I finished reading The Forever War by John Haldeman about a week ago. It was basically Vietnam in SPACE! with Time warps and aliens.

Now onto Forever Peace, which is pretty good so far.

MeechMunchie 01-08-2010 07:27 AM

I heartily endorse The Edge Chronicles. I loved them as a child, and I love them now. Spindlebugs are awesome, Chris Riddel illustrations FTW, and it's got a 'Nature versus Industry' vibe going on, like Oddworld or LoTR.

I've been reading Unseen Academicals too. It's good to see more of the UU. I don't think anyone does wizards like Terry Pratchett.

OANST 01-08-2010 07:47 AM

No one does wizards like Ursula Le Guin. Pratchett can suck a dick.

You'll never understand unless you give the series a try, they have some of the most detailed and most awesome illustrations you will find in any book ever. I heavily recommend introducing Abbey to them when she gets a bit older. They also have Banderbears.

Please read me the series over xbox live.

I like the hoverworms.

I think I'll by the books for tattoo ideas if nothing else.

I recently read 'A Catcher in the Rye' and hated it. Holden is a repetitive, egotistic cunt who's scared of growing up in a world where everyone is phony. Why would someone write a book about it? I thought it would get better towards the end but I was horribly wrong. However, if you want to read a book about a psychologically unstable 1950's wannabe troll, then this is the book for you.

tl;dr 'A Catcher in the Rye', it sucked.

EDIT: Oh yeah and it's a timeless classic and all that, I just hated it because I'm a douche like that :tard:.

MeechMunchie 01-09-2010 08:44 AM

And Bloodoaks, Glisters and Shrykes.

Wings of Fire 01-09-2010 08:47 AM

Don't forget the Slaughterers and the Ghostwaifs, my two favourite humanoid species.

MeechMunchie 01-09-2010 08:49 AM

Waterwaifs are better.

I'm getting an earful of filler and symbolism with an audio book of Moby Dick.

I was even lazier I listened to an audio summary of Moby Dick and it was great, NotePods or something? The narrator had a great voice, very brooding, it made me think they should update the book into another film.

Laser 01-10-2010 12:50 PM

What is the first Edge Chronicles book? I'd like to know because they sound fucking awesome.

Wings of Fire 01-10-2010 01:17 PM

You should read it Beyond the Deepwoods->Stormchaser->Midnight over Sanctaphrax->Curse of the Gloamglozer->Last of the Skypirates->Vox->Freegladers->The Winter Knights->Clash of the Sky Galleons->The Immortals.

slig# 5719 01-10-2010 01:58 PM

I finished "The colour of magic" just after christmas, i'm not sure if I prefer it over "Going Postal".

I'm now currently reading "Papillon" by Henri Charriere. It gets a little confusing when he's talking about something that dosen't happen for a while afterwards but it's good.

MA 01-10-2010 02:37 PM

so you're one that doesn't read them in order? nothing wrong with that, i would just prefer to read them in order, as slight references are sometimes made to previous books in the series that would otherwise not be understood.

Wings of Fire 01-10-2010 03:00 PM

If you're refering to me which I don't think you are then...

Edge Chronicles is a series of ten books composed of three trilogies and a final novel. In chronological order the series and the books are...

The Quint Trilogy: Curse of the Gloamglozer, The Winter Knights, Clash of the Sky Galleons.

The Twig Trilogy: Beyond the Deepwoods, Stormchaser, Midnight Over Sanctaphrax.

The Rook Trilogy: Last of the Sky-Pirates. Vox, Freegladers.

However, the first trilogy completed was the Twig trilogy, which I feel is the main story, the sequal being the Rook Trilogy and the prequel being the Quint Trilogy, also the books grow up as you go along. Beyond the Deepwoods is like The Hobbit compared to The Winter Knights where anyone can and will die.

I put Curse of the Gloamglozer before the Rook Trilogy because, firstly it was the first book they wrote and secondly I feel that it goes very well with and adds a lot of character and depth to Twig's adventures... but packs the most emotional punch after you're already completed Twig's trilogy.

Book order is srs bsns.

Sliggyhash: Going Postal is in my top five favourite Discworld books whilst Colour of Magic is my least favourite...his writing style definitly improved with age and experience.

MA 01-10-2010 03:41 PM

i see how it looked like that actually, seeing as i didn't look at the previous posts properly. i was asking Slighash about the Discworld series. The Colour Of Magic is the first one (as you know).

Hobo 01-10-2010 05:09 PM

The Atheists Guide to Christmas. BAM.

slig# 5719 01-11-2010 08:29 AM

I read the Discworld series as:
Mort -> Going Postal -> The Colour of Magic.

I plan on reading them in order after I finish reading Papillon I may need to re-read Mort since when I first read that I knew literally nothing of the Discworld series.

OANST 01-11-2010 08:33 AM

Mort is actually a good starting point as it's only the fourth book in. My advice is to read them according to characters. Guards Guards is a good place to start as it's one of the big turning points of the series, also that run ends with Night Watch which is one of the best books ever.

I'm reading Jacques Derrida's The Spectre of Marx, it's a fantastic and insightful read, if a little self indulgent.

MeechMunchie 01-11-2010 08:43 AM

I started with the Death trilogy. It's a good place to start, since it explains a lot of the nature of Discworld.

T-nex 01-11-2010 09:12 AM

OK... So I read this booik that I was going to give to my sister called "Why men love bitches"....

I know all your secrets now guys! .... The book was ok but I don't really need it. My sister does though. She needs to me less emotional.

Otherwise Im reading this awesome comic named "Bones" =D ... I started reading it as a kid at the library but they only had the first few volumes. Luckily someone I know had the whole collection in a huge book, so he lent it to me =) Yey.

Wings of Fire 01-11-2010 09:16 AM

And what did he get for lending you his "bones" books? Hmmm? Do tell.
