I don't think the issue here is having "too many smilies". The users deserve to be able to choose the smilies they want to use. Hardly like a few extra smilies is going to eat up all your bandwidth.

I doubt they will eat up our bandwidth. But a forum is comprised of more than that simple issue. There are aesthetics. Too many smilies, and they don't get used. There's no point, and the serve for no reason.

Hm. No offence, but I don't think Death's are BETTER than the ones we have here already, just different. If you want new smilies, there's nothing to stop you putting them on your own site and hosting them from there, like Dragadon/Sl'askia and myself did when we had made our own. The whole purpose of a smilie was originally just to show you weren't being serious and tirggering a flame war in the first place.

I must agree with Teal. And besides, they're just smilies. All they need to do is express an emotion. I don't like being at silly forums where there are overly used, colorful little teletubby style things. The grey ones, i admittidly like. But, as Teal said, you can easily just link to them...

Gawd... quit yer complaining. I'll alter the current smilies so that they haven't got the white background thing around them ... but if you want colored ones, you're going to have to wait until I get back to Australia, as I don't have colored ones on this computer. Only the latest vBulletin ones. I didn't realize that the smilies would overwrite when I uploaded all of the latest files the other day.
Interestingly enough, vBulletin does seem to have smilie categories. But unfortunately they aren't using it the way that would be cool. They only use it to group the smilies in the "more" list ... but it would be much more useful to have it as a user selection list, so that the user could choose the smilie set that they wanted to use. Much like you guys were suggesting. I've been saying forever that I'd like to add some more smilies. So Death and anyone else if you can give me a list of smilies that aren't included in the basics, then I'll add them. I know you posted them here already, but I'm kind of limited in my time online when I'm travelling, so I want to be able to access them quickly without hunting for them it will make things a whole lot easier for me. I don't see why this thread couldn't have been a simple, non-agressive "I have some smilies I think would be nice, because I don't think these new ones look as good," instead of "These new emoticons look shit. I want the old emoticons back."
The end result is the same. The path you take in achievment is just much easier, and doesn't go around pissing anybody off. If you don't like something, don't whine. Suggest an alternative, without sounding arrogant or bitchy. And if you don't get your way immediately, don't have a triggered attack of PMS. You lose dignity and credibility when you quarrel over something quite small. |
