That's because you hear about far more female dogs than donkeys nowdays.

Anyway, no British celebrity/presenter would ever dream of saying ass when arse is so readily available.

Anonyman! 03-23-2009 02:52 PM

Why most people do it? Because it's cool, probably?
Why I do it? Typing cuss words makes me feel dirty.

Fuck you, Burning Man.

Where's the emergency, Citizen?

Are you my wife? She wants me to do that, but I love it too much. Stop supporting her. Support me, you bastard.

Yes. Yes I am. Now remember, I know where you live. And where your precious bar is.

Mutual Friend 03-23-2009 04:24 PM

It lubricates language. Which is perfectly natural and healthy.

Slog Bait 03-23-2009 04:50 PM

I grew up being taught that there are no such thing as cuss and swear words, only words that can harm people mentally.

Knowing this, I grew fond of those words...

Bullet Magnet 03-24-2009 02:10 AM

Language does not need lubrication! It's slippery enough as it is.

How long have you been keeping this from me? I'll issue the divorce.

On topic, I believe that swearing has a time and place.

Old Man Jenkins has gone got himself stuck in a tree during a Vietnam flashback, and he keeps shootin' anyone who gets near him! What're you gonna do?

Hobo 03-24-2009 09:07 AM

Have I?

AlexFili 03-24-2009 09:35 AM

I've always liked Eminem's songs. I'm not sure why exactly I don't mind the swearing but I think I like the way he uses it. Apart from John Cena's music, I'm not very fond of swearing or rap music in general. I guess it just depends on the context really.

OddjobAbe 03-24-2009 09:38 AM

Try "The Girls of Porn" by Mr. Bungle (sorry, Kastere). They use cuss to add to the comical atmosphere, and best thing about it is that it isn't rap. It's a fusion of rock and funk. Very fun.

This can be solved while delivering a green message to the children. I will simply hug the tree until the flames spread to its trunk, and watch as Old Man Jenkins is returned safely to the ground once the carbonisation of the tree's wood compromises its structural integrity.

I know. No one yells faggot like he does. I just melt whenever I hear him say it.

Facsimile 03-24-2009 02:13 PM

I don't have to swear. I can turn it off whenever I want. I don't swear at my parents' home, or when I'm out supermarket shopping. I do, however, when I'm around my friends, because they're just words and the very fact that they're 'taboo' makes them enjoyable to use, just like other faux pas of this nature, eg. dead baby jokes.
Not to mention to exaggerate anger. How satisfying is it to yell the initial burst of 'fu' and conclude it with a violent 'ck' when you're in a bad mood?

Very.

Very satisfying.

I noticed in today's newspaper that they printed the term 'shitstorm' with no editing. Not even a few asterisks. I thought that was a good thing.

Are there restrictions on what newspapers can print?

squeak117 03-25-2009 02:26 AM

But you see, there's no denying that it is the usual political shitstorm.

I swear by force of habit. I can switch it off when my family is present, but any other time I literally can't control myself. I was actually talking to a friend who has the same problem today about my incredible need to just stop this stupid habit.
I tried once in grade ten where I punched myself every time I swore. That didn't work... now I just enjoy pain.

AlexFili 03-25-2009 04:03 AM

ShitStorm Brewery :D

I really like the comedy stylings of Tim Minchin. Not only is he a really talented musician but his lyrics are very funny and quite provocative. I don't personally mind what he says that much, but I can see how some people could take offense. I like the Avenue Q songs as well.

I'm not sure, but I think it's self-regulated.

AlexFili 03-25-2009 04:13 AM

Usually newspapers censor the 'f' and 's' word. If not totally than partial censorship such as f**k. I still can't believe that company got away with writing the word FCUK on all of their products. Oh well...

That's the exact same as me when I'm at school or with my mates I can't help but when I'm with my family my mind just knows not to do it.

It is a bit strange. Whenever I'm forced to swear in front of my dad (we quote movies a lot), it just seems really awkward. I suppose it's a good thing my mind decides that swearing at my parents is a bad thing.

Wings of Fire 03-26-2009 06:59 AM

Oddly enough I swear far more often in front of friends and families (Sometimes in front of friends family's) than I do online.

Online I have fucking standards.

Why? What's offensive about the term 'fcuk'?

T-nex 03-26-2009 05:52 PM

I love "fcuk" perfume... It's my fave =). Have such a nice smell. My friend said he saw the text written "Don't make us say it" in the stores or something. Pretty funny.

Anyway irl, swearing just comes naturally. I was never raised not to swear... Like, whenever I was at other peoples' homes, and they treated swearing as something grave, It didn't really get it that much.
It also helped relieve tendion and make a statement much more intense. Only recently has my dad started correcting swear-words. Probably cos he had his gfs' kids around.

Now it just comes naturally, and I really think it's not that big of a deal. maybe I'm wrong, I wouldn't know. I'm very liberal in my views.

I considered swearing a cardinal sin until around age twelve. These days, it's like my smoke break. Sometimes when I'm particularly exhausted or pissed off, I go outside and bitch the fuck out of the air. Or I just do it for fun.
