I liked Princess Mononoke... But it also really depressed me. I started crying.

I love Slice Of Life comedy anime. I love the relaxing music and simple plots, I love the mannerisms and cute characters, and I love the effort put in to the environments.

I like Mecha action shows like Gundam. They're exciting and atmospheric, and they feature cool robots.

enchilado 02-16-2010 06:36 PM

I like hentai.

Oh same! Have you ever seen Moonlight Lady? I really enjoyed that, had great animation and fantastic music and a very beautiful cast.

What's your favourite hentai?

Come on troll, I'm calling you out.

MeechMunchie 02-18-2010 04:46 AM

Can we broaden the subject to include Manga comics as well? I have never seen an Anime movie I have particularly enjoyed*, but I do like various Manga.

*I probably have, and just forgot. Of course, the reason I forgot may be the same as the reason I enjoyed it - alcohol, tiredness, lack of oxygen...

Wings of Fire 02-18-2010 05:00 AM

I figured we were broadening it to that anyway, anime, manga, visual novels. It's all good.

Well yeah, it was a very Cathartic film. At least everyone except Moro and the boars had a happy ending.

but i am fucking far from being able to distinguish different animation styles, so i would have assumed that the left-hand picture was manga or something. i haven't seen any other manga than the clips shown in Kill Bill, and i thought those looked alright. i'd watch a film like that.

You're getting your terms mixed up big man, manga is just the Japanese version of comics that conforms to the style developed in late 19th century Japan. The anime sections of Kill Bill were simply done by an anime studio well known for excellent quality.

MeechMunchie 02-18-2010 05:08 AM

Well my favorite manga is definitely +Anima, but I am also a fan of Vampire Game. I occasionally read a bit of Rave Master, too.

Wings of Fire 02-18-2010 05:28 AM

If you like the style of manga I recommend Jojo's Bizarre Adventures, Monster or Beserk. Those are the three best manga I've ever read.

well fuck me, i didn't think i'd ever like a piece of anime. i must have been very stereotypical about it, because that stuff in Kill Bill looked decent. not for all the blood, but the realism/gritty style. all the anime's i've seen that have stated its anime haven't been to my tastes, but the ones that were pretty good and didn't tell you what genre it was, i assumed to be something other than anime.

so yeah, no more cunty remarks from me. or less so, at least.

I was in fact holding back tears... And I didn't get pissed at you. I just got pissed cos I knew it's what happen irl too. That's what pisses me off. What humans do to nature.
You just wanna remember it as me being pissed at you for some awkward reason that I'm not even going to bother with.

Anime simply stands for 'Japanese animation' of course they all follow similar historical trends and they all borrow from eachother but lumping them all in one category really is like saying all cartoons made in America use the same aesthetic.

Oh and yey for Serial Lain! ^^

Wings of Fire 02-18-2010 06:58 AM

Yeah, if you've posted in this thread you have an obligation to watch Serial Experiments Lain. It's only thirteen episodes long and it's jaw droppingly fantastic.

It's not that well known so it hardly ever gets taken down from youtube due to copyright reasons.

Alf Shall Rise 02-19-2010 07:48 AM

I'm a fan of anime, so far my favorites are probably Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Baccano! I'm currently watching Samurai Champloo, however, and I am enjoying it.

abe619 02-21-2010 06:22 AM

I used to watch naruto till about ep 69 in shippuuden (last summer), now i really hate, although the girls are still cute in my mind.
used to watch yu-gi-oh! on TV(about 5 years ago), but got bored of it quickly.
now all i see of anime are the pics and some of the vids in here on oddworld.
EDIT: also the 1st pic in post #11 by WOF looks familiar, cause it reminds me of one pic i posted about harumi eating someone drawn by some cool anime vore artist who is pretty famous in vore world.
enough about vore already.
even though "there is no body getting eaten ~Enchilado" i still think anime girls are hot.

Dipstikk 02-22-2010 05:59 AM

I like Lupin the 3rd, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist. Those are the only anime programs I can stand.

Most of it is boring, unreasonably typical tripe that doesn't so much try to break the traditional mold of anime (boy must succeed in his quest for greatness by training, sometimes with the help of his collectible ______s and hoards of horny, dominatable women which, as a feminist, really irks me to no end) as it does trying to create more variations around it, and while at least one of the shows I've listed does sort of follow that trend, it does it with an interesting premise. I love how FMA's director created the alternate universe it takes place in. Like The Last Airbender, it takes place on a different continent and takes inspiration from a different country where the people, like Airbender for America, are not part of the majority group. Not too many natural blondes in Japan.

I tried to get into shows like Gurren Lagan (oh, how I tried), but my god, I can NOT STAND MOST of what the Japanese find funny. Maybe it's that I grew up with American humor (and I'd have plenty to say about that, too), but giant sweat drops, falling down with the same force as an asteroid hurtling from space just because you're embarassed, IT'S NOT JUST UNFUNNY, IT'S IRRITATING, and they do it fucking constantly. I just... don't get the jokes. I was reluctant to list Trigun up there for the same reason. FMA has its moments, but they're few and far between, and the show's drama balances it out.

