I'm not exactly the most on-topic person myself, but we've been doing perfectly fine playfully spamming for months earlier in the year and that was all good and fun. It just kind of seems that the spam is turning very cliquey and hostile, also I object to people spamming in OD. I hardly post there, but that part of the forum is kind of our public face, and I think it should be kept as realistically pleasent as possible.

Also, when I joined I recieved a bit of a baptism of fire from yourself and Kastere on my very first two days, I was kind of expecting that and I felt good that I didn't let it beat me, that I was very quickly welcomed as a contributive member and that all the other members were very pleasent and accepting. If I joined the forums as they are now, I'd have left after a few days. Simple as.

There has been a bit of hostility about, and we could probably take that down a notch. I'm just so used to being the measuring stick for how hostile the forums are that when I'm not being hostile I feel like everything must be okay. In retrospect though, yeah, bitches be hatin'.

Wil 11-07-2009 09:16 AM

Of course the mods have been more lax on spam over the last five years because in the absense of any steady stream of Oddworld news we've only got our community to keep us coming back here. But whatever the state of on-topic discussion, there's always going to be a point where the spamminess reaches unacceptable levels of aggression and cliquiness. That line, uh, point has been crossed.

We are tempering recent escalation, not modding the community back to the stone ages.

Pilot 11-07-2009 09:35 AM

I don't think that anybody's being unreasonable here. I'm one of the biggest purveyors or pointless memes and random pictures that litter the threads in Off Topic, and the mods have never acted immaturely or been hostile about it in any way.

What I can't stand is purposefully telling a new member to leave or that they're not welcome. I'll just razz 'em quite a bit. We're here to have fun.

OANST 11-07-2009 10:50 AM

I don't like the fact that Necrum'd threads takes away from your post count. I'm not sure how that's relevant. I just thought I would mention it.

Havoc 11-07-2009 12:32 PM

Spamming can be fun, it can even be on-topic when you post a funny pun or picture at exactly the right time in a thread. Some people have that skill, some people don't.

And then of course there is the issue of bashing newbies into the ground, which is probably what sparked the mod team into a temporary state of 'ZOMG WE NEEDZ RULEZ!'. Cuz... I remember this same situation not to long ago... 6 months to a year I think? Yeah that went perfect, good work! Lets try it again.

Mac Sirloin 11-07-2009 12:35 PM

Wait, how did I give you a trial by fire, WOF?

Oh it was those PM's.

I forgot about that.

Anyway, this seems like a good idea. I'mma clean up my act.

I agree with this, when i joined the forums by my own admition i was an idiot. But it's better that people object at that point than wait until the person in question is a productive member (?) and then knock them sideways. It is humane and useful when you first join, but yeah we have been a little snappy. :p

well i'm predicting i'll get a week ban by next week, if not permabanned.

We don't do week bans any more. You stay banned until some of your infractions expire, which can take up to 3 months. It probably won't take that long though, unless you get infracted three times in the one day.

:

I can still berate people who join with the intent of only talking about zoophilia, right? If so, we have no problems.

That's fine. Especially if you record more videos.

Just to let you all know, I have a moral obligation to spam AIN's threads.

Just to let you all know, I have a moral obligation to kick your arse sideways if you do.

shaman 11-07-2009 04:36 PM

To be honest i've been anxiously hoping that there will be another media dramatisation of another member's post.

Do I need to reiterate my letter?

And I'm with Pilot. I even see mods pulling shit like that. I remember seeing Max once post the infamous "What?" after I got negrepped by Nate for it. But I won't get into the whole "preferential treatment" thing. Last time I remember that happening, there was a whole shit storm of petty internet drama that I don't want to go through again.

Nate 11-07-2009 04:59 PM

You posted immediately after someone else got infracted for spam. If Alcar had approved my suggestion of making stupidity a bannable offence, you would have gotten that instead.

Wings of Fire 11-07-2009 05:02 PM

I got an infraction after being here for less than two months for insulting a member a split second after Nate had simultaneously posted an order to leave said member alone, if there's preferential treatment here then I don't see it.

