 04:04 AM

This is far cheaper.

MeechMunchie 10-01-2010 04:09 AM

And more fun.

Dynamithix 10-01-2010 04:32 AM

See? Minecraft is good. ;)

Nate 10-01-2010 06:26 AM

I still don't see where it starts to become fun. But I must admit that I'm impressed by other people's timesink projects. This guy is building a computer, starting with the arithmetic unit.

Can anyone explain what the red glowy things are?

dripik 10-01-2010 07:00 AM

It's called Redstone/Red Ore; it can be used to connect various "function objects" (doors, Redstone torches, minecarts, etc.) to switches, pressure platforms and such. You just draw a line of Redstone between the objects you want to connect and operate the link with the switch/pressure platform.

But seriously. 16-bit ALU in Minecraft. How does one decide to do that.

Wil 10-01-2010 08:48 AM

Redstone dust acts as an electric wire, which transmits charge if you stand on a pressure plate, flip a switch or press a button. The red torches are redstone torches. They are always on, but when you send a charge to a redstone torch, it turns off. Basically it's a NOT gate, but one you can use as both an input and output.

There are so many because charge will only travel 15 blocks along redstone dust, but you can set up a series of torches to extend this.

Nemo 10-01-2010 10:20 AM

Redstone is useful for if you want to build giant weak computers that can't do much or if you want to use up space in your inventory.

I only have enough time for the latter.

Dynamithix 10-01-2010 10:45 AM

Nemo tells the truth.

I have about 5 stacks of 64 redstone and I can't even make an use out of it. I've made those torches and all kinds of stuff, but I prefer wooden objects like doors and such, rather than steel doors that have to be activated by a switch and some red baby powder, hah.

Wings of Fire 10-01-2010 05:59 PM

Day 1 of Minecraft

Joe finds awesome cave, makes base out of it. Goes on a midnight stroll loses orientation. Loses cave forever,

Wil 10-01-2010 07:00 PM

I spent the better part of today trying to build a pig trap. It works too well in producing the pigs, not well enough burning them to a cinder, so I end up with a cave filled with pigs.

I tried to solve the problem by adding more lava flow, but it kept solidifying into cobblestone when the water hit it (unlike the existing lave flow, which is weird). In trying to solve that I accidentally flooded the entirity of the cavern systems below me with lava. Clearing it out is an absolute bitch.

Phylum 10-01-2010 08:20 PM

Damn, I wish I had a compter to run this.

Dynamithix 10-02-2010 12:29 AM

I think it's funny that my computer can run almost any game on the highest graphics setting without even making a sound, but then we come to Minecraft, a game that's graphics basically are huge pixels, my computer seems to get lag in it sometimes. Oh yeah, in multiplayer it sometimes make a weird noise, ha.

dripik 10-02-2010 12:52 AM

I'm still trying to buy the game - apparently, I don't have the proper card type for the purchase, but I'm getting around it (i.e. gifting).

Have any of you seen (or built) minecarts which are driven by Redstone? I've been thinking about a plan to build an underground train system on the starting island. I've read that you can craft carts that use fuel, but that's nowhere near as cool as just jumping in a cart, flipping a switch on the wall and riding down to the other side of the island.

My other plan is to build oil rigs (practically mining stations) and a series of lit bouys along sea routes. Would make a neat sight at night, and also practical, should I die on an island that's not the spawn island.

TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS A DAY

THAT'S HOW MUCH THE CREATOR OF MINECRAFT MAKES FROM DONATIONS ALONE

"Mom! We're rich!"

Dynamithix 10-02-2010 01:34 AM

Could very well be.
