Hi Abe Babe!
I believe I joined around the end of the resulting flamewars but since I never left Fancorner if I could help it I was pretty much oblivious to the whole thing at the time. I can't really judge whether Alcar the Usurper was right to kick her or not (though for the sake of comedy it's more entertaining to see Alcar as an evil tyrant). Either way a lot of people at the time chose to leave, and a lot thought of leaving, possibly just for the sake of concience. It really was sad; OWF lost a lot of good members because of that. Gotta ask Dark Hood, why did no one think of creating another forum to replace the Glass Asylum without Sydney when she dropped you all? |
Middlesboogie and a few others did, it was called The Stoneage Respority or something like that (I can't quite remember). Then it's name changed to something else. Then it became Teh Shed. It was a success on her part - Many members stayed for a time, then it kind of went its own way and after a while it became very, very quiet. Not many people knew about it at the time of its creation (there wasn't any way of telling them as TGA had been nuked by the time it was created), or they'd lost interest in foruming after the crap with OWF and TGA, so not many people joined.
Maybe I can ask her to tell me more about it later. EDIT: Oh, and Welcome Back, Abe Babe. :P |
:
For those of you who don't know, signing your posts is idiotic and I can only assume narcissistic. It already says your name. We know who you are. Do you think signing it adds extra weight to the statement? It doesn't. It just makes me irritable. |
Alcar...
|
AAAHHHHHH! STOP IT!
oanst..... |
Now you've done it, OANST.
Bullet Magnet... |
Oh right, I remembered wrong. :P The Stoneage Respority and Teh Shed were set up by friends of Rettick and Middlesboogie for the sake of having a forum to hang out in, but it just turned out that a few people from TGA went there after TGA blew up.
Dark Hood... |
Zorro.......

When I first read Abe babe's post, I thought it was some sort of joke on Alcar's part, and that the post singing was meant to give him away.
I've never seen anyone else sign there post (except for here of course), which is explanatory, because, as OANST said, post signing is kinda dumb. Anyways, back on toppic, that explains alot DH, I still don't get pilot's plot in all of this. And there was another creator of OWF wasn't there? Along said with Sydney, or maybe it's just me. |
Hehe, I used to sign my posts with "-DH" as some sort of weird trademark or so. 'Course, there wasn't much point. So I stopped.
I thought Abe Babe had returned, but I didn't really think much about it. Eh. What happened to her anyway? Back on topic. As far as I remember though, Pilot didn't really have much of a role. I think he was the one who delivered the message about Sydney's booting, but it's a bit of a mystery. |
Abe Babe is the mysterious admin, and we actually owe her. She owns a very very large Final Fantasy fan forum (hooray for illiteration!) and so doesn't really take the time to come here much. but she still has the grace to make us the occasional forum skin.
-Splat. |
I'll drink to that!
|
I know who she is and what she does and all (Alector even phoned her once), but eh, if she's busy with other forums it explains why she doesn't come here often. Still not a good enough reason to not drop in and say "Hi" from time to time, though. :P
|
I used to make Syd real mad.
Me and Morgo both. It was fun. I miss the chat room. Abe Babe... |
I've only used the monacher 'Pilot' on one other forum I was on years ago, and while googling for some information on that I have to say I was surprised to find this!
I guess I should say something here, even though this thread has been dead a couple of months; just for posterity and to 'solve the mystery' :pipe: I remember back when all this went down in 2001-2002.... the administratorship at that time was both Sydney and Abe Babe. Sydney was the original creator or 'founder' of the forum and Abe Babe (now known as 'Cloverfield,' respectively,) was made co-administrator by Sydney. All this was done well before I ever showed up on the Oddworld scene and also this forum was well established before I showed up. It was an August 2001 visit to the Oddworld Inhabitants studio I made (detailed in the "November 2001 Fan of the Month" feature on oddworld.com) that kind of made my name known in the Oddworld Forum circle, and in short time I became friends with both of the Administrators of the forum. About the time Munch's Oddysee came out, I was put in charge as a moderator for a then-new feature of Oddworld Forums called "Spoiler Forum." This was a forum that was put in place so that any of the folks who had inside info about Munch's Oddysee or folks who have played it would be able to discuss 'exclusively' in this Spoiler Forum without 'ruining it' for those who haven't played the game yet. It was about this time Kristen and I became good friends and also the time when Sydney seemed to be..... I don't know... getting 'weird'.... he was starting to become spurious in his administrative duties, disappearing for lengths of time and exuding a strong insecurity during the times that he did appear--- he was up and banning members for (honestly I don't remember what) but it was the opinion of the other forum 'leaders' that his actions were completely inappropriate, as his bannings were not discussed at all with the other 'leaders' and he seemed to be becoming a tyrannical dictator. Peter (Alcar) will remember this as he was then relatively new on the scene too (just made moderator if I recall correctly) when all this was happenning. That was the beginning of the whole thing. what was ultimately decided was that Sydney should be taken out of a position where he could ban members at the drop of a hat that seemed to be doing nothing to deserve it. Kristen, having administrator powers, very reluctantly made the 'demotion' and I agreed to write the 'notification' If that 'notification' is still in the archive somewhere I don't know but reflecting upon it, it was incredibly mellodramatic, lol! Kind of like 'this is the biggest issue in our lives.' :p What I didn't know at the time was that Sydney (a man) was going through quite a few psychological and physical changes at the time, and looking back into the propaganda that was getting thrown back and forth at the time, by myself included--- I admit I used this information 'loosely' in an attempt to discredit him. Well, 'he' is now a 'she' and became so when he branched off with some of his/her friends to start the forum The Glass Asylum It was all an experience in 'taking things too far'-- none of that really mattered and being the kid I was (I was 18 or so) it was the thing that most mattered in the world it seemed. Even today I wish I could go back and say sorry to Sydney- I did some things that were very hurtful and potentially cruel out of inexperience, naivety and insecurity. Today I commend him as it took a lot of courage to take the path he chose and I lend him a LOT of credit. I mean, it took years before I 'came out of the closet' about being gay myself (probably new info here) but it's nothing compared to what he followed through with. Today I can appreciate reflecting on the 'younger days' chalking it up as 'experience,' and certainly even more appreciate everyone's differences and challenges which make us all unique individuals. I've excluded a lot of unnecessary drama here but this can serve as the 'cliff note' version of what happened. :) |
thanks for the very interesting insight. :)

