So what don't you get, exactly?

What I mean is that the first was fantastic, but while the sequel's not as good, it's far from being a terrible game.

Dynamithix 07-12-2011 03:18 PM

I'd love to play the second one, but due to a strange glitch, I can't continue the game. The Little Sister is supposed to collect ADAM from a body and she never does that. And I can't be bothered with starting a new game anymore.

Anyways, this is getting off-topic a bit so here's a funny trailer for the upcoming Serious Sam game!

Even Ken Levine is disappointed with the sequel. I mean come on. My biggest beef with the game was that it went from an amazing story driven and visually orgasmic treat to one long drawn out escort mission that essentially had you playing something similar to GoW's Horde mode...In a less pretty/polished and more muted version of rapture. It was just boring and half-assed.

Mac Sirloin 07-12-2011 03:32 PM

It's weird how the Bioshock franchise relfects Halo so well.

Disgruntled Intern 07-12-2011 03:33 PM

Except that Halo's story has always been half-assed and stupid.

Mac Sirloin 07-12-2011 04:57 PM

Yeah, but the first in both series were considered landmarks of their time. Looking back that's pretty much the only similarity, apart from online multiplayer being introduced in both sequels.

I'm still looking forward to The Last Guardian because apparently I now love vaporware. Also, I no longer have a PS3, so I'm greatly looking forward to demanding it back from April if it ever does come out.

To the best of my knowledge, they've never announced a release date so they can't have postponed its release. Thus, not vapourware.

Also, I haven't watched that Bioshock Infinite video yet, but the other ones I've seen have been so clearly scripted and following a specific path that I can't imagine what the actual dynamic gameplay will be like. It just seems like it's going to be the sort of game where the designer wants to show off all his brilliant ideas, so it ends up being completely linear and the action periodically stops until you find the task you need to perform to be at the right place and the right time for the next scripted sequence to kick off.

Daxter King 07-12-2011 08:17 PM

That was my fear at first as well, but apparently the player can go onto any available rail at any time. That could easily be bullshit though. I also don't know how that demo would play out if you could choose anything, I mean how would the player know the right ones? They could also do some bullshit like, "Oh Booker, that rail cant be used right now, its too dirty." I also don't like the fact that enemies can shoot on rails, but you can't. As far as Im aware you were hired to save this girl, so you must be trained in some sort of fashion, these people are just random rebels, yet seemingly posses more skill than you.

My biggest complaint about Infinite though is it taking many E3 awards that should have gone to Prey 2.

Disgruntled Intern 07-12-2011 08:51 PM

Unless I'm mistaken, the character you play in Infinite is a disgraced Pinkerton agent.

I'm sorry, what? The gameplay of Bioshock 2 is incredibly similar to the first. Seems your beef with the game is the entirely optional Little Sister ADAM-gathering.

The game's less pretty because hey, it's set ten years after the first. Of course it's going to be less pretty, the setting's designed from the ground up to look like things have gone to shit.

And hey, at least the ending wasn't just an underwhelming boss fight and a 30-second CGI cutscene.

Right. So you can choose not to protect the little sisters while they harvest, which seems to be a little counter productive to being a Big Daddy, as well as just, I don't know..Missing the point? But every harvesting operation is exactly the same. THAT is my beef.

And I get that it's ten years later. I'm not fucking stupid. What is fucking stupid was the decision to go with this plot rather than the proposed prequel that they ended up scrapping. That aside, it seems like that because it's ten years later and "the setting's designed from the ground up to look like things have gone to shit", this gave the designers an excuse to recycle backgrounds. Constantly. Everything was just bland, mediocre, and rehashed. It could have been way better. It was just all substandard for bioshock.

As for the boss fight of the first game, I'll agree that it was weak, but first person shooters and boss fights rarely work well. Still, I thought the 'good' ending for the first was pretty decent. But whatever.

You don't have to harvest at all.

