Wings of Fire 06-05-2013 05:16 AM

Real issue it was, but the movie came out in 2007. The issue is dated late 2009.

Jbot123 06-05-2013 05:38 AM

Then it was promoting the 20th anniversary.

I don't get this problem of "white knighting". It seems to be a derogatory term for... not being a jerkass?

MeechMunchie 06-05-2013 05:03 PM

It's derogatory towards people who a) assume a demographic can't defend themselves, thus contradicting their supposed respect for said demographic or b) are vocal about an issue because they want to appear compassionate and be applauded for their concern, rather than actually caring about the issue in question.

This is especially ironic in the case of men who speak out against the sexual objectification of women because they think it'll get them laid.

There are white knights who are just nice people, but they're rare.

Bullet Magnet 06-05-2013 06:10 PM

I don't know anyone like that, and I know a lot of male allies. Asking for a cookie each time bullshit, yeah. As for defending demographics, it turns out that men are more able to reach male audiences than women, especially when the kind of men who need the message the most are the ones most most likely to dismiss women anyway.

MISOGYNY!

Seriously though, why bother 'white knighting' anyone? You could work for complete equality across the board. This is why I disagree with the execution of feminism. It wants to solve problems of inequality in the current patriarchy but I haven't met a feminist that admits there are real problems for men in society as well. A prime example would be if there was a war today, right now if a country started invading across Europe and they wanted to reach the UK. Society would expect me to fight and die for my country, but not a woman of the same age. Well, no thank you, I couldn't pick up a gun and shoot someone, I'd probably have a breakdown.

We should work to try and end societal stereotypes and educate people to stop them from being so judgemental to others just because of their beliefs or their gender or anything. Gender equality is a puzzle that can't be solved just by trying to improve things for women because then you only have half the pieces.

Vyrien 06-06-2013 03:07 AM

Yes, misogyny is unfairly prevalent in society.

More misandry say I. More misandry!

I don't know who you've been talking to, I've had only the opposite experience. But it is true that women do have it worse, and in ways that most men don't even have to notice (many of whom seem to get irrationally angry when asked to notice). However, the only people who I have ever met or heard of who are actively trying to resolve those male injustices have also identified as feminist. Which makes sense, come on. Many of them have young sons, and they certainly don't want to see their husbands, fathers, brothers, nephews, uncles, cousins and friends screwed over any more than they want that for themselves. And some of them are men.

Certainly groups like MRA aren't doing anything to help, they exist for the sole purpose of shitting on feminism and mention male injustices only so that they can bring them to bear in their juvenile pissing war.

Here's an interesting TED Talk semi-related to this subject:

Takeaway: men need to speak up about sexism because it is an issue caused by men, and thus there is a responsibility to help tackle the problem.

OANST 06-07-2013 05:35 AM

Here's the thing about sexism that no one wants to mention because it's not pc, and it doesn't lay the blame on what society views as the perpetrators. A lot of women, and I mean a lot of women perpetuate the problem. The vast majority of women still expect men to provide for them, to protect them, and to cater to their whims. At least American women do. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that this isn't a men problem. And I'm not saying that there is something wrong with women as a gender that they are genetically inferior and need this. It's just such an ingrained part of our culture and society that it will be extremely difficult to break from it. The woman who wants the same opportunities as all the men have is unfortunately the same woman who wants to be taken care of about ninety percent of the time. And, yeah. I'd like the whole system to break. It's fucking exhausting, and expensive to date women.

Are you guys ready for a crappy failed pilot, featuring Dennis Hopper as a robot made from bent polygons? I know I am.

Some of that was kind of unrealistic. Could you really use special gloves to feel an image of someone's face? And that bit with the T-shirt, I was never stupid enough to think that middle aged guy was actually a baby with stubble, a head twice the size of his body, a diaper, and a torso as small as my hand. Chatting with me in an adult-sounding voice on the internet. Mutant babies don't do that.

What, did you think the cloven hooves would get in the way?

Jbot123 06-08-2013 04:16 AM

I know pedophiles can hack shit, but the most they can hack is a webcam. The crap in that video was fake. You can't take photos of someone using an image on a screen. It has to be a separate camera. If there is a way to do that, it wouldn't be on such an old computer. And all of that tech the pedo had? He'd have to be a billionaire rocket scientist to own that. Also, no games looked that good during the time that kind of computer was around. I don't know about the gas thing, but I'm not sure that can happen either.
