Correction, it's 3 months, Rex. Regardless, though, infractions should generally be 2 months for minor infractions and 5 for moderate ones. Larger ones should warrant 2 week bans.

Mac Sirloin 08-31-2007 08:41 PM

But there are so many that are patient enough to simply sit there for 2 weeks just...waiting, I did once (Pathetically.)

I think a month long ban might not do it even, too many people just pop up and douchebag-fu the forums.

2 months is great, but only for stupid people.

If smart people who undertsnad they screwed up and are honestly (as honest as one can be over a text and image interface.) about it, then 2 week bans are fine, and usually they go nuts because of the morons.

No, thats not a shot at anyone. shut up.

Nate 08-31-2007 11:11 PM

For PV's sake, I will explain. Infractions operate as follows:

:

Inappropriate Language - 5 points, 14 Days
Insulted Other Member(s) - 5 points, 3 Months
Poor Grammar & Spelling - 5 points, 1 Month
Signature Rule Violation - 5 points, 1 Month
Spammed - 5 points, 3 Months
Thus if you spam three times in three months you'll reach the 15 point limit and face a week's banning. If you use inappropriate language, those point disappear after two weeks.

Carnix 09-01-2007 12:42 AM

I didn't know there was a system. I just thought that you guys gave out infractions whenever you saw fit. But since there's a system like that everything seems a lot more fare.

Spirrow 09-01-2007 11:34 AM

Wait a minute. Isn't an infraction a ban? Gee, I thought it worked like:
Mod gives you a warning that's not an infraction>Mod gives you an infraction that's a temprorary 1 or 2 week ban. And from there it goes on.

Nate 09-01-2007 08:10 PM

No, a warning is just that; a mod telling you to shape up otherwise an infraction will come. Infractions are official warnings that get logged as points. And if you get 15 points you get a banning.

my infraction doesn't prevent me doing anything though! So what was the actual point of my infraction?

Hobo 09-02-2007 02:40 AM

This thread is idiotic. In before the lock!

Make a sticky explaining the infraction system with the details Nate mentioned.

alf's brother's mate 09-02-2007 02:44 AM

well i just wanted to find out what you guys thought. thats all.

THE POINT is that if you get two more, you will be prevented from doing everything.

Wil 09-02-2007 04:09 AM

I would just like to register my annoyance with the use of the word ‘infraction’ to mean ‘reprimand’. Infractions are committed by the guilty party, i.e. you lot. vB has recently improved its whole scripting of these things, but the terminology they use is confusing and tiresome.

I gave you a reprimand for expressing yourself in a way that thoroughly vexed me because of its callousness and derogatory wording. It may not carry a punishment that affects your abilities to participate on Oddworld Forums, but it brings you a step closer to receiving such a penalty.

Incidentally, I was always aware that I was arguably being harsh with my judgement (despite seeking permission from higher powers before issuing the reprimand), and since then I have glossed over several particularly spammy posts by you, choosing just to delete them, to even things out slightly. However, should your superfluous messages continue appear in Oddworld Discussion discussions, you will be hearing from me.

Hope that clears things up. :)

*sigh*
Don't confuse the issue any further Max. Yes, the term we use may not be the official dictionary definition, but until Alcar/vB change the terminology 'infraction' is what it will be called.

Wil 09-02-2007 04:14 AM

BS. I can’t give an infraction. That’s the terminology that is confusing. I’m proposing an alternative that makes sense to begin with.

Alcar 09-02-2007 04:50 AM

Hey, they're [vBulletin] based in Britain. It's your education system. Take it up with them :p

Alcar...

Wil 09-02-2007 04:58 AM

My education system? Unless the guilty people went to my school, it has nothing to do with my education. Besides, I’m not the one with a vB account. You actually pay them, you’re the one to raise the issue with them.

Alcar 09-02-2007 03:54 PM

They went to a school somewhere in England, and I can only suspect that it was your education system that failed them :p

In other words, it's staying at infractions unless vBulletin decides to change it.

I propose changing the word infraction to the word Bitchslap. Imagine the fun we'll have!

"If you spam one more time I'm going to bitchslap you!"

"I bitchslapped that guy because he spammed..."

"You have recieved a bitchslap for spamming. This bitchslap will expire in three months."

Ah good fun.

Alcar 09-03-2007 03:09 PM

I'd be willing to put in the hours and change everything to bitchslap.

Alcar...

Mistress of Oddworld 09-03-2007 04:02 PM

I think they are COMPLETELY fair, without them, who knows what our forums would become?

"If you keep posting that cocky crap, I'm going to bitchslap you back to Africa!"

How's that, lady?

alf's brother's mate 09-04-2007 08:10 AM

"dear ........... , you have recieved a bitchslap at oddworld forums. This Bitchslap is worth 50000000 points. You are permanently banned from using a computer. further infractions may cause you to be banned from going to bed. please pick your "Moderator offending" comments more carefully

All the best, oddworld forums.

hehehe.....

Havoc 09-05-2007 03:53 AM

See Alcar, everyone is in support. Now do it! :D

Alcar 09-05-2007 04:04 AM

As humorous as it would be, a level of professionalism must be maintained :p

Alcar...

alf's brother's mate 09-05-2007 09:45 AM

i agree. *sobs* but it would be fun though.
sorry max for the spammy posts, and i assure you that i will do my best to stop myself.

Al the Vykker 09-05-2007 03:19 PM

Why do people care about this so much?

Havoc 09-07-2007 05:25 AM

Because it's the internets?

alf's brother's mate 09-07-2007 07:16 AM

or we are sad and weird little people who live hunched over in front of a computer screen, and don't have a social connection or relation to the outside world.

Majic 09-07-2007 10:20 AM

Of course infractions are unfair. Moderators here have a long-standing history of being biased bastards. Only, the people who get warned tend to be the people others force themselves to tolerate. So sure, the system is corrupt, and I might still be in bed with Peter's Peter, but it staves off total flame wars. "Infractions" (what the hell happened to calling them warnings?) are the lesser of two evils, in a sense.