Besides, what did you expect? There's no way they could have made every single harvest unique.

Hm, I never heard anything about a prequel. I'll agree that would have been far more interesting.

I found the gameplay fun and the story adequate, I never even noticed any recycled backgrounds.

I think the problem is that it's a sequel to a very good, very popular game. Because of that, it's very easy to compare the two, and yeah I completely agree that it's just not as good. But I think that, on its own merits, it's not a bad game.

Having not played it or had any real interest in it past mid production, I never stopped assuming it was a prequel.

Dixanadu 07-14-2011 07:36 AM

Wait, they scrapped it? Wasn't it the one based in some cloud city?

That's Bioshock Infinite.

Bioshock 2 was meant to be a Rapture based prequel to Bioshock.

Dixanadu 07-14-2011 10:11 AM

You mean before the whole ADAM tits up thing?

That actually sounded better. It would've been nice to see a Bioshock level where everything is not ruined or leaking.

From what I remember the original Bioshock 2/prequel was supposed to take place during Rapture's heyday and lead into the events that lead into the civil war. Would have been a lot of fun. They sort of explored that with the multiplayer aspect of bioshock 2, but not really.

Dynamithix 07-22-2011 06:14 AM

Deus Ex Human Revolution is going to be awesome.

Disgruntled Intern 07-24-2011 12:22 PM

agreed. also looking forward to the gunstringer.

Dynamithix 07-24-2011 04:40 PM

I remember this trailer, don't know why I didn't post it then. Seems really interesting.

I was a pro-aug bloke, I've always been for the advance of technology, but that trailer appeals to my fight-the-power activist side. I'm not sure any more.

Also, this is freaking me out.

Disgruntled Intern 07-25-2011 08:57 AM

This looks like it could be fun:

But I'm generally excited by any Kinect game that doesn't look gimmicky and boring like the majority of the launch titles thus far. Also not really a game [although it does come bundled with one], but we just pre-ordered this:

Dynamithix 07-25-2011 10:31 AM

I'd rather have a bundle with a blue and white Kinect, console and a controller. The golden controller and the game itself puts me off. Kind of cool though.

Destro 07-25-2011 10:45 AM

I love super mario galaxy 1, just don't have the second one yet. might be getting it.

The white kinect won't match our TV, but really neither will the R2D2 console, so we're still undecided as to whether we'll keep our current kinect and sell the white or the other way around. As far as the gold controller goes, my only real beef is the obvious issue with finger prints getting all over the damned thing, but I feel like you can't really have r2d2 without C3PO. Although they could have rendered the kinect in gold with the exposed wire design and done the controller in blue and white, which would have solved the finger print issue. Oh well. We pre-ordered because I still have the 60 gb 360, and it's starting to sound...loud. Plus I'm a pretty huge star wars fan, and the fact that the hard drive on this console is 320GB pretty much sealed the deal.

Dynamithix 07-25-2011 05:58 PM

Yeah, I understand. My Xbox is also an old 60GB model. I've been thinking of getting a new Xbox, I saw a deal with Kinect and an 250GB Xbox Slim for roughly 250€, that's a damn good price for a Kinect and the console. But then again, a Kinect wouldn't probably work in my room so I'd have to use the console and the Kinect in the living room.

Choices, choices...

MeechMunchie 07-26-2011 06:25 AM

You Xbox louts finally get to join in the murderously frustrating fun.

Remember, Spelunky was making you tear your hair out before Super Meat Boy made it cool.

Anyone interested should give the PC version a go, it's fundamentally the same, looks better in my opinion, has better music, and will have you addicted in 7.4 minutes.

The first time you get chased by a giant spider you may piss yourself. Just a warning.

EDIT: Squeee~! Mk. 3 Iron helms!

Dynamithix 07-31-2011 01:10 PM

Damn, Hard Reset looks really awesome. Only for PC though.