Except for Charlie getting away with rising to Ghost's trolling here, srsly dude.

used:) 11-07-2009 05:03 PM

Fools! No one can see my vision! They're all in the dark!

Yeah, I blatantly ignored what you laid down, and I was justly infracted, but seriously, I leave for one week and that's what happens?

Wil 11-07-2009 05:36 PM

Stop conflating reputation with infractions. Everyone's free to rep who they want for pretty much the reasons they want. It has no bearing on how close to being banned you are.

And get over yourself. You were away. Big deal. Anyone could have been away when this happened. It's not a result of either your absense or return.

And I'm with Pilot.

What? The OWF bit or the Ass Asylum bit?

We should also make Ham a bannable offense. Can we??

Leto 11-07-2009 10:00 PM

EVEN MORE REASON FOR MY PREVIOUSLY SUGGESTED: OWF FUCKING SPAM SECTION.

I'D STEP UP TO CURATE IT FOR THREADS THAT ARE TOO RETARDED. COME ON. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Sekto Springs 11-07-2009 10:01 PM

Leto wins the award for best idea. Ever.
Better yet, let us have free reign of all the threads in Necrum so we may spam ourselves flaccid!

C'mon guys, it's just like ejaculating into a corpse. Fun and safe. Sometimes the maggots tickle.

I already suggested this. NECRUM BURIAL GROUNDS. OANST is the perfect moderator for SPAM.

Plus, I can post endless youtube poops of Billy Mays infomercials, except with OANST heads and he won't mind.

Sekto Springs 11-07-2009 10:06 PM

Can we make Leto the moderator of SEX?

:

DO NOT SPAM IN THIS THREAD, I MEAN YOU STRIKE WITCH, AND YOU SEKTO AND YOU USED!.
Why, I never. How can you lump me in with Gabe? His spam isn't funny, mine is a testament to my well-traveled, bone dry wit. You typed it in red though, which means that I will, of course, take you more seriously.

My spam is hilarious. How do you think I got so much rep and negrep?

Is boasting your rep, even in a comical manner, an infractable offense?

Pilot 11-07-2009 10:17 PM

That's it Used. Check your PM inbox.

Leto wins no award, because he is only repeating an idea that's been floated all the way back to ClaireBear in 2004.

As for a spam section, it's never going to happen. Scientific experiments have disproved the hypothesis that initiating a Spam Amnesty Zone would draw all the spam away from the rest of the forum. If anything, the exact opposite happens; the SAZ ends up as a pussy boil on the otherwise flawless skin of the forums, spreading the infection out and causing a pox on all our houses. So to speak.

That's not only completely wrong, but stupid also.

Actually I've seen forums where it works pretty well, even though those forums are usually the jack-of-all-trades huge communities so I'm not sure if it would work here. Since we're small and stuff I guess we don't need it. Besides, the spam section has a tendency to draw in 4chan memes and such.

MA 11-08-2009 11:31 AM

you may have thought otherwise, but i am actually against the SPAM section idea. plus post counts would fucking rocket for people that are/could be potential MS's, buggering up the concept of the rep system (unless post count wouldn't count in SPAM). and bots or whatever the fuck they are that come here to advertise loaning firms and what have you, using key words, could potentially lure that particular market of member, which you may not want. and 4chan members, the illiterate ones. and its gay.

zoophilia - PLEASE DON'T JOIN JUST TO POST IN HERE, WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK.

Havoc 11-08-2009 08:24 PM

Well yeah if you would leave a spam section completely moderated, that would happen. Just like that would happen to just about any other part of a forum without moderation.

With all due respect, MarsMudoken, this isn't OD or FC. Potty mouths, whilst certainly not being encouraged, are to be expected. You can't expect other users to abide by your social niceties ;).

Hobo 11-09-2009 04:54 AM

Seriously, Wings of Fire. Stop moderating these forums for us.
