Feel free to skip all the exposition to the part where it shows THE TANK COMPLETELY SUBMERSING ITSELF UNDERWATER.

Possibly the cutest thing I've seen all year.

Weird timing, Nate. I just saw that myself for the first time yesterday.
The making of is also quite fun.

Yes, I really liked this vid too.

Really, when i was a kid, I really wanted a dog-robot :p ... but I realized that dog-robots do not exist later on :( At least not ones that are sentient like I wanted them to be.

An icepack fell off of my neck onto my balls when I opened this Ustream of a North Carolina Reverend's call in show.

Mac Sirloin 07-08-2010 05:06 PM

After watching it for a little while, it's actually not that bad. The guy himself is just a reverend who prays for people. The callers are occasionally bad, but otherwise it's fine.

I'm actually going to take the link out. Don't want some 4Chan turd coming across it and ruining it.

Sure. Other than the fact that he spent more time asking for money than he did praying.

Too bad I decided to leave it on for awhile and he actually didn't do that. He also called someone calling in to pray for a gay family member a' busy body'. And said that if someone is happy leave them be.

A long time ago, about 2001 or so... there was a girl I made friends with, shortly after I had split up with a girl I had been dating for over 3 years. Needless to say, I really liked the one I mentioned previous, and I was cruising to find someone new to end up with. Well..I was a little over eager in that case, and I was pretty annoying to her...which, wrecked the friendship we made, and it drove us apart after we had a fight one evening.

I've always been of the mentality that you fight for what's worth saving, but because of what I had been dealing with already prior..I resorted to the other part of my mentality...if you don't feel like dealing with something...walk away.

So I did. I saw her a few months later, but I didn't know if I should say something to her or not. Sooo...letting my ego get the better of me, I just kept walking past her and ignored her. I didn't see her for maybe 4 years after that. Than one day a friend of mine at my job said...umm..you're never going to guess who just applied for a job here. Yep...It was her. I stayed the hell away from the area she worked in for weeks, and did my best to not look in her direction when I had to pass her. 2 weeks after that point, I had to pass her while moving some supplies from one location to another, and she saw me...and came over trying to get my attention. Of course..I was ignoring her, till I had no choice but to acknowledge her. She asked why I wasn't talking to her since she showed up...I asked her if she was serious, and than asked if she remembered the last few unpleasant things she had said to me. (Go Hug yourself was one of her less colorful terms)

Well....3 minutes into talking to her, I could see the look of curiousity and politeness fading out of her face and she turned white and looked horrified. She told me she didn't remember any of that, so I smirked it off asking how do you not remember something like that? That's when she said to me...notice how I have bangs for my hair style? Yeah. I didn't have them when you knew me before, did I? Nope. So...she pulled her bangs back and the right side of the upper part of her forehead and face was covered with scars. It turns out she had been in a REALLY bad car accident...spent a year in a coma...and than had to spend 2 years in rehab. And that whole time? I was mad at her...couldn't think of anything nice to say about her...and look at what was going on...she almost died.

She also lost a years worth of memory...she didn't remember that we had a falling out...she just remembered that I had always been really nice to her and she thought I liked her.

Dude..I can't tell you how horrible I felt about that. A week later, she asked me to go out with her for a night of fun...and we did...and we had a great time. Quite a few times after that too. So I learned a pretty valuable lesson from that..I know I'm lucky to say that it has a happy ending in that I have a great friend now.
Apparently this actually happened to a guy I know on another forum.

Don't get snotty with me over a link that you posted. I left it on for about 45 minutes, which he spent about 30 of asking for money. If you had a different experience, well good for fucking you.

No, straight up. He did not spend 30 out of any period of 45 minutes (successive or otherwise) asking for donations. Did he spend all of that time taking calls? No. Did he ask for donations more than what was necessary? Possibly, but neither of us actually know whether they need it or not. We're talking about a Live Stream by some Small Town North Carolina Church made with what appears to be a 30 year old video camera. Not some poncy South Cali methodist job, yo.

However, at least 95% of his callers were elderly women. I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that they could spare the money if they wanted. I'm not saying that Reverend flab of the choir of chins is right to try to appeal to them, but at least he's not doing it while spouting bigotry and promoting other bullshit Christian agendas.

Also, I do belive this is awesome:

There's also The Sniper doiong jazz hands, The Pyro acting like some kind of 50's lady dancer, and The Spy doing MJ. The best part is it's not even finished.

Wish I could animate stuff like that. He's pretty good.

As I mentioned in my last entry, I've been watching Babylon 5 lately. It's not a perfect show, but it has one big advantage: it's consistent and believable.

