To be honest, I don't see what's the big deal with Gears other than the fact that it's an Xbox exclusive. It's... average. I'm trying to get through Gears of War 1 now and I'm playing it just a bit at a time because otherwise I'd get really fucking bored.

Graphics, shotguns, monster designs, best cover system, and the multiplayer is different from almost everything else out there.

Mr. Bungle 09-22-2011 05:24 PM

I played Gears of War 3 on co-op campaign a bit today. Probably the most of fun I've ever had playing a Gears of War game, and I really enjoyed the first two.

I also spent the last few days playing through Resident Evil 4 again. Holy fuck, I forgot how amazing and addictive that game was. Once I start playing it, I just can't put it down. Gonna replay Resident Evil 5 soon (this time with a friend).

I also picked up Resident Evil: Code Veronica on PS2 today for $3. I'll play that as soon as I get the opportunity. It'll be my first time playing a "real" survival horror game. We'll see how that works out.

The locust are pretty boring though.

Phylum 09-23-2011 01:57 AM

Frozen Synapse. Thanks MM!

It's amazing. It's nothing but tactical. The amount of control you have over each unit at various points in time is unsurpassed in my experience. The ratio of game time to planning time is funny, too.

I'm anxious to play online against real people. As clever as the AI is it just doesn't feel human. I want to be able to employ mindgames on my opponents and scare them into making silly moves.

Today I went to our local Gamestop because there was an offer that all used PS2 games are 2 for 7,90€ so I got Zone of The Enders and God of War 2.

God of War 2 is really good, but then I remembered that I already own it. Fail... Well, at least now I have it with a platinum case and the original black label case. (Which is in really good condition too!)

Zone of The Enders I haven't tried yet. I hope it works because the disk looks quite scratched and it's missing the manual and some of the cover. Might take it back and ask to change it for another game. I think I saw SSX 3 there...

Strike Witch 09-23-2011 08:23 AM

Been blazing through Starfox 3D. Controls are good, the 3D combined with the upgraded graphics looks fucking amazing.

Voices are mostly good, except Slippy sounds boyisher and Wolf and Leon sound the same.

MeechMunchie 09-23-2011 12:30 PM

So, have you done one yet?

I've been 'playing' an image library extractor for Age Of Wonders. Damn, that game had good art. What? You want me to post a screenstretching collage of my favourite portraits? Oh, if you insist.

Yes, that is a TURTLE BALLISTA at the end of the first row.
5th on the 2nd row looks strangely familiar.
2nd on the 4th heralds from the glory days of video game racism.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9607/aowghj.png

3rd on the 6th row is ... erm... forget it.
The in-game description of Dire Penguins (2nd, 7th row) begins "Bred to be ferocious than your average giant penguin..."
The less said about the end of the 7th row, the better.

(For fans of subtraction, there are 8 rows)

Dixanadu 09-23-2011 12:42 PM

...why are there women soldiers in Gears 3?

Crashpunk 09-23-2011 01:35 PM

Star Wars: Battlefront 2

I've played 5 hours so far, been doing the campaigns and instant action. Space battles and fighting on Hoth is just the best.

Daxter King 09-23-2011 10:03 PM

Still been playing the fuck out of Gears 3. Now that Ive done the campaign, I've mainly been playing Execution, with some TDM on the side. I beat Beast Mode, which is really fun, but too short in my opinion, as well as Horde Mode. I actually got to Wave 40 and Wave 49 on two separate occasions before beating Horde, still fun. I actually got done playing with some of the developers right now, pretty cool guys. Apparently if you piss them off, they can perma-pink your weapons and other such nonsense.

Dixanadu 09-24-2011 06:38 AM

I like Gears, but for me, it has no replay value.

I enjoyed the first two games immensely, but playing through a second time wasn't amusing.

Manco 09-24-2011 08:16 AM

Just polished off Portal again, fuck I love free games.

Also been playing a bit of BIT.TRIP RUNNER (fuck that game’s lack of checkpoints), and continuing on with Borderlands which is a lot more fun now I know what I’m doing.

Crashpunk 09-24-2011 09:21 AM

BIT.TRIP RUNNER is so hard I don't enjoy it at all. Which is a shame cause i loved BIT.TRIP BEAT

Jordan 09-28-2011 08:40 AM

I downloaded Team Fortress 2. It's so fun and addictive, but I am shockingly bad at it. I bet it's even more fun with friends... *cough* need gaming friends *cough* Also just bought Garry's Mod. Man, it's so neat! I haven't messed with much on it, but I know I'll spend ours on it.

MeechMunchie 09-28-2011 08:56 AM

Are you in the OWF Steam group? Plenty of gamer friends there.

Jordan 09-28-2011 09:03 AM

Yes I am. I'm not sure if anyone in there plays TF2 though. Apart from Crashpunk...

