Stranger might be a little bit lower on the morality scale than Abe (stealing money from that opple farmer), but both are generally good natured.

Stealing from Beek? You crook.

Stranger is another aspect of Oddworld that was not meant to be in relation to the previous games. The only similar things were Vykkers and Fuzzles. But for the most part it showed a completly new part of Oddworld. I think Lorne's decision of going with this idea was very interesting and dareing. However I feel that Stranger in a way was more of an expierment so to speak, to see how everybody would react to a completely different side of Oddworld we diden't know about. I think the response was mixed.
Since Munch was a flop this had to be made in order to say to us that there is more to Oddworld than Abe and Mudokins and Munch. And yes, this was granted, (a radical move), however I think in its own light it worked. To me its a bunch of mixed feelings about the game. But I will not dwell over it, I look forward to the future of Oddworld indeed. Paramiteabe...:fuzblink: |
Everyone's saying that the only similarity between SW and the other games are Vykkers and Fuzzles, but I disagree. If you look close enough there are loads of other things, such as the 'Beware of Slogs' signs (though without the writing) in various places like the sewers and near the Grubb temple; the airships that carry Wolvarks are very similar in design to the ones in MO, and there's that class of Wolvarks called 'Slog Handlers'. Then there's things like the Mongo River and Elum's Spine (the mountain range on the map). The list goes on.
I myself like SW and think it was a good idea of OWI to make a game in a different region. If they kept reusing Abe, things would eventually get boring. Besides, they kept the same basic storyline elements (native world struggling against industrial world) and to me that's all that matters. |
Not to mention the Outlawz in Packratz Junkyard, who mention Paramite Pies and Scrabcakes.
The stranger also mentions Slog's on numerous occasions on his gamespeak button, throughout the game. The best "There should have been more OW in Stranger" I've ever heard was Max's idea of having Outlawz riding Elums. <3 |
That and your idea about replacing Grubbs, Wolvarks and Oktigi with Mudokons, Sligs and a Glukkon.
|
I've grown up alot since then.

I think that, what some of you may be forgetting is that the Oddworld series is, first and foremost, a series of video games. If we look at it from that point of view, surely you can see how different SW is compared to the others. It's genre could be described as a first- person shooter. Now, forget about re-using characters such as Abe, and think about how you feel about the style of gameplay...no Gamespeak for one thing, which i always enjoyed...

Winning formula's don't last forever unfortunately. You need change to sustain an interest.

"I slapped Jo Momma so hard, my hand hurts" :) I love that line.

Ah, so that’s how they put him in the game. Greenscreen.

I was just impressed by how close their costumes are. I found it completely by accident.

You actually remembered what all the outlaws looked like?

It does, doesn't it. |
I think most of us do.

The Good, The Bad and The Odd. (Remembers the Simpsons "Paint your wagon" song)
At first glance Stranger's Wrath does look a lot different to previous Oddworld games. However there is a lot of similarity in the nature of the story, the humor and the characters. The term 'outlawz' is a bit corny, but at the same time, I've seen a lot worse in terms of creativity prior to this. I prefer having more suitable characters depending on the environment, rather then just shoehorning in the Glukkons and Sligs. Sekto fits the villain's chair quite adequately and leaving out the industrial characters was a good way of trying to explore new surroundings and mechanics. Stranger's Wrath was pretty much one of the best Xbox-exclusives, and it definitely feels like a perfect definition of a great game. I'm so surprised that there are so many ladies that play this game. Compare that to how many play Halo 3 / Gears of War ;) |
WHAT!
Oddworld in the days of PS1 was very populor! Sure not as populor as Crash or spyro but AO and AE are and always will be Populor Anyways... i didn't like Stranger's Wrath at all and i agree Why did they make it?! MO wasn't crap, yeah it was well....diffrent, i wich they brought out Munch's Exoddus :

This complaining at Strangers' superior strength is surprising, in a way. In the art book, the Stranger section at the end discussed the previous thing about having Oddworld's character physically weak, but powerful in other ways. A good theology was worked for Stranger into his game, considering it's necessity after Munch's huge flop. Whilst Stranger is physically much more capable than Abe or Munch, he initially lacks their morals and care for others that Abe and Munch start out with. Where Abe and Munch find 'power' in certain forms and the ability to achieve their goals, Stranger starts realising about and caring for those around him (namely the Grubbs), and having the power to do something about it.
Stranger's Wrath was, of course, needed for a sort of last gasp, for some money to try to rebuild from where they'd ended up, hence EA being the publisher also. Also why it has thus taken such a long, gradual process. Anything else has been mentioned already. |