Contrast this with Doctor Who. Doctor Who is fun to watch, but if you think about it for more than two seconds you notice it's full of plot holes and contradictions. Things that cause time travel paradoxes that threaten to destroy the universe one episode go without a hitch the next. And the TARDIS, the sonic screwdriver, and the Doctor's biology gain completely different powers no one's ever alluded to depending on the situation. The aliens are hysterically unlikely, often without motives or believable science, the characters will do any old insane thing when it makes the plot slightly more interesting, and everything has either a self-destruct button or an easily findable secret weakness that it takes no efforts to defend against.

But I guess I'm not complaining. If the show was believable, the Doctor would have gotten killed the first time he decided to take on a massive superadvanced alien invasion force by walking right up to them openly with no weapons and no plan. And then they would have had to cancel the show, and then I would lose my chance to look at the pretty actress who plays Amy Pond.

So Doctor Who is not a complete loss. But then there are some shows that go completely beyond the pale of enjoyability, until they become nothing more than overwritten collections of tropes impossible to watch without groaning.

I think the worst offender here is the History Channel and all their programs on the so-called "World War II".

Let's start with the bad guys. Battalions of stormtroopers dressed in all black, check. Secret police, check. Determination to brutally kill everyone who doesn't look like them, check. Leader with a tiny villain mustache and a tendency to go into apopleptic rage when he doesn't get his way, check. All this from a country that was ordinary, believable, and dare I say it sometimes even sympathetic in previous seasons.

I wouldn't even mind the lack of originality if they weren't so heavy-handed about it. Apparently we're supposed to believe that in the middle of the war the Germans attacked their allies the Russians, starting an unwinnable conflict on two fronts, just to show how sneaky and untrustworthy they could be? And that they diverted all their resources to use in making ever bigger and scarier death camps, even in the middle of a huge war? Real people just aren't that evil. And that's not even counting the part where as soon as the plot requires it, they instantly forget about all the racism nonsense and become best buddies with the definitely non-Aryan Japanese.

Not that the good guys are much better. Their leader, Churchill, appeared in a grand total of one episode before, where he was a bumbling general who suffered an embarrassing defeat to the Ottomans of all people in the Battle of Gallipoli. Now, all of a sudden, he's not only Prime Minister, he's not only a brilliant military commander, he's not only the greatest orator of the twentieth century who can convince the British to keep going against all odds, he's also a natural wit who is able to pull out hilarious one-liners practically on demand. I know he's supposed to be the hero, but it's not realistic unless you keep the guy at least vaguely human.

So it's pretty standard "shining amazing good guys who can do no wrong" versus "evil legions of darkness bent on torture and genocide" stuff, totally ignoring the nuances and realities of politics. The actual strategy of the war is barely any better. Just to give one example, in the Battle of the Bulge, a vastly larger force of Germans surround a small Allied battalion and demand they surrender or be killed. The Allied general sends back a single-word reply: "Nuts!". The Germans attack, and, miraculously, the tiny Allied force holds them off long enough for reinforcements to arrive and turn the tide of battle. Whoever wrote this episode obviously had never been within a thousand miles of an actual military.

Probably the worst part was the ending. The British/German story arc gets boring, so they tie it up quickly, have the villain kill himself (on Walpurgisnacht of all days, not exactly subtle) and then totally switch gears to a battle between the Americans and the Japanese in the Pacific. Pretty much the same dichotomy - the Japanese kill, torture, perform medical experiments on prisoners, and frickin' play football with the heads of murdered children, and the Americans are led by a kindly old man in a wheelchair.

Anyway, they spend the whole season building up how the Japanese home islands are a fortress, and the Japanese will never surrender, and there's no way to take the Japanese home islands because they're invincible...and then they realize they totally can't have the Americans take the Japanese home islands so they have no way to wrap up the season.

So they invent a completely implausible superweapon that they've never mentioned until now. Apparently the Americans got some scientists together to invent it, only we never heard anything about it because it was "classified". In two years, the scientists manage to invent a weapon a thousand times more powerful than anything anyone's ever seen before - drawing from, of course, ancient mystical texts. Then they use the superweapon, blow up several Japanese cities easily, and the Japanese surrender. Convenient, isn't it?

...and then, in the entire rest of the show, over five or six different big wars, they never use the superweapon again. Seriously. They have this whole thing about a war in Vietnam that lasts decades and kills tens of thousands of people, and they never wonder if maybe they should consider using the frickin' unstoppable mystical superweapon that they won the last war with. At this point, you're starting to wonder if any of the show's writers have even watched the episodes the other writers made.

I'm not even going to get into the whole subplot about breaking a secret code (cleverly named "Enigma", because the writers couldn't spend more than two seconds thinking up a name for an enigmatic code), the giant superintelligent computer called Colossus (despite this being years before the transistor was even invented), the Soviet strongman whose name means "Man of Steel" in Russian (seriously, between calling the strongman "Man of Steel" and the Frenchman "de Gaulle", whoever came up with the names for this thing ought to be shot).

So yeah. Stay away from the History Channel. Unlike most of the other networks, they don't even try to make their stuff believable.
truth is stranger than fiction.
