Well; to be fair, I think a release of AO on the iPhone will be justified as long as it helps fund an entirely new Oddworld game, however...its still annoying having to wait even longer for them to produce a new game. >.< Like Jordan said; its a bit of a cocktease. :/

Of course they did, apparently it was't good enough then :-). But they also made some really bad choices in the past (going to xbox, going to EA) so they are maybe too careful with picking the right sponsor.

Moving to the XBox wasn't necessarily a bad choice. Making a deal that forced them to put out a game that wasn't anywhere near ready was a very bad choice, however.

looney-bin 08-06-2010 03:09 PM

AO has too many button commands to be properly ported to the iPhone. Have you tried playing COD Zombies on an iPhone? Imagine the experience from that but 10 times worse.

It's not so much the waiting that I'm annoyed about, I'm a little irritated but that I can deal with because I understand they might be going through some issues and might not be able to announce anything major yet. It's the random comments from the importants that are annoying, makes it seem like they're making fun of us...

Anyway if they do something on the Iphone I really hope it won't be Iphone exclusive but also available on other smart phones (android and windows).

Well yeah, atleast if it's across multiple products of the same type, it would seem like OWI are actually interested in the platform, and not just making a deal with a company to have an exclusive.

Kerblamowz 08-07-2010 10:53 AM

Anyone think it's likely that if Oddworld is coming to iPhone that gamespeak will be handled by actually speaking into the iPhone's microphone? I think it's a pretty nifty idea but there would be many problems surrounding it.

Xavier 08-07-2010 12:59 PM

Haha, yes. That would be very embarassing. Voice recognition software isn't very reliable either, so it would just be a very frustrating game mechanic.

Well it will be interesting to see if Oddworld really does come to iPhone. But I hope it isn't a remake. There's not much point in playing the same old games just on a different platform with unreliable controls.

Yup. Definitely. I came to post this, slightly gutted you beat me to it. It would be impossible to use Gamespeak through controls due to the lack of command buttons. Clogging up the touch screen with icons is going to be difficult enough, so yeah, the voice recognition would in theory work pretty well and since the voice commands are so basic, I would say if it is an iPhone release, then this is a very plausible speculation. The iPhone voice recognition is pretty decent anyway, it could handle it well. But even as an iPhone owner, I would be disappointed if the announcement is just AO for iPhone and Oddbox on Steam. Anyway, excellent detective work Xav!

Actually, come to think of it, I swear the game is actually going to be impossible to play on the iPhone. Given how complex some puzzles become and how quick-witted you need to be with the controls. The iPhone can't handle gaming properly as it is, to think, sprinting, rolling, chanting (lol if that's voice recognition implemented). I dunno, we'll see! :fuzmad::fuzconf::fuzsad:

Edit: Also the fact JAW+Abe have been tweeting via iPhone may be an indirect or direct clue. Maybe the same iPhone they tweeted from has been used to test the game?!

Wil 08-07-2010 05:01 PM

I think JAW has been tweeting via iPhone is purely because they have one.

Exactly what I meant about 'indirect clue', the company itself uses the gadget, they're developing a game for that paticular gadget. We could only assume that they used them purely because they had them, but now there is additional meaning to the company tweeting from it.

Crashpunk 08-08-2010 01:34 AM

Is this amazing news, i can't wait untill release.

What do you think the price will be?

squeak117 08-08-2010 01:38 AM

I'm gonna say Twenty moolah(s).
I believe they said somewhere that the prices were going to be more around the $9.99 - $19.99 mark. Which in one way is excellent news, but in another means they won't be excitingly large games.

Yeah, you might be right about this one, I can't really see how AO would be playable on Iphone. But I'm still willing to bet something Odd is coming on Iphone!

I doubt it. They have an iPhone because freaking everyone has an iPhone these days.

#3 is largely irrelevant; absolutely everyone has a freaking iPhone these days.

I think I see a pattern here...

Crashpunk 08-08-2010 03:26 AM

If the port is happening, i'm a bit worried about the controls because let's face it. Iphone game have rubbish controls.

Phylum 08-08-2010 03:32 AM

Not always. Games that try to emulate controllers have bad controls.

I believe that if an Oddwolrd game were to be released on Iphone, it would utilise the touch/motion controls and be clever in it's doing so.

Crashpunk 08-08-2010 03:35 AM

Oh I see, like the Sonic 1 Port?

Phylum 08-08-2010 04:22 AM

No. That would be trying to emulate a controller and not, form the way you've used the game, utilising the iPhone control scheme.

I think I see a pattern here...

If I have to repeat myself because people don't listen, then I have to repeat myself because people don't listen.

Also I loathe how many people have iPhones.

Phylum 08-08-2010 05:55 AM

Why do you have to repeat yourself?

I only loathe iPhones when people use them to show-off.

Nate 08-08-2010 06:02 AM

I have to repeat myself because people don't listen. And because people don't listen, I have to repeat myself.

Me too. But that's the only time I ever see people using iPhones.

Anyway, all jokes aside, this thread should not become a platform war. Discuss the possibility of an Oddworld iPhone app, not the relative quality of iPhones in and of themselves.

Too bad for the people that can't whistle high and low. And how about when you need to fart all the time? Can you produce three in a row?
(fake mouth farts counts as cheating!)

Mmm, I don't see a port working for Iphone because it's such a hard thing ot do to re make the controls. I can see a mini game being made maybe the long awaited sligstorm? But no, not Ao / AE

learn to use Edit :fuzemb:

And I think the port will be very interesting and it could work
but they'll have to do a lot of changes to make it work for Iphone as we've said.

don't get your hopes up for a New Oddworld Just for Iphone and a Oddworld mini-game will really not work.

Havoc 08-08-2010 06:12 PM

I can't see AO working on any touch based device. Some of the puzzles simply require too much speed to accuratly get through on a (sometimes not completely registering) touch screen. Imagine playing through the last level or the temple finale's. That's already a lot of button bashing on a controler or a keyboard, and they want to port that to a touch screen? Nuh-uh. Not gonna work.

If they are developing something for the iPhone I think it will be a completely new project, not simply a port. It might be released under the name Abe's Oddysee, but it will be a completely new game with new puzzles and new gameplay. Pretty much like MO for the gameboy. Same title, completely different game.

Good work Xav.

I really hope this isn't true. Why waste time on a port for some shitty overrated device. Might sound like I'm being a twat, but I think it's a big waste of time.

QFT
What is this with Oddworld's apparent obsession with portable gaming? I never thought of Oddworld as a way to multitask or kill spare time.

Thats a good point. a new game under the AO name would be awesome. and not all touch based devices, I think Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus could really work on the DS perhaps 3DS
