I've just watched "Mars Attacks!". I have seen it before, like >10 years ago. It's about aliens from Mars, that attack.

I really enjoyed it. Though it was intentionally stupid, it was fun to watch, and I love the alien design.

Renney77 09-24-2014 05:16 AM

Wow, there are crazy amounts of these threads lel.

Here are the best movies I've ever seen to date.

Apocalypse now
Train spotting
Hmm Lord of the rings trilogy is pretty swell
Butterfly effect
Pain and gain
Requiem for a dream
shutter island

I think that is all. They are also some of the few films I've watched, I make sure before I watch a film I'm gonna like it so I don;t waste time haha

Also I recommend anybody read these books. The dune books are great, I have only read one so far so not sure how the others play out but look forward to them! And all of Jr.r tolkiens books are amazing, though for some reason watching/reading them makes me feel sick because it makes me feel really sad:P

Nepsotic 09-24-2014 11:58 AM

I actually think that series 8 is one of the best yet. Clara has been a shitty character but she's actually gaining some personality now, and despite the fact that not ever episode has been great this series, none of them have been bad. It's not like series 6 or 7, which were just continuous shit. 8 has been great so far in comparison to the last few.

Peter Capaldi is an actor with such gravitas he manages to keep me from turning off. The writing is abysmal these days, and it doesn't help that it's regarded in the same league as some major American TV series which have budgets far in excess of Doctor Who. Where the relatively inexperienced Matt Smith couldn't, Capaldi props the show up with his acting, but the scripts don't do him justice.

Moffat was one of my favourite individual writers in the RTD era, but he doesn't really have what it takes to take the show in this bold and exciting direction he's craving. Time to step down.

Don't you think he looks tired?

Varrok 09-26-2014 09:43 AM

I've seen first Mad Max. It's about Max, who also happens to be mad. I thought it was a good movie. Then I watched Mad Max 2 and loved every second of it. Superb movie.

I couldn't disagree more about the writing. Series 8 has been fantastic in terms of writing compared to the abysmal series 6 and 7, it almost feels like series 2 all over again, but with a bit of Tom Baker and Colin Baker mixed in.
Tonight's episode was a prime example of that. They let the characters breathe and it leaves me in high hopes that Doctor Who is actually getting good again.

In other news I watched WataMote and it's my most favouritest anime evar.

Nate 09-27-2014 09:16 PM

I kept thinking that the DW discussion was only going to be ephemeral, so I didn't say anything before now. Please discuss Doctor Who in its relevant thread and not here.

Is there an English dub yet? I’m too dumb to read subtitles and pay attention to what’s going on at the same time.

MeechMunchie 09-28-2014 04:46 AM

WHEEEEEOOOOOOOO-K'PASH

Sorry, that's just Joe's respect for Manco crashing through the floor.

Yes, but it sucks. I urge you to watch the sub because the voice actors are so damn perfect.

The only anime I’ve ever watched is an adaptation of a video game. I doubt he had any to begin with.

What’s the point in a perfect voice if I can’t understand it?

That's why you read the subtitles.

I've thoroughly enjoyed some (Eureka Seven, Moribito, Darker than Black) of the dubs I've seen, it just needs a good studio. Let's see...

:

Sentai Filmworks licensed the series in North America and released it on Blu-ray and DVD on August 26, 2014.[29]
uh

Yeah, you're better off not watching it.

But then I’m not watching, I’m reading.

Yeah, you're better off not watching it.

Eeh surely it can’t be that bad.

MeechMunchie 09-28-2014 08:41 AM

The Cromartie High School dub is good. And that one where they didn't bother to read the script.

Please tell me it was Sands of Destruction. I really love show, despite never playing the game it was based off of. If not, I do recommend it, it's been a few years since I saw it so it might not be as fantastic as my memory is tells me it is, but I bet it's still good.
Oh, and it's got dubs.

Nope, never heard of it. I watched the adaptation of Persona 4, which I also heartily recommend, especially if you’ve played the game.

Oh, and it's got dubs.

Clearly it should be destroyed.

Job McYossie 09-28-2014 01:17 PM

Oh the P4 adapation. Can't watch it yet, still want to beat the game. Speaking of which, the P3 movie came out recently (and they changed the main character's name, again) though it's still only in subs. Still though, I plan on watching that and then complaining about it.

Wings of Fire 09-28-2014 01:21 PM

There is nothing inherently wrong with the concept of dubbing, even though I'd never watch a dub myself if the sub was available.

It's just Sentai Filmworks are notorious for being... well...

They're well known for slaughtering good dub performances with terrible scripts and direction. Tomoko's actually got a pretty good English VA but I can't see it not sounding like shit.

MeechMunchie 09-28-2014 03:05 PM

Meanwhile...

Job McYossie 09-28-2014 03:25 PM

Is that that same guy I see pictures of eating pencils?

MeechMunchie 09-28-2014 04:22 PM

I expect so.

I've been meaning to watch Clannad. I probably won't be watching the dub, though.

She's actually not that bad.

Compared to everything else by Sentai.

Varrok 09-29-2014 09:10 AM

I've just watched The Shawshank Redemption. It's a '90s movie about a redemption from a Shawshank prison. I loved it. It was truly amazing, one of the best movies I have ever seen.

OANST 09-29-2014 09:18 AM

One of two movies made from Stephen King books that actually turned out really well.

Xavier 09-29-2014 09:44 AM

Which is the other one according to you?

OANST 09-29-2014 09:45 AM

Stand By Me.

Wings of Fire 09-29-2014 09:54 AM

Misery is pretty good. Mostly due to Kathy Bates.

I actually forgot about that one. Dolores Claiborne was pretty damn good, too. Okay. Make that four.

Varrok 09-29-2014 10:27 AM

I haven't watched many King movies, but some of them looked very silly. With sky vaginas and clowns.

OANST 09-29-2014 10:59 AM

All the good ones have no supernatural elements in them.

Xavier 09-29-2014 11:37 AM

I have a soft spot for Rosered, I know it's not an amazing movie but for some reason I like it very very much :p

Nepsotic 09-29-2014 11:37 AM

The Shining, guys. The Shining.

I liked the Green Mile.
It'd be better without that whole insects from mouth thingy

OANST 09-29-2014 11:44 AM

Green Mile has some good moments, but I wouldn't call it a really good movie. Same for The Shining.

You know what? Carrie was pretty good. I'm just going to shut the fuck up, and back away from this conversation now.

Nepsotic 09-29-2014 11:53 AM

No no no no no, you can't just say that The Shining wasn't a really good film and then run off. Get back here and explain yourself.

Varrok 09-29-2014 12:00 PM

I don't know much about Shining other than there's a nice Black Sabbath song by the name. I'd like to hear your opinions about the movie, whats the fuss all about?

Nepsotic 09-29-2014 12:50 PM

It's possibly some of the best directing I've ever seen in a film, for one thing.

Manco 09-29-2014 01:20 PM

I need to see more Kubrick films.

Anyway I just watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for the first time in a good year or two. Seems the blu-ray version I picked up has a few extra scenes added in compared to my DVD copy. Still love it, but it might have stretched it out a bit too long I think.

I've never seen The Green Mile but I've read the book, and I completely agree with you. It was a beautifully atmospheric character study that was completely destroyed by the big, dumb, magic man and the ridiculous plot swerves sparked off by his existence.