Anyway thanks for the info, I have to admit I was a bit out of the loop during this whole crisis. |
Yeah, I was just thinking; do you think that being gay attracts people to leadership on this forum or do you think the forums somehow affect us all in that way?
And if it's the latter, has Alcar put in some sort of Flash feature that strobes subliminal man-on-man porn to all members? |
This goes some way to explaining some of the things I didn’t understand and was too polite/scared of Peter to enquire about.
Admin CP Announcement logs don’t seem to go back to before mid-2003, so I don’t think anything like that is archived. There are some threads still lurking about, and yes, it was all very operatic and flamboyant and I was enthralled. I took Sydney’s side, and was ‘recruited’ to TGA by Gluk Schmuck (Tom, who is currently my housemate at university), who was lurking in OddChat with the nick Vorpal. Remembering some of the counter-arguments, it seemed to me that Sydney was justified in banning the particular members, even if he jumped the gun a bit. Under Tom’s guidance, I did try to drag Xav to TGA, but he wasn’t following the dispute, and got promoted to General Discussion (as Oddworld Discussion was formerly known) mod in my absence. Didn’t take me long to need my dose of Oddworld chat, though, and I came back and soon joined Xav’s side. I kept up with TGA and its replacements for a while, but lost interest when their activity dried up. My biggest sense of loss is that of the pre-vBulletin Oddworld Forums. Meh. |
I never knew that Oddworld Forums had such a "rich" history full of "interesting" characters :D
Kudos! |
Well, it's nice to have some clarification. Thanks! :)
I want to hear about "Sligslinger's Rebellion." |
:
Willickers! |
:
Anyhoo, it seems Abe Babe can now be crowned the only straight to have graced admin-ship. Alcar... |
On the other hand, she likes American football.
|
:
You bastard. |
:
I knew there was a reason that I was never made a mod. No other reason is logical. None. Nuhuh. |
There are straight Mods :p
It's just the gay admins. Alcar... |
Christ, that all happened along time ago. I can't really remember anything out of it since I was like 9 at that time but I got the general impression everybody was tense over something. Stupid pre-puberty ignorance.
Anyway, I've done a bit of backtracing myself and I have to say this thread cleared up a lot of things I'd been wondering while looking over some history. Meech may be a necromancer of dead concerns, but it sure was intresting to read this. (P.S. I am afraid for my sexuality) |

Holy crapoly I guess it wasn't until just this moment I now realize what a 'queer' *cough* history it's been. I guess the fact that I was never actually an administrator puts to rest the age old conspiracy that I was looking to 'usurp' Sydney from the beginning. I admit I liked him (her) a lot back then because he had this air of being calm and collected, and was always very intellectual. I remember there was all sorts going around that I was 'controlling' Abe Babe's mind or some such nonsense. At least I recall that being discussed at one point; it's been a long time. It was so serious back then but now it's just funny. So much drama, so many sleepless nights... and I was in high school for christ sake- whenever I got sleepy I just went to school. :p Sexual orientations aside, something I'm pretty impressed with is how this forum has become what I see to be an 'open venue;' without censorship and without becoming 'out of control' - I see lots of 'open' discussion here (yeah and the smut can get eyeball deep) but I think that's very cool that this has stayed together and is still active! |
