I've been playing Crash Bandicoot a couple of times lately. It's so fun but oh so annoying when you die and have to go back a few levels because you haven't saved in a while.

I've never finished Warped because my disk was scratched and would freeze on that last motorcycle stage, in the last section of levels. Such a fun game though!

Ocarina of Time is the best gateway game, Majora's Mask IS my favourite but it's more of an acquired taste.

No, shut the fuck up. Ocarina of time is a retarded choice for first time players: I fucking hated it when I was a kid and even today it confuses me why people throw such a snit over it. I acknowledge how it pulled the industry onto its feet for console adventure type games, but it's still pretty meh. Why don't you go fall in a hole for even considering offering that as a recommendation. Shame, shame shame.

I do like MM though, oddly.

Taco, I recommend Wind Waker. It was the first Zelda game I decided to give two tugs of a dead dogs dick about and it was a bundle of fun. It's also a whole new shebang for the pile of story corpses that is the Zelda timeline.
Also give the Minish Cap a try, though I think I'm the only person who liked that.

Anyway, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is probably my favorite all time 'nostalgia rush' sort of game, with Earthworm Jim/2 and any of the SNES Megaman X's coming in a close second or third. Fuck I love all of those games.

Hazel-Rah 01-03-2010 01:15 AM

Wind Waker is the best Zelda game to date and it's so pretty. I played OOT when it was about a year old and already considered the best game ever, the hype ruined it for me. I did beat it though, twice.

Earthworm Jim was a good series lol, I even like the N64 game and have been playing it a lot these days.

I recently downloaded Spyro the Dragon on psn and it is awesome, it hasn't aged at all and it is SO much better than ANY of the Spyro games that came out after PS1. Very colorful, satisfying to play, and none of the stupid gimmicks that platformers suffer from these days *coughs* Sonic...

I guess that's like the fact that I don't like and never really got Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time is still great though, so you shut the fuck up.

I also liked Minish Cap, a lot.

AlexFili 01-03-2010 02:25 AM

Linear games can get boring though, I love the old-school sandbox games.

Phylum 01-03-2010 02:35 AM

My favorite games:

1. Jade Cocoon 2, for it's monster raising. It's a pity the final forms of all maus are so gay. ESPESSIALLY MR. BALLOON-FAGGOT TAMATOTCH, WHO WAS COOL UNTIL FORM 4, although he's still my favorite. My origional tamatoch is still my best Devine Beast

2. Kingdom Hearts, for it's battle system. I've only recently started to appreciate it fully.

3. Duke 3D

4. Quake 3

5. Quake 2

None of these games are particularly old, but are old enough.

Sonic 2 was the first game I played. I was about 5ish...

Excactly the same as me, I played it round a friend's house and got a Megadrive with sonic 2 shortly afterwards.

Other nostalgic games for me include:
Captain planet and the planeteers (Amiga)
Streets of rage 1&2 (Sega)
Eternal Champions (Sega)
The Revenge of Shinobi (Sega)
Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Pokemon Snap (N64)
The list goes on...

Sega= Megadrive

Wings of Fire 01-03-2010 02:50 AM

Pokemon Snap is a massively underrated masterpiece.

Jordan 01-03-2010 03:10 AM

I'm actually really jealous at people for growing up with/having an N64. I missed out on a lot. Oh well, when I get the money I will buy one.

Laser 01-03-2010 03:16 AM

No, no they are not.

Although depending in how late in my childhood you are own about because late 90s early 2000s had some amazing games. Planescape: Torment, Giants Citizen Kabuto, Dungeon Keeper 2 etc etc

Josh 01-03-2010 03:26 AM

Another game for me was Half Life. My brother and I gave names to all the Xen aliens.
Headcrab: Face Humper
Zombie: Zombie
Houndeye: Electric Sheep
Bullsquid: Croctapuss (Octapuss/Crocadile)
Controller: Fetus
Gargantua: Big angry thing that shoots fire
Ichthyosaur: Big Fish
Leech: Leech
Alien Grunt: Alien Soldier
Vortigaunt: Really anoying thing that shoots electricity
Nihilanth: Massive Baby
Snark: Exploding Rat
Tentacle: Loud Thing

MeechMunchie 01-03-2010 03:54 AM

Sonic and Knuckles was waaay better than Sonic 2. Also, I preferred DK1 to DK2.

