Should we wait for 1.8, though? I personally think we should.

Until then, we could just have a fuck-around server. We could even run the last backup of the old one and greif stuff.

Havoc 07-30-2011 05:01 AM

It doesn't matter to be quite honest. A Minecraft world is HUGE if it would be fully rendered. Even if we were to expand to a size as big as the previous server, we could still decide to collectively pack up and migrate to untouched land when 1.8 hits.

Compare our previous server world size to a small town in the US. When you're sick of that town you don't move to another planet, you just move to Japan and start over sort of speak. Minecraft worlds are literary big enough to do this.

Havoc 07-30-2011 05:06 AM

Also, I need some figures to decide on server location. I believe most of us are in Europe, correct?

T-nex 07-30-2011 07:23 AM

What is a slot exactly? I was looking into gaming server out of curiosity about prices.... but I don't really get it. How does hosting rental work?

Personally...... I kinda need any money I have as Im moving to Romania for a few months... Otherwise Id probly donate some, but my economical situation is just a bit ... twitchy.

Havoc 07-30-2011 09:17 AM

Slots are the amount of available places for players. Most gaming servers have a predefined amount of slots and thus a fixed maximum amount of players at any given time.

In case of Minecraft the amount of players is heavily tied into the amount of RAM a server has available. So a cheap server will have the bare minimum assigned to it (512MB, which is enough to support 1 to 10 people) and it goes up from there. Prices vary a lot though.

DarkHoodness 07-30-2011 10:37 AM

I don't think we get more than 6 or 7 people playing at once - Maybe we should just rent a cheap server for now (PROVIDED YOU MAKE WEEKLY BACKUPS) and if the server gets more popular later, consider changing hosts? (Though we'll lose everything in the nether like what happened last time)

I will make a donation as soon as my PP account is sorted, which will be very shortly.

Havoc 07-31-2011 02:37 AM

Happy happy update!

Just woke up to an e-mail from the hosting company, sent out by some of the former employees. Unlike their bastard boss, they are trying to set things straight and in doing so have negotiated a deal to have the server back online for a 72 hours window. Apparently they weren't reformated yet. Yay!

So I just logged in and retrieved all our files. Even the Minecraft server is back online and all appears to be well. There's no use playing on it though, the files I retrieved are from a few seconds ago and will be what I will be transferring to the new server, so nothing done from here will be saved until the new server is up.

I assume this changes things as far as the 'starting over' idea is concerned?

Phylum 07-31-2011 02:48 AM

I think we should see what changes with 1.8 before we finalise that decision.

Havoc 07-31-2011 03:04 AM

Well whatever we decide can be decided later, for now I'm setting up and configuring the new server with the old world on it. We can always decide to start anew if we so desire.

Crashpunk 07-31-2011 03:37 AM

That is some good news. Now we've got a chance to see what our stuff looks like incase we want to build it again.

Havoc 07-31-2011 03:38 AM

New server, hosted with long time reliable hosting company Fragnet, is up and running. Everything is working like before, whitelist is back in place and on the backend we even for a few extra features like remote monitoring of the server.

The new server IP is 95.211.74.175:25865.

With Fragnet we also got a free 10 slot TeamSpeak 3 server, which is awesome. I haven't set this up though since I'm at my GF's place. I'll be setting up TeamSpeak later today.

Enjoy the new server! May it last longer than our previous one.

Crashpunk 07-31-2011 03:43 AM

Havoc, Don't suppose I could have the old's server map file if we ain't going to use that one again?

Wil 07-31-2011 04:06 AM

Yaaaay!

Yeah no problem, I'll send you a PM with the file link in a bit.

dripik 07-31-2011 07:16 AM

Nice one. I was expecting to see a new world, but instead, I found myself in Genesis Station once again. Shouldn't we just start working on a new world instead? I mean, if all's in favour for building a little town, I think it should give us plenty to do before 1.8, and we wouldn't need to explore much of the world for it either.

Havoc 07-31-2011 07:41 AM

If we want to start a new place in a new wilderness, what's stopping us from just mass migrating to fresh lands in our current world? The world is basically infinite as it is, seems like a waste to just throw our current buildings away. And besides, we can leave our current settlement as a sort of legacy, ruins if you will :).

Wil 07-31-2011 08:07 AM

I agree with Havoc. Just teleport an op to 5000, 5000 or whatever.

Splat 07-31-2011 08:13 AM

I shall begin construction of a giant nether mass exodus rail!

Hulaabeo 07-31-2011 09:03 AM

Yey! My city wasn't deleted! :D

T-nex 07-31-2011 09:44 AM

I think that its great we have our old world back :)
Also... if we DO decide to start anew.... I think its still possible to move regions from one world to another. I read that somewhere, so I think we could at least save RF.

