Oooh! :fuzsad: I see my topic was removed about the Steam launch, was I a bit slow again?

Anyway I downloaded both games last night and I have to say it is excellent, super fast and easy too!

Identical from the demo you can download from the Official Oddworld website if you wanna see first, except the Steam versions work fine on XP!

Going to try setting it up with a gamepad next see how well that works...

Edit: Gamepad test went well I set them up almost exactly like the Playstation controller except in AO you have to use Run and Sneak to use Gamespeak and in AE the Gamespeak is not in the same order you would expect... bit annoying.

Incidentally...
I have a vague memory of knowing about it before. Did Lorne mention it in an interview or podcast with some magazine or website or something?
Or did one of the guys in on Nate's interview mention it on the forums?

No, I did mention it way back. I think I didn't mention the possibility of MO and SW because I couldn't remember at the time whether that was on or off the record.

Steam Gets odd

Steam the online source for video games sorta like gametap, and its involved with the orange box, they put up Abe's oddysee and exoddus for 10 dollars each. I dont know if the version of theirs is any different from the original, but stil its pretty cool that people can get it now for 10 bucks easy rather then always using ebay

DarkHoodness 08-30-2008 07:34 AM

EDIT 3:

Steam is Win. :D Hopefully people who maybe played the original Abe games years ago and forgot about them will re-discover the magic all over again. :) Perhaps the games will even get some new fans. . . Actually it'll be interesting to see where they go from here and if the re-release will make them even more famous.

It's a bit weird how they're only available in English though considering they were translated into other languages during their original release.

If they've been tested thoroughly, has anyone noticed any difference between the Steam versions and the original CD versions yet?

Bullet Magnet 08-30-2008 04:24 PM

I've never played these games on PC before. What differences from the PSX versions are there that I should know about? Can I make the resolution true and not full screen? Are the controls tricky? Are the graphics different?

GlacierDragon 08-31-2008 03:23 AM

I must admit I never expected this. I really want to download them, but I don't think it said they work on Vista.

I bought them but I haven't yet downloaded them. I'll have downloaded them in about a week, so I'll let you know if they work on Vista.

If not, that's my loss, I 'spose. At least I'll have the ability to move them across to computers with XP... I think.

Nate 08-31-2008 05:12 AM

Alcar has installed his original copy on Vista and says that it works. I see no reason why this should be any different. I'm sure it's not 100% reliable but there's a good chance it may work.

OddjobAbe 08-31-2008 10:13 AM

You know, it's nice to see a re-release, but I'm pissed off that it's on Steam. Really, Steam is reliable, but I don't like the prospect of paying once a month for something I'm only gonigto use occasionally.

Wil 08-31-2008 11:04 AM

What are you talking about? Steam is free and the games are one-time payments.

OddjobAbe 08-31-2008 11:10 AM

I must have read the agreement wrong. I'm pretty sure it said something about a monthly subscription unless it was on about a separate feature (I never read all the agreemant).

Nate 09-01-2008 03:20 AM

I think you're getting confused with GameTap.

gwacisback 09-01-2008 09:22 AM

It works fine on vista(AO, AE), also steam is free. There is no monthly fee, you buy it and then play it.

SNegrea 09-05-2008 02:50 AM

Does the new versions have more colors than the 256 colors in AO? If so, then that counts as a improvement towards the graphics too.

mlg man 09-05-2008 06:29 AM

it doesn't, sadly, its just been put on a server for download, no change, its there, bang! thats it!

DarkHoodness 09-06-2008 12:46 PM

Something that may be of interest. I was e-mailng Matt Lee about sending fanart to OWI, and we had a small conversation about the Abe games being on Steam. He said that they didn't do any marketing or advertising to see how the games "would take off via existing fans picking up on it". And guess what? The games lasted almost a week on Steam's Top Seller's list (they're not there anymore though 'cause more stuff was released). :) I think that counts as being pretty successful. :D

EDIT: BTW, people here shouldn't be dissapointed about there not being any improvements to the games over their original release versions - It's really amazing that they're on Steam at all. Just think - No longer are they hard to find and rare. Instead they are now incredibly easy to purchase. :) And anyone with 'net access and a credit/debit card can buy them.

Ain't that amazing?

Jordan 09-06-2008 01:53 PM

Yes, it definately is something to be proud of. A couple of games that were released years back are being remembered like that today, being above most of the modern ones.

the Exoddus 09-06-2008 09:47 PM

its nice that thay did this but it its so buggy it lags at times the music skips and Abe gets discolored for me like half way threw Abe's exoddus all thay need to do now is get strangers wrath on pc i would pay top doller for that

sam250 09-13-2008 07:35 AM

If it's really as buggy as people say, then I'm dissapointed. Is a patch possible, in the future?

Another thing I was sondering abuot is the manual- do you get a digital version of that with the download. If not, again, dissapointment.

Finally, a colour and reslution boost would have been nice, but otherwise I am overjoyed that these games are finally being released online, and I can't wait for MO and SW too (I assume that if what DarkHoodness said is true, about the games being in Top Sellers list with zero advertising, then the games have therefore sold enough for it to be worth it to release the other two).

Wil 09-13-2008 09:03 AM

Regarding bugs, both games run absolutely problem-free on my Windows XP. True I haven’t run through the game from start to finish, but performance seems completely unchanged to me. Even the noclip modes work as before.

If the manual is there, I haven’t found it, but Lorne wants the foreign-language manuals for the foreign-language Steam releases, so he wants them available.

Graphical boost would have been nice, but then they’d have to go back to all sorts of different original data and completely recompile the game, and that’s not necessary. The graphics are completely fine.

Havoc 09-13-2008 10:12 AM

I find it a bit weird that they would release a 12+ year old game and not even make it compatible with today's systems. There were some serious bugs in the old versions on more advanced systems.

Nate 09-13-2008 06:02 PM

Isn't the english manual available on ow.com? Perhaps they want to put the foreign language ones up too.

DarKo 09-16-2008 04:33 AM

Elo follow me ok!
Yo sup figured I might as well register at this forum. I logged on steam and saw the classic PS1-games available so ofc I bought both of them. Just wanted to tell the guys that hesitates; buy them! ;) They both work great on windows xp, the only thing I miss is my PS1 game pad. :'(

Welcome to the forum :D

I agree that I always prefered to use a gamepad then the keyboard, but it's only a minor problem. I'm more annoyed at the lack of a manual, and the minor bugs, but if Lorne is as good as his word then we should get a patch/update in the near future.

voodoo 09-17-2008 05:39 PM

Im wondering . is it possible to pay for games on steam with pounds because all i see are dollars

Xavier 09-17-2008 09:56 PM

I think it does it automatically... I know I paid in euros...

DarKo 09-18-2008 12:02 AM

If it is true, then yea. That is a major glitch.

BP's for stating the obvious.