I've still got a Mega Drive that I play regularly. And I also completely love Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc for no apparent reason. It just hit all the right buttons with me. Also, Morrowind.

Exactly the same at my end (Morrowind excluded - I have never played it).

I never had one, which is possibly why I don't really care for OOT.
Also, WoF, I never could get really engrossed in SM64. I even got all stupid-excited for the DS version, played it almost to the end and sold it.

Oh, and Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3. Especially 2, though.

Pokemon Snap is a massively underrated masterpiece.

Yes it is. It was the only game I really played on my N64. I had Ocarina Of Time but never got into it until I played Zelda collecters edition on the Gamecube. I think it was the kokiri forest and first dungeon that stopped me getting into it at first. I also played Pokemon Stadium sometimes using my Pokemon from Red.

Wings of Fire 01-03-2010 02:05 PM

I had Stadium 2 which I am reliably informed was heaps better.

I guess you feel a lot differently about a game if you've grown up with it, with the main reason for playing it nowadays being nostalgia. There are some games that I probably wouldn't still play today had I not played them as a kid.

It took me a while to get into Ocarina of Time, I found it too difficult and I gave up. I tried playing it again and then got into it quite quickly.

Wings of Fire 01-03-2010 04:32 PM

OTT had three rather stiff learning curves, it's not the Bottom of the Well or the transformation to Adult Link that stuck with me though. Oh no, it's walking out of Kokiri forest and wondering what that orange house was, then getting closer and realizing it was a nigh indestructible ranged enemy who made a creepy sound, then running away from him and getting to the castle...just in time to see the drawbridge close and night fall on Hyrule.

If you survive your night full of skeletons without any emotional scars then feel free to enjoy a slow paced game for the next few hours.

slig# 5719 01-03-2010 09:21 PM

Oh yes Hyrule:

"Come to our beautifull countryside. Live in the big city, or maybe the village is for you. We also have unique wildlife like the near indestrucible giant planty thing that will try to kill you. And lets not forget the nightlife, deformed glowey eyed skeletons jump out of the ground by your feet, trying to gouge your eyes out until morning. Why not have a great day out at one of the inaccesible temples complete with monsters. Here in Hyrule everything wants to kill you, we hope you visit soon."

Is Link really saving Hyrule? It seems everyone is just going to be killed by thier surroundings :p.

Exactly the same at my end.

I seriously don't know what it is specifically. It just mashes everything together perfectly: Proper, engaging action, humour, environment, and then it puts so many variations on the original formula that you never get bored. I mean, the majority of the game is made up of one-off experiences. And it has the most enjoyable end-game boss I know.

Wings of Fire 01-05-2010 09:34 AM

Virtua Cop 2 springs to mind, I remember the jetpack nazi brigade at the end of the Medium level warmly.

Houndeye: Electric Sheep

But of course.

Growing up, I played the shit out of my GameBoy pocket and later the Advance. I still have a lot of my games though not all of them. I remember we had a moving sale once and this chinese guy ended up walking away with like 10 of my games and my gameboy for like 15 bucks. I swear he used jedi mind tricks or some shit, because I don't remember his bargaining to be very convincing...

Whatever though. I had so many good times playing Metroid, Mario, Zelda, and Kirby on that thing. And all my friends had gameboys too so we used to link up and play 4-player which was actually really fun

lol check out this awesome Oddworld AO walk-through, I remember game brain! I had this tape and remember thinking how awesome it would be to live in a video-game. lol back then it was more of a moral choice of whether or not I SHOULD do it and escape a religious zealot of a mother leaving my family behind.

Xavier 01-06-2010 11:53 PM

Nice video, I never saw it, thanks for sharing :D