Also. A teamspeak server?? :D Does that mean we can finally voice cha officially?

Edit: Weeeeeelll... I cant really connect to the server. Hm.

Manco 07-31-2011 10:02 AM

I'd kind of like to see any current projects (Rupturefarms etc.) finished up, and then we break the map up into segments and scatter them randomly in a new map using a world editor.

That way, we can start anew, but we could end up stumbling across old buildings which would add a little bit of adventure and discovery to the world.

Crashpunk 07-31-2011 10:08 AM

I can't connect to the server to :/

And i'm not working on 2Fort online anymore, I've already started it on Single Player

Hulaabeo 07-31-2011 10:26 AM

The server works just fine for me. I might aswell start making a Nether Portal or something.

EDIT: The Gravel shore Signs have been either updated or griefed in a terrible way! D:

All the signs have been removed and replaced with lava and fire! What now?

Havoc 07-31-2011 12:23 PM

Probably the horrible monsters they were talking about! OMG!

Thats just seeping with sarcasm.

I guess I have nothing else to do after I clean that cave up.

Havoc 07-31-2011 01:36 PM

You sound like a person being criticized on their work. Hmm...

Manco 07-31-2011 02:46 PM

Now that I think about it, most of Hula's visits to the server were checking up on the cave.

And most of his posts in this thread are about the cave.

DarkHoodness 07-31-2011 03:31 PM

Well this is excellent news - Thanks so much, Havoc! :D I hope some lessons were learned from this though about backups. (BTW - It may not be a good idea to have the ip address directly on display here or we may get similar problems to last time)

lol, so I re-built the ground and first floor of Rupture Farms in Single Player for no apparent reason. :P Ah well though - I'm actually overjoyed that all that work I did wasn't a total waste of time and that I can continue it.

Apparently MC Edit is a good program to use for copying blocks from one map to another, and like T-Nex suggested, if it works (I haven't tried it), it'll open up a bunch of new opportunities for us once 1.8 finally gets released.

T-nex 07-31-2011 03:48 PM

If it works, then it means we caqn go nuts on our current world, and just make a new one once 1.8 is out. Meaning we wont have to be annoyingly careful not to generate new land :p

DarkHoodness 07-31-2011 04:17 PM

Oh and something interesting - The original Nether from Dripik's server is back for some reason. Shame about the portals we lost though - Didn't someone build a big sandstone tower and bridge somewhere in a desert?

T-nex 07-31-2011 04:42 PM

So uhhh...... I accidentally broke the Apartment blocks minecart station.... I have no idea how to fix it.

DarkHoodness 07-31-2011 06:35 PM

Fix'd.

Also I've built a railway from Genesis Depot stairs to the portal - It makes life easier. Climb down the ladder by the stairs to Genesis Depot.

I didn't do it if that what you were about to ask! I only check on it regulary because I'm enthusiastic about minecraft adventures, ok!

T-nex 07-31-2011 08:10 PM

I don't even know where the gravel shore cave is, so I cant check it out.. Id love to though.

The hell? How can that be? I copied the files directly from the old server to the new one :fuzconf:

Splat 08-01-2011 03:03 AM

I built the sandstone tower. I guess it'd be more or less impossible to find the coordinates of the portal I build nether-side.

Edit: I think i'm gonna take it upon myself to build a rail heading east through the Nether, to make a location for the new settlement. I'll stick a portal on the end but not activate it yet. Then we'll have new chunks for 1.8 (We'll all gather round for the mass migration and find the portal arrives over a vast ocean... of lava... a mile underground).

DarkHoodness 08-01-2011 07:44 AM

Well, I did start building one through the previous nether, but I guess that's gone now. I didn't get far though.

Make sure you put the first terminal right next to the portal to make it easy for people. Oh, and line the tunnel with cobblestone or better to prevent accidents involving ghasts. If you need help with railway mechanics, just say.

EDIT: Is it me or does the new server not bother drawing stuff in the distance? The view distance appears to now be about the same length as Rupture Farms - When you stand on one end of it, you can't see the other end. Guess I'm going to have to ask for a copy of the server map whenever I want to film something.

Wil 08-01-2011 10:41 AM

Obvious question, you haven't altered the draw distance at your end, have you?

DarkHoodness 08-01-2011 10:51 AM

No of course not, or else the fog would be closer. Stuff simply disappears abruptly when it's far away rather than fade into fog.

T-nex 08-01-2011 11:35 AM

I noticed the same.... Dunno.. the new server just seems to be of lower quality.

More lag, more world holes, less distance view....

I thought Id give it some time. But it's as if the world holes have gone WORSE. Like... I went past 4 world holes all relatively close to each other.

One was even tetris shaped!