AND ANOTHER THING! I can't stand the translated scripts. They're just so... ugh! They don't often flow like normal english should flow. THAT is one of the biggest reasons for my inclusion of those four shows: the translated scripts are written well so that they don't grate on an english speaker's ears. Trigun's the exception because it's a western in space, but it can get pretty bad. I can't describe how bad some of these sound, I think Perfect Hair Forever did an excellent job parodying the bad writing with the King of All Animals' dialogue.

I mean, you have to feel bad for someone who's just tuning into SyFy's Anime block and getting an earful of "WE MUST CONTAIN THE YUGIO BARRIER OR ELSE THIS SHAKU WILL DISAPPEAR AND WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH HIT POINTS AND SHARDS TO COUNTERACT THE EVIL DONGWEAVER'S EVIL MAGIC, OHO!" Way to kick your potential audience in the nuts, Funimation.

I used to like DBZ and I probably would have liked Naruto as well when I was young and stupid and tolerated the shit I now loathe in anime.

MAGICAL GIRL EDIT: There's a lot of anime that I've seen that I'd be ashamed to place in the same category as the Narutard shit, like Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell and others like it. A lot that I haven't listed here. I often get caught thinking of anime as the same banal, chirpy kidshit that I usually catch these days, and I often forget that there's such great stuff out there. GOD, I LOVE STUDIO GHIBLI. OH, MISTER MIYAZAKI, YOU MAN YOU.

OANST 02-22-2010 06:27 AM

I watched The Cat Returns with Abbey on friday, and My Neighbor Totoro last night.

T-nex 02-22-2010 06:59 AM

The Cat Returns is awesome!! I don't care if it's kidsy or whatever. But I loved it.

Wings of Fire 02-22-2010 07:05 AM

Agreed, who the hell needs a moral message when you're having so much fun?

I'm watching Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha at the moment, it's pretty fucking awesome for a magical girl show.

And I love me my magical girl shows.

T-nex 02-22-2010 07:33 AM

I used to watch Sailor Moon during my early years when I watched the german channel(the only channel that showed animes) .... Both me, my sister and her friend would like fangirl over this show even though we didn't understand a word X_x.

Me and my sister slowly lost interest over time, and soon Pokemon would take over, which I completely loved for a few months before losing interest in that too. The downside in this was that I managed to buy a really huge, ugly egg-shaped pikachu, that cost like 55 bucks, before I realized what a terribly stupid fad it was. Now I'm stuck with it, and it keeps staring at me with it's blobby face... smiling all day.... singing and whispering gently, "you spent 55 bucks on me" all night long in my dreams.

Sometimes... I wake up sweaty and with tears in my eyes from the horrible nights.

Sailor Moon~ A really bad anime with a couple of really good bits. I still love it though.

OANST 02-22-2010 07:38 AM

What is wrong with you people? Are you still watching Rainbow Bright? Fuck.

Wings of Fire 02-22-2010 07:43 AM

I just adore the character archetypes used in shoujo (anime/manga made for young girls). Something about the sweetness and innocence of the characters really appeals to me.

Also lasers.

Jesus Christ. You are a pedophile.

:

One very common way to establish that a a male character is a nice guy (even if the niceness is hidden under a gruff exterior) is to give him an instinctive desire to be a big brother to smaller, younger, weaker or female characters. These other characters may be truly younger siblings, or they may be completely unrelated, or even older, and the tendency for males to act as their protector is the Big Brother Instinct. Female examples exist, though in a smaller proportion.

The Big Brother Instinct serves to explain why fan attraction to Moe tropes and devices can be an emotional, rather than sexual, response. There seems to be something inherently comforting to an awkward male about being looked up to by a younger girl for support. Therefore Moe can be wish fulfilment about taking a "big brother role" instead of about being a Love Interest (although that version is common too).

OANST 02-22-2010 08:11 AM

Dude. That makes it even creepier. Personally, I think that this sort of thing is beneath you. I couldn't imagine having so much time on my hands that I would ever feel inclined to watch a cartoon about magical prepubescent girls. And anything that you say in defense of it I will see as the ridiculous rationalizations of a budding weeaboo.

Wings of Fire 02-22-2010 08:20 AM

Suit yourself, but I think you're being a bit of a cultural imperialist by imposing your views on what's good and what's not to others and believing your view to be the objective truth. I like these sorts of shows (As long as they actually are good, which by the way most magical girl shows are NOT) and I do not believe it makes me any better or worse or it's beneath me or any of that shit. It just is.

So this is one of the few times I'm going to ask we agree to disagree because it's down to opinions. As long as you don't think I take anything sexual away from these sorts of shows I frankly don't give a damn on what your opinion of the kind of anime I watch is. It seems to be an intensely polarizing medium to begin with anyway.

OANST 02-22-2010 08:30 AM

It has nothing to do with the medium for me, but I think it does for you. I get the impression that if Rainbow Bright was a Japanese show you would watch it.