MeechMunchie 09-28-2011 09:05 AM

Mac does, I did and will soon in the future, after taking a six-month break from gaming.

Wings of Fire 09-28-2011 09:06 AM

I plan to download TF2 in the recent future.

On a related note, I also plan to join the OWF Steam group in the recent future.

Dynamithix 09-28-2011 09:15 AM

I bought Alpha Protocol yesterday for pretty cheap. It got really mixed reviews, but it doesn't seem too bad. The AI's really dumb though. Otherwise it seems like a decent espionage game.

Also, I bought a game called Project Eden for the PS2 and it's really strange and hard.

Wings of Fire 09-28-2011 09:20 AM

I wish I had a good comeback to that.

MeechMunchie 09-28-2011 09:27 AM

"Of course! I only just left!"

Crashpunk 09-29-2011 08:34 AM

Been playing Killing Floor for the first time ever. Its a very good game indeed. Sorta like Left 4 Dead in ways.

The guys with the chainsaw attached to there arm can go fuck them selfs.

Mr. Bungle 09-29-2011 04:30 PM

Got Minecraft last week and have been playing that a lot lately. I underestimated how addictive this game would be, damn.

JennyGenesis 10-01-2011 07:25 AM

Thanks to Dynamithix, I picked up Child of Eden since it is a prequel to Rez which is one of my all time favourite games, so I saw it on offer for £25 brand new at Game, I took it to the cashier who told me that they had a pre owned copy for £19, so I went for that, but turns out that they were sold out of pre owned copies so I went for the new one instead, but the guy still only charged me £19 :)

When I got it home I was a little dissapointed, at first I felt that the game was bizarely confusing and just felt inferior to Rez, but when I played it more and more, I am now of the opinion that it is better than Rez and it is now one of my all time favourites. Totally love it, but it can make you dizzy if you play it too long...

STM 10-01-2011 07:36 AM

EDIT: New page.

Dixanadu 10-03-2011 04:36 AM

I've been playing FIFA 12

But, I suppose none of you are into that.

STM 10-03-2011 05:07 AM

I like '11 but what is new in '12 that would make me consider buying it...if I had a console that supported it?

Crashpunk 10-03-2011 05:12 AM

I don't like football so i've never played FIFA.

Dynamithix 10-03-2011 05:26 AM

Well isn't that good to know, crashpunk.

Controls are now manual; no more one-two pass.

Much more fluid movement.

Choice of commentary.

Turkish/Czech leagues removed. Galatasaray is now in 'Rest of World'

Peru added to International.

Honestly? Could've been better. More Greek/Serbian/Croatian teams needed. Wales and Japan national team once again left out, and seriously, who the fuck uses the Australian/American/Korean leagues anyway?

Past that, yes. Pretty good.

Disgruntled Intern 10-03-2011 11:22 AM

Dead Island. It's good, but not great. Sort of boring, really.

Dynamithix 10-03-2011 11:44 AM

I heard it would be better without the repetitive sidemissions. Is it really just things like "Go to the other side of the island to get me 5 boxes of fruitjuice!"?

EDIT: Oh, and Forza Motorsport 4 demo came out today for Gold members on XBL. It's really gorgeous. I spent at least 5 minutes just looking at the Ferrari, haha. The cars control really well too. I haven't bought any racing games for ages with the exception of Blur and I lost that earlier this year, haha.

MeechMunchie 10-03-2011 02:17 PM

Ooh, has anyone played Bastion?

STM 10-03-2011 02:26 PM

Saw that on Steam MM, any good?

Also @ Dixy - What about the tackling for O or B (depending on your console), apparently you can basically just stick your leg out and they run around you.

That's part of what I don't like. Although I'm only in act II, the majority of the side quests have been boring fetch crap. "I lost my teddy bear/necklace/etc, go find it", "I got separated from ____, will you look for him?" or "Bring me X cans/bottles of Y". And I really thought I'd enjoy the lack of firearms and emphasis on melee combat, but after a while it just gets old. Maybe it's because I find myself using the same combat strategy for just about every zombie/infected that I encounter. It's pretty much just "Kick, kick, swing, kick, beat/slice whatever I've knocked to the ground" over and over.

I keep waiting for some awesome plot twist/development, but so far...Not so much.

The game itself is quite good, but the real hook is the best vidya gimmick in recent years: Narration. It's just a laugh to have the frequently unrealistic actions we make in games forcibly tied into a story. Also the general atmosphere is pretty nice.

As I've said before, I'm not really a fan of anime, but spend any amount of time on the internet and it will eventually vomit up something that sounds compelling enough to justify the art. So as a Lovecraft fan and general lover of creepy space-doom I played Saya no Uta.

OH GOD. SOME THINGS CANNOT BE UNSEEN

WoF seems to like VNs with gratuitous amounts of gore (plus scary preadatory little girls), he'd probably enjoy it more than me.
