I'm getting it when I try to go Back to the New Posts page from a thread.

Had one "No input file specified".

I also had the "forbidden" one and stuff.

Havoc 07-13-2010 07:55 AM

I just had 6 different error messages before I could finally sent my PM to Kastere. This is unacceptable!!! *Rage*

Trying to access UCP:

:

I had a whole wave of them earlier today, about the same time Nate had his, I think. Over several refreshes, pages weren't loading properly, with white backgrounds and images not appearing, interspersed with not loading at all and getting various error messages I didn't really look at. After a minute or two everything went back to normal.

Leading on from my last post, and a discussion with Max last night, is it possible that vBulletin and/or the server has a hard coded 8-bit limit on the number of simultaneous users?

Alcar 07-13-2010 04:58 PM

I doubt it - the errors are occuring during low-load periods as well. Once I've heard back from the server guys, I'll let you know and we can go from there.

If it isn't something easy to fix, I may have to see about moving to a different plan. One such might be the option to have our RAM increased/decreased on-the-fly relative to load - would cost a tad more, but if I recall not overly much.

I can't imagine that being the problem. There are what, 30 people logged in at the same time on a good day? If your hosting service can't even handle that I'd get the hell out of there and get a decent host.

The issue is due to a server hard limit of 1,000,500 files open at any one time. Don't forget we're on a shared server, so while that figure is ridiculously large, it isn't when you factor in how many other accounts are sharing the same server.

I've sought comment on how to move forward with this, and I'll keep you all informed.

That's my line.

The tech guys have cleared out what they refer to as "stale semaphores". I've never heard of the term and a quick search hasn't proven very informative so I can't elaborate.

However, they mentioned that if the errors still occurred to contact them again for further troubleshooting, so please keep posting the error messages in here if you receive any more.

Oh yeah I forgot you're with one of those 'we'll put 10.000 accounts on one server and make mad money' hosts. Makes sense in that case.

Dreamhost have been an excellent provider, even if we're on shared hosting. A hiccup every now and then is expected.

November 2010 will be our sixth year with them. Considering we switched between hosts 2-4 times in the vicinity of 18 months prior to moving to Dreamhost, the timeliness and competence of support, the price, the services, etc, I am more than happy with them :)

Semaphores are a concept in real time programming wherein multiple threads share common resources. Semaphores are flags that represent that a particular resource has been reserved and is being used. I presume that a stale semaphore is one that was reserved but never released, thus limiting access to resources later on.

I still haven't had any errors whatsoever, even when trying different features like New Thread or advanced search. I feel so left out