That was basically for Scrabtrapman's benefit. I don't expect anyone but dedicated fanboys to be impressed.

There's a legacy of cop-outs when it comes to choice, you see.

Dynamithix 08-03-2011 03:29 PM

Lol at this trailer. Really want this game. :p

Daxter King 08-05-2011 05:16 PM

So I went to Quakecon, got to play Rage and see demos of Prey 2 and Skyrim.

Rage was honestly better than I expected. The visuals are really impressive, especially since its running at 60 FPS, there are few games even in the same league. The only complaints I can find are LOD(texture pop-in) and the lack of AA. Both of which are amended in the PC version, I played the 360 one since I prefer the controller, but saw the PC version and it looked visibly better. The gun play is great, you can hold up to four guns at once, with some guns having alternate fire. The AI is also robust, I died several times in the harder level I played through, the soldiers reminded me of the Elites from the Halo series, which is a very good thing. They flank, roll, take cover, and rush in when you start to take damage. I also played a racing segment, which was also fun, reminded me a lot of the racing in the Jak games. The only problem I found with this is that it seemed like sometimes the game would tell you a rocket is coming at you, but you can't do anything about it. I died right before the finish line and that sort of angered me that they dont have some sort of move to get rockets off your tail, since they are so abundant. Overall Rage seemed like a really fun game, but nothing more than a rental for me. The multiplayer is only races and deathmatches in the buggies, which I don't imagine will bolster a lasting community and the gameplay, while competent, does nothing to set itself apart in a sea of shooters, other than being really good looking.

On to Skyrim next. They showed us an extension of the E3 demo we saw, I assume the press has already seen this. The guy playing went through a started on a mountain, went through a village, a dungeon, and ended in a dragon fight. The graphics are greatly improved from Oblivion, the animations specially almost look a generation ahead of what Oblivion had. There was a lot of different weapons and magic shown off, along with some new dragon shouts. You can mix and match different spells, resulting in some cool effects. There is a spell that lets you see all living things in the immediate area, coupled with another that sends the enemy into a rage and it will kill other enemies. He mixed and matched a lot of other things, I can't put it all in one post, just ask and I will tell you what I know. I dont know if they have showed off glass weapons before, but they look like the ones from Morrowind more than Oblivion, which I like. They didn't show any new races.

The Prey 2 demo wasn't near as expansive as Skyrim's, unfortunately. It did show off some new interrogation stuff, threatening people, and interacting with NPCs, whether saving them or killing them. We were shown capturing a new bounty alive and then the demo they showed off at E3 kicked in, albeit played a bit differently because of AI. You can ask me questions about this, but they really didn't show anything new. Im still really excited for it though.

Dynamithix 08-07-2011 02:41 PM

The Quakecon demo of Skyrim:

Looks fucking awesome. Now I'm sure I'll get this. Oh, and the collector's edition was revealed:

http://cdn.gamerant.com/wp-content/u...rs-Edition.jpg

Nice statue, but if you really want that you'll have to pay 130£. Damn.

Ridg3 08-08-2011 01:49 PM

Worth it.

Mr. Bungle 08-08-2011 04:05 PM

So worth it.

Dynamithix 08-08-2011 04:38 PM

That collector's edition? Eh, don't know about that. They could've added a lot more content for that price tag. And what the fuck's up with the pricing, 130£ in UK, 150€ in the rest of Europe and 150$ in the US. That's unfair.

The ME3 collector's edition on the other hand looks really good. And it's only about 90€.

http://playstationlifestyle.net/wp-c...on-685x514.jpg

Oh, and don't take this post as in that I don't like Skyrim, (I'm fucking hyped for it.) it's just that the collector's edition is a bit dull and for that price, they could add more stuff to it. At least some cool in-game content.

At least some cool in-game content.

I don't like the idea of powerful, unique ingame content for preorders. I think that stuff should be earned for being good at a game. It could ruin a game like Skyrim, too.
